Board Members Elected, New By-Laws Approved
The Seaside Board of Directors
will have a new look this month
due to new members being elected
and the approval of new By-Laws
that change the structure of the
Board’s leadership.
At the Annual Meeting on Dec.
8, Susan Aaronson, Matthew Ash,
and Todd Hacker were elected to
their first full terms on the Board.
Mrs. Aaronson and Mr. Ash are
new to the Board. Mr. Hacker was
appointed by the Board last year to
serve the remainder of the term of
Immediate Past President Mike
Saltzman (z’l), who died Feb. 7.
The membership also approved
Seaside’s proposed updated By-
Laws; the old By-Laws had been
in effect since 2011. Under the
new By-Laws, the Board officer
positions will now be a single
President, Executive Vice-
President, Vice-President for
Programs, Treasurer, and
Secretary.
The Board has named Marsha
Davis President, Stanley
Silverblatt Executive Vice-
President, and Susan Aaronson
Vice-President for Programs.
Howie Hochman will continue as
Treasurer, and David Udoff will
remain as Secretary.
Anita Smulyan, who had been
Seaside’s Vice-President, will
leave the Board this month, as will
Carole Ash. Current Co-Presidents
Buddy Feldman and Alyssa Simon
will remain on the Board as at-
large members.
The new Board will be installed
on Jan. 18.
Groundbreaking Celebration Jan. 5
Join us on Sunday, Jan. 5, at
11:30 a.m. to celebrate a
milestone event—our
groundbreaking ceremony for the
SJC building expansion. We’ll
have a brief program inside, and
you can pose for photos with a
golden shovel and warm up with
hot chocolate and donuts.
Reaching this milestone is truly a
cause to rejoice. There will be no
solicitation of funds at this event.
The expansion project is being
paid for through these sources:
• An allocation from Seaside’s
reserves
• Gifts and pledges to the Capital
Campaign
• Construction and mortgage
financing through Fulton Bank
The challenge is
straightforward: the more that the
Capital Campaign raises, the less
the mortgage.
Are you one of our many new
members? Join us in supporting
this fundraising effort. The
expansion is to accommodate
YOU!
Have you already contributed?
Thank you!
Have you been waiting for the
right time to give? Now that
construction is beginning, the bills
will come due quickly. There
could not be a better time to join
the many donors who are
supporting our expansion.
Contact Marilyn Feldman at 301-
343-2706 or
feldmanz@verizon.net with any
questions about the campaign.

Co-President’s Message – Buddy Feldman
At the Seaside Annual meeting
in December, I said that the health
of any organization could be
measured by its ability to attract
new leaders. Seaside has
welcomed Susan Aaronson and
Matt Ash as new Board members
and Todd Hacker to a new full
term. These three members bring a
wealth of talent and experience to
benefit Seaside.
At the same time, I want to
thank outgoing Board members
Carole Ash and Anita Smulyan for
the many hours they have devoted
to Seaside’s success. Carole will
continue to help organize our
Adult Education programs.
Sam and Anita Smulyan have
been the faces of help and caring
for Seaside for the many years
they have been involved with our
community. They could always be
counted on to bring comfort and
warm feelings to those in need of
a helping hand. I know that they
will still be involved in providing
their good advice that has been so
beneficial to Seaside.
Co-President Alyssa Simon and
I want to wish you all a happy and
healthy 2020.
Seaside Mission to Cuba
Next Meeting:
Sunday, Jan. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
Parking at SJC Please park on the hard asphalt strip
closest to the building only if you
have difficulty walking on the gravel.
That way, the strip is available for
those who need the firmer surface to
walk safely.
Message from Reb Lisa Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was
an inspiring light for so many who
are still dedicated to the cause of
freedom and equality for all
people. January is the month in
which we honor his memory and
legacy.
On Saturday, Jan. 18, we will
commemorate the life and legacy
of Dr. King and raise up the
leaders of the Seaside Community
as the new Board is installed. We
hope you will join us for that
special service. Later in the day
we will gather with our
community to celebrate the life
and legacy of Dr. King at the
annual community banquet held
by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Celebration Organization (see
related article on page 5).
In the words of Dr. King,
“Human progress never rolls in on
the wheels of inevitability. It
comes through the tireless efforts
and the persistent work of
dedicated individuals who are
willing to be co-workers with G-d.
Without this hard work, time itself
becomes an ally of the insurgent
and primitive forces of irrational
emotionalism and social
stagnation. We are always
challenged to help time and to
realize that the time is always right
to do right.”
May these words be our guide to
doing right and bringing Dr.
King’s vision and light for justice
into our world.

