User Needs

• Time and money consumption for extracting a rafter should be low.

• Rafters should be fairly straight through out.

• Should be easy to use.

• Maintenances of the machine should be low.

Engineer’s Perspective

• DimensionsThe cross section 3.5x2 - 5x2 inches

Length of a rafter 3-10 cubits

• Number of finished rafters per hour is 20cubits in length.( Minimum )

Remove it from the whole trunk

• Using scraping rollers

Single roller or Multiple roller arrangement

• Continuous scrapingIn these 2 methods either

Roller is stationary & trunk is moving on a conveyor belt

or

Trunk is stationary & tool is moving.

• Reciprocating cutting tool

Tool is stationary & the trunk is moving

Remove it from the whole trunk

• Drilling

• Broaching

These are having certain limitations The trunk should be short in length. Trunk should be fairly straight. Also high amount of power is required.

Remove it from each rafter after parting the trunk

• Continuous scraping

• Scraping roller arrangement

• Planing

Using an automated planer

Parting out the rafters

• One rafter at a timeUsing a power operated circular saw

Using a reciprocating power operated sawUsing a chain sawBy cutting grooves using drilling or broaching

• Multiple rafters at the same timeUsing multiple power operated circular saws

Mounting

Here we have to consider about tool mounting & how tomount the coconut trunk. But tool mounting is different fordifferent kind of processes.

• mount the tools (device) on the trunk as it slide by our force

• Mount the device on a sliding support as it is easy to move the device forward.

• Coconut trunk can be mounted as in manual rafter making process.

Stability

• When we mount the device on the trunk as it slide by our force, then the whole stability has to be handled by the operator.

• Damping and shockabsober arrangement should be employed. ( due to vibrations)

Safety

• Use a safety guard against waste which is removed in the process.

These waste can be used as a bio fuel.
