*Subitizing is the ability to quickly identify the number of items in a small set without counting.

*The spatial arrangement of sets influences how difficult they are to subitize. *Children usually find rectangular

arrangements easiest, followed by linear, circular, and scrambled arrangements (Beck-with and Restle 1966; Wang, Resnick, and Boozer 1971). *This progression holds true for students

from the primary grades to college.