on Sunday, Jan. 5, at Baywood
Greens. Cocktail hour will begin
at 6 p.m., followed by buffet
dinner and entertainment by Jazz
SeaDuction. We are looking
forward to a wonderful evening.
2020 Membership Dues SJC’s membership year is the
calendar year (Jan. 1 – Dec. 31),
which means that membership
dues for 2020 are now due.
Seaside’s dues are $250 per
member for those over the age of
24. An invoice for the dues is
included on page 14, and we will
also mail invoices to the
membership in late January. We
rely on our members to pay their
annual dues at this time of year
and thank you in advance for
making your dues payment this
month. You can pay by check or
online. Instructions for both
methods are included in the
invoice.
SJC offers a wide variety of
educational, worship, and social
activities to meet our members’
needs. We, in turn, depend on
your membership dues to operate.
We welcome all who want to join,
regardless of ability to pay. If you
cannot pay dues in full, if an offset
or payment plan is needed, or if
you have any questions, please
contact Howie Hochman, SJC
Treasurer, at hhochm@gmail.com.
Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an
SJC event but thought you couldn't
afford it? SJC policy is to work with
you if you have a financial hardship.
Please contact the treasurer to

Rehoboth Beach Jewish Film Festival
Save the dates for this year’s
film festival, March 11–15! The
Rehoboth Beach Film Society and
Seaside Jewish Community are
once again sponsoring the
Rehoboth Beach Jewish Film
Festival at the Cinema Arts
Theater in Lewes.
As in previous years, the
committee has selected a wide
range of films of Jewish interest.
Anyone wanting to sponsor or
host a film, please see the flyer on
page 13 and/or contact the
Rehoboth Beach Film Society at

Jewish Intellectual History On Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 4
p.m., the Adult Education
Committee continues its monthly
exploration of Jewish Intellectual
History at Seaside.
Samuel Lazzatto (1800–1865)
viewed the history of Western
civilization as the opposition
between Judaism and what he
called “Atticism.” By this he
meant the Greek love of
philosophy, arts, and sciences, the
development of intellect, and the
love of beauty.
Judaism, on the other hand, gave
the world religion and morality,
which spring from the heart, not
the mind. Marty Rosensweig will
facilitate a group discussion
following the viewing of the
DVD.
Member-Led Shabbat Morning Service
On Nov. 23, Seaside held an
additional monthly Saturday
service. Many attendees
participated in the service. We
thank Rabbi Richard White for his
leadership, the White family for
chanting Torah, and Jackie Land
for reading Haftarah. Thank you
also to all who provided food for
the Kiddush. It was full of prayer
and schmoozing.
By the time this issue goes to
press, the second Saturday service
for the month will have already
taken place on Dec. 28. Conducted
under the leadership of Eric and
Jackie Land, Buddy Feldman
served as Torah reader and Jackie
chanted Haftarah.
The Jan. 25 extra Saturday
service will be very special. Our
Sunday school will lead the
service, with the children and their
parents participating. Members of
the Sunday school staff and the
Youth Education Committee will
participate, with the parents
sponsoring the Kiddush. Please be
sure to come and support our
students, teachers, and parents as
they show what they can do. As
always, Torah study is at 9 a.m.,

