1. Project background
A state in Eastern India, Jharkhand was carved out of Southern part of Bihar on 15th November
2000. Jharkhand has several towns and innumerable villages with civic amenities. It has immense
mineral resources. Large deposits of coal and iron ore support concentrations of industries, in
centres like Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro and Ranchi. The state is gifted with rich biodiversity as
well as a rich cultural heritage and religious destinations.Jharkhand possess more than 40 % of
the mineral resource of India, but suffers widespread poverty, as 39.1% of the population is
below the poverty line. The mineral ranges from Iron Ore, Coal, Copper Ore, Mica, Bauxite,
Manganese, Limestone, China Clay, Fire Clay, Graphite, Kainite, Chromite, Asbestos, Thorium,
Sillimanite, Uranium, Gold, Silver and other minerals. Large deposits of these mineral in the state
supports concentration of industries at cities like Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Ramgarh and
Ranchi. These industrial cities are more developed than rest of the districts in North West and
North East regions. Urbanization ratio is 24.1% and the per capita annual income is US$726.8
being one of the lowest in the Country – about 30 percent less than the national average and is
more than only five states of the country; however, its growth rate is faster than most of them.
Growth in GDP and per capita income, both at current and constant price, has been higher than
India.
Involvement of locals, tribal and other stake holders for the promotion and development of tourist
sector will facilitate easy sustenance and maintenance of the state assets and infrastructure.Its
unmatched natural heritage can be used as an important source to facilitate tourism sector of the
state. Tourist circuits and destinations providing various amenities to support the tourists by
providing conveyance, lodging and other pre-requisites, are one of the major ways to facilitate
tourist industry in the state.
Tourism in Jharkhand:Jharkhand has emerged as one of the preferred tourist destination. The
growth in percentage is the highest in comparison to other state. The state has been ranked 17th
among 36 states and union territory for the total tourism inflow, according to the figures of
Ministry of Tourism.
Objective of the Project
The objectives of the study and developing Eco Tourism circuit in Jharkhand are elaborated
below:
To promote tourism in Jharkhand and invest in upgrading the tourism infrastructure scenario
in the state at the same time creating more employment opportunities.
To attract more number of domestic and international tourists by endorsing Jharkhand and
India as a Global Brand.
To identify unexplored tourist destinations, tap the potential through sustainable and
innovative concepts to promote tourism.
To promote responsible tourism and minimizing impact on environment by the tourists and simultaneously providing a wholesome experience through providing world class infrastructure.
To strengthen the awareness of the subject Eco Tourism in provider groups and end-users mind through capacity building program.

1.1 Circuit Description:
Circuit starts from Dalma Wild Life Sanctuary in Saraikela-Kharsawan District as Entry /Exit point
and major destinations it connects to are Chandil Dam in Saraikela-Kharsawan District, Getalsud
Dam in Ranchi District, Betla National Park in Palamau District, Mirchaiya Fall and Netarhat in
Latehar District.

Destination 1: Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary
The site is spread over 193 sq. km of forests of East Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharsawan
districts and known as paradise for Elephants. Hanuman Temple and Shiva Temple at Dalma Hill
top are prominent tourist attractions.

Destination 2: Chandil Dam:
Standing on the Subarnarekha River, Chandil Dam is a place of scenic beauty. It is surroundedby
green mountains, hills, streams & rivers. Dam is 220 meter in height and the height of its water
level is 190 meter. Chandil is located in Seraikela – Kharsawan district and is a major destination
as it hosts railway junction on Tatanagar – Asansol – Kharagpur line and various institutional/
administrative offices. Chandil has a dam on River Subarnarekha, one of the most visited places in
Jharkhand. Museum located at the Dam houses 2000 years old stone inscriptions.

Destination 3: Getalsud Dam
Located on the Subarnarekha River, Getalsud is a multi-purpose reservoir created in 1971 with a
catchment area of 717 sq.km. This is a main source of water for the capital city. The dam is
surrounded by scenic Sal forest and is a popular picnic spot for the residents of Ranchi and
Ramgarh.

Destination 4: Betla National Park:
Betla National Park – a part of Palamu Tiger Reserve is rich in wildlife reserve and the species
have been included in the IUCN (International union for Conservation of nature and neutral
resources) Red Data book & appendices of CITES (Convention on International trade in
Endangered species of flora and fauna). Betla is one of the most important tourist places of
Jharkhand having luxuriant Sal and miscellaneous trees and bamboo forests. 226 sq. km. of Betla
forest has been declared as Betla National Park and 753 sq. km. of forest has been declared as
Palamu Wildlife Sanctuary. The forest starts from Kechki and extends up to Netarhat. The forest
has 970 species of identified plants, 174 species of birds, 39 species of Mammals, 180 species
of Medicinal plants, besides reptiles and other species.
Betla has network of motorable roads passing through the park that provides visitors an
experience of the wild life from closer quarters. Tourists can enjoy elephant ride inside the park.

There are guest houses of forest and tourism department besides private lodges for
accommodation.
Betla is situated at 25 km. away from Daltonganj, 70 km. from Latehar and 170 km. from Ranchi.
It is well connected by Rail and Road. The nearest airport is Ranchi which is about 180 km. From
Daltonganj and 195 km. from Betla& Patna airport is about 250 kms. From Betla, the tourist
headquarters of the Palamu Tiger Reserve. Daltonganj and Barwahdih is an important Railway
station where all trains have stoppage.

Destination 5: Mirchaya Falls
Mirchaiya fall is formed by the tributary of the North Koel River, which is born out of Koel River. It
is located within Betla national park which also habitats rare animals like four horned antelopes,
mouse deer, pangolin and tigers. The waterfall is located amidst a sanctuary and it is the presence
of wildlife around which gives a life-like touch to this place.
Mirchaiya falls is located in Garu block of Latehar district of Jharkhand state. It is located at a
distance of 3 km from Garu block.

Destination 6: Netarhat
Netarhat, a hill station is famous for its glorious sunrise and sunset during the summer months. It is
situated at an altitude of 3671 ft. It is located 156 km west of Ranchi town. Netarhat is covered
with thick forests and is a health holiday resort. It is a plateau covered with thick forests where

tourists visit to enjoy the breath taking sunrise and sunset. It has several places of tourist interests
including.
