Section 3.2: Arc Length and Sector Area
Arc Length: The formula is common sense.
A ferris wheel, known as the Great Wheel was built in Vienna in 1897.The diameter of this wheel is 197 feet. Find the distance traveled by the rider in going from initial position Po to position P1.
θ = 270o
Example: If the second hand of a clock is 4 inches long and 25 seconds pass, how far does the tip of the second hand move?
Gears
Radius small gear = 2 mmRadius large gear = 3 mm
Small gear rotates 90o. Through what angle does the large gear rotate?
Area of a sectorA sector is a slice of a circle like a piece of pie.
To find the area of a sector you need to know what fraction of the circle the sector is. Use θ, the central angle in radians.
Example: A piece of pizza has a central angle of 36o. If the radius of the pizza is 6 inches, how many square inches of pizza are you getting?
Example: Find the area of the shaded sector.
Large Circle Diameter = 30 ftSmall Circle Diameter = 10 ft