Haftarah Session Jan. 13 Haftarah class resumes on Jan.
13 at 3 p.m. This session will
focus on Ki Tissa-I Kings 18:1-39.
Join us for one of the great
confrontations in the Tenach,
where Elijah the Prophet
represented monotheism, the G-d
of Israel, against Baal and his
priests on the slopes of Mt.
Carmel. We shall read the story
and consider the historical context
and the political and theological
implications against the
tumultuous history of the now-
vanished Northern Kingdom. Who
was Elijah? What was the
Northern Kingdom, and what
struggles existed between the
Baalists and the followers of G-d?
What was the background of his
mortal struggle with King Ahab?
How does this Haftarah relate to
the Parshah which features the
apostasy of the Golden Calf?
Toys for Tots
Thank you to everyone who
contributed to our annual
collection of Toys for Tots in
honor of Chanukah. This year our
collection was the first weekend in
December at Friday night services
and at the Annual Meeting.
A variety of books, games, and
toys were taken to the Toys for
Tots drop-off site by Daphne
Kaplan and Steve Scheffer, and a
second, smaller load was taken by
Fran Saltzman. Thanks, friends!

– Ira Wexler
Sy Brecher was one of Seaside’s original founders. An engineer by
training, he contributed a level-headed approach to questions of how
Seaside should develop through the years. Together with his wife,
Dorothy, they enhanced the social and intellectual climate in which
we moved.
Sy was part of an engineering team at Westinghouse that worked on
commercial uses of nuclear energy. When Westinghouse signed a
contract with the US Navy to use such power plants in our nuclear
submarines, Rear Admiral Hyman Rickover asked Sy to manage the
project. I have a particularly fond memory of a snapshot taken of him
at that time: young, purposeful, smiling as he strode forward with
confidence. He brought that know-how to a series of talks he gave at
Seaside on the history of nuclear physics and the role German Jews
played in its development and subsequent use in the United States. By
doing so Sy definitely enriched the content and scope of our Adult
Education program.
There is a side of him, though, which only I know, and I want to add
that to his record. In his later years Sy developed a severe and painful
peripheral neuropathy in his legs, making it difficult for him to walk.
He was game to let me use a new lab instrument to compare
conduction in his legs to mine — and I found no difference. So I
stopped going down that particular rabbit hole. The point of the story
is that scientists — like good poker players — must know when to
hold ’em and when to fold ’em.
Thank you, Sy.

Religious Leader Search Committee
The Search Committee met on
Dec. 15 and has been processing
the feedback received following
the Annual Membership Meeting.
As mentioned at the Annual
Meeting, the Committee
recommends bringing in an
interim Religious Leader for the
time gap between Reb Lisa’s
tenure ending and the hiring of our
next permanent Religious Leader.
The Committee will select and
recommend to the Board an
interim Religious Leader
candidate. Upon approval of the
candidate, the Board will schedule
a membership meeting, where
membership will make the final
decision. We anticipate that the
tenure of the interim Religious
Leader will be about one year,
beginning in July 2020.
The Search Committee has
prepared a tentative timeline for

Glove Collection Drive The Multi-Faith and Community
Service Committees are collecting
men’s and women’s gloves (new
only) as part of an educational and
community service project.
Offered by The Milton
Historical Society, this project
honors Bryan Stevenson, author of
Just Mercy and a graduate of Cape
Henlopen High School. Middle
and high school students from SJC
and other faith houses will be
participating by assembling
backpacks of supplies to be
donated to incarcerated men and
women about to be released. The
backpacks will be filled with
toiletries, bus tickets, hats, gloves,
scarves, and several other items.
SJC is hoping to collect 60 pairs
of men’s and women’s gloves by
Jan. 5, the day of Seaside’s
groundbreaking celebration. You
can bring your donations to that
event or drop them off in the box
in the entryway at SJC any time
before that date. If you would like
to make a donation but cannot
drop it off by Jan. 5, contact

