After significant military defeats governors
hired mercenaries to replace the men in theirarmies
Rome could not afford to pay for the armies
and the armies would eventually turn to
attack Rome itself

Rome made a new name for itself, TheByzantine Empire.
Founded by Emperor Constantine.
Capital was located in Constantinople.
Constantinople became the center of alltrade in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.

Emperor Justinian ruled from 527-565. Conquered much of the land surrounding the
Mediterranean.

Constantinople was the wealthiest city in the worldtime.
The Byzantines made their money mostly from thetrade, but also luxury items.

The Byzantine Empire ruled for over 1,100 years. Empire became divided over religion and involvem
the crusades.
Constantinople fell in May of 1453 to the Ottoman
The Byzantines stayed around but were no longer aempire, and held very little power and land.