Where the Angels Lived Book Event Follow-up
On Thursday, Jan. 16, at 3 p.m.,
the SJC Book Group will host a
meeting to discuss Margaret
McMullan’s book, Where the
Angels Lived, at Browseabout
Books on Rehoboth Ave. in
Rehoboth Beach. Peter Zoll will
lead the discussion; all Seaside
members are invited to attend.
This special Book Group
meeting is a follow-up event to the
recent presentation at the
Rehoboth Public Library where
Seaside, in conjunction with the
Library and Browseabout,
welcomed author Margaret
McMullan. A longtime writer of
fiction, Margaret wrote this
memoir of her family in Hungary
based on research she did during
her year at the University of Pécs
on a Fulbright grant teaching
English literature and creative
writing. She discovered her
family’s longtime roots in the Pécs
Jewish community, which had
been unknown to her. For all of us
who wish we knew more about
our ancestors, Margaret’s story
reveals what is possible to uncover
and how we can honor the
memories of our lost predecessors.
We have invited all who
attended the Library event to join
us for this special meeting. We
hope this will be the start of an
annual jointly hosted book event

SJC Annual Donations For Community Service
Each year, SJC, via the
Community Service Committee,
chooses mainly local non-profit
organizations to support through
monetary donations. We believe in
helping those that take care of the
people in our community. SJC
budgets for these donations, but
the amount is increased when you
select Community Service
Programs when donating to SJC.
Thanks to all who donated!
For 2019, SJC donated to the
following organizations, as
recommended by the committee:
Camp Rehoboth seeks to build a
strong sense of community and
create a positive environment
among all people, gay and
straight, in the Rehoboth area.
Community Resource Center,
located on Oyster House Rd. in
Rehoboth Beach, helps meet the
needs of Eastern Sussex County
residents facing crisis by
providing emergency assistance,
including food rescue, a baby
pantry, and job center.
Cape Henlopen Food Basket is
an emergency food service that
aids anyone needing help within
the boundaries of the Cape
Henlopen School District in
Sussex County, DE.
Delaware Hospice provides
hospice and healthcare services,
including end-of-life education
and support, in Southern
Delaware.
Epworth United Methodist
Church Food and Love Pantry
feeds the homeless and
international students through a
food pantry, weekly Sunday soup
kitchen, and Tuesday student
dinner program in the summer.
SJC participates with Epworth
United Methodist Church in the
soup kitchen and student dinner
program.
Islamic Society of Central
Delaware supports the needs of
Muslim families in Dover and
surrounding areas.
Jewish Family Service Sussex
Care Management is a group of
dedicated professionals who
connect individuals with local
resources, help navigate healthcare
and insurance concerns, and assist
with hospital discharge planning.
La Esperanza is the only
bicultural and bilingual non-profit
multiservice agency in Sussex
County that provides free
culturally and linguistically
appropriate programs and services
in the areas of family
empowerment, immigration, and
victim services for Hispanic
adults, children, and families.
La Red Health Center offers
patient-centered care to the diverse
members of our community.
People’s Place is dedicated to
helping people find their path to
growth and independence. It
provides programs and services in
Southern Delaware that are
focused on counseling, education,
prevention, intervention,
supportive services, and advocacy.
Planned Parenthood delivers
vital reproductive health care, sex
education, and information to
millions of women, men, and
young people worldwide.
Rehoboth Volunteer Fire
Company provides fire protection
and ambulance services to
Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach,
and Henlopen Acres.
RISE (Refugee Integration
Support Effort) Program of Jewish
Family Services (JFS) of
Delaware provides a team
approach to supporting refugees
who are newly arrived and
recently settled in Delaware. JFS
has a long and meaningful history
of helping refugees and
immigrants from around the world
make a successful transition to
self-sufficiency in the United
States.
The Way Home helps men who
are released from prison acclimate
back into the community. Services
include helping obtain housing,
job search assistance, and
transportation.
West Rehoboth Land Trust
assists residents of the West
Rehoboth neighborhood to
maintain their ability to live in an
area of rapid expansion and rising
property values.
