3% Mortgage Rates? The downturn in the economy has certainly posed problems on our lives. But, as the saying goes, “there is a silver lining in every cloud”. One of the benefits of a sluggish economy is its effect on interest rates. Generally, a slower economy means a little to no concern of infla-tion. And if there is no concern of inflation in a slow market, mortgage interest rates will drop. Interest rates have
dropped to their lowest point in decades. Pro-grams exist with rates in the low 3% range. These programs are of-ten referred to as hybrid mortgages, and offer the security of a fixed rate with the flexibility of an adjustable. One such program is the 7/1 ARM. This program has a fixed rate for the first 7 years, and then will convert to a one-year adjust-able thereafter. The
term of the mortgage is 30 years, and can be prepaid at any time without penalty. This program can be perfect for the first time home buyer, or even the so-phisticated investor. Interest rates are more
than 1%lower than a traditional 30 year fixed rate term. This is a savings of over $1,000 annually. There are a number of mortgage programs available that can save a home buyer or home
owner thousands of dollars. Too many bor-
rowers simply apply for a 30 year fixed rate
mortgage, when Continued on Page 5

soil makes life. To the farmer, soil is where crops grow. To the en-gineer, soil is a foun-dation upon which to build. To the ecologist, soil support commu-nities of living things. To the archaeologist, soil holds clues to past cultures. To the city
dweller, soil nurtures grass and gardens. To the soil scientist, soil is all of these things. Soil has been called “the skin of the earth” because it is the thin outermost layer of the earth’s crust. Like our own skin, we can’t live without soil. 2014 marks the 59th year of the NA-CD’s National Soil & Water Stewardship

Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing.
Wheat is thought to be the most widely grown plant in the world. It has been cultivated for more than 7,000 years in every continent expect Antarc-tica.
Mother Nature hid her greatest secrets in one tiny capsule: the seed. We have found a way ofharnessing the

trient-dense ovules are the foundation of our products. And, whileall seeds are not cre-ated equal, we are unwavering when it comes to sourcing only the mostnutrient-dense, sci-entifically researched and healthful seeds on the planet—all of which are pureand non-GMO. THE RESULT: Pow-erful antioxidants and essential fatty acids that assist the bodyand mind maintain balance while help-
ing to combat today’s most pressing healthissues. We’re not the first to discover the bene-fits of seed nutrition. In fact, ancient civi-lizations uncovered their secret long ago and certain seeds were even revered by some cultures. The pharohs in Egypt insisted that they even take these seeds into the af-ter life. Many others spoke of the same seed for thousands of years: black cumin, also called black seed or
Nigella sativa in Latin. These ancient civ-ilizations fell in love with black cumin and used it foralmost any ailment that you can think of. Although they knew that itworked, they didn’t know why….but we do. RAIN INTERNA-TIONAL is the first to offer natural seed-based supplements that provides a host ofbenefits for overall health and wellness. Our contemporary science shows that the healing properties of
black cumin are due to various compounds found within the pro-tective shell of the seed, such as lipids, enzymes, and anti-oxidants, plus a very powerful compound called thymoquinone (or TQ, for short). So, in a nut shell—no pun intended—that is our story. We use seeds as the founda-
tion of our products. Try them and find out for yourself what our seed-based formula-tions can really do for your health. See our ad on the back page of this edi-tion. To order or for a career opportunity: www.myrainlife.com/nick or call 484-547-4805.

Throughout history, basil has been thought to incite ro-mantic passions; in Italy, it symbolizes love.
The quality and ap-pearance of a quilt is a combination of many factors, including the design, craftsmanship, and type of fabric. But if you think about it, it is the color scheme of the quilt that can really make or break a quilt. That is, bright colors can make even the dullest design interesting and will draw the eye towards it instead of any small mistakes you may have made. As for the type of fabric…as long as you purchase from The Quilted Crow, you won’t have to worry about the quality of the fabric.
But since color is so important in a quilt, we’d like to help you out a little. It is easy to get lost in a shop full of so many color options and combinations that it can become over-whelming. So, when you’re first starting a
Color Crazy
quilt and trying to de-cide what colors you would like the quilt to be, you may want to visit colourlovers.com, which is a color palette generator. You can ex-periment by making your own color palette or choose from over a million color palettes already used. This will give you a better idea of what fabrics to look for in the shop and what colors will work well with each other.
Happy coloring!
The Quilted Crow is located at 179 In-terchange Road, Le-highton, PA 18235. For more information, call

You can tell from the statue of a mounted horseman how the rider died. If all four of the horse’s feet are on the ground, he died of natural causes. One foot raised means he died from wounds suffered in battle. Two legs raised means he died in action.

no Job too big or sMALL (NU) - Remember in 1999 Disney Chan-nel original movie “Smart House,” where current “Sons of An-archy” queen Katey Sagal plays the com-puterized personality of a highly technical smart home? Sure, Sagal’s cyborg-esque character, Pat, goes overboard and winds up trying to parent the motherless house-hold - but winning a technologically ad-vanced house that eases chores and offers topnotch security was nothing short of out-of-this-world awe-some. Fast-forward 14 years, and profession-al house planner and HGTV design expert Jack Thomasson de-signed the first-ever HGTV Smart Home in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Complete with the latest technology, ener-gy-saving features and green living, anyone can enter to win the house at hgtv.com/smarthome during the sweepstakes period of April 11 through May 31. But, in case you ar-en’t the lucky winner, Thomasson shares his top five tips to go “smart” with your home technology. 1. Find a system that speaks your language. Technology can be intimidating, and if it can’t be explained within your comfort zone, don’t do it. It’s so frustrating to in-vest in something that doesn’t offer a return. When you invest in technology for your home, take care to find the right system. 2. Maximize secu-rity options. This can make your life easier and more secure and bring you peace of mind. For example, a front door that you can lock and unlock from a smart phone can free you of giving precious house keys away that

can be duplicated at any hardware store. Or, discreet security cameras can alert you when someone is ap-proaching your home. 3. Enjoy the luxu-ry of remote function. That same technology that brings you se-
curity can bring you luxury. When you can control your home re-motely, you eliminate everyday worries. If you become distracted while filling the bath-tub, you’re covered - a
Smart Home will shut it off automatically at a pre-designated fill level. 4. Embrace “smart” technology. The right tech choices - from energy efficiency to
better use of your time - will make you more effective. There is no need to walk from room to room turning off lights, because you can adjust lights with an app that controls
them inside and out-side the home. Or con-trol the temperature in your home with a smart thermostat that
you can adjust from anywhere. 5. Have fun. Tech-nology can and shouldContinued on Page 11

be fun. As you incor-porate technology into your home and connect appliances and devices electron-ically, you’ll marvel at the newfound free-
doms you didn’t even realize you’d lost and the functionality you didn’t know you were missing. Wire-less advancements have made technology more available, more affordable and more user-friendly than ever.
Spring Cleaning & Spring Pest Proofing
Go Hand in Hand (NU) - As the rit-ual of spring clean-
ing nears with every slightly warmer and
longer day, many homeowners will look to home organiza-tional trends to kick start their list of proj-ects. No matter which trends homeowners choose to take charge of their houses, it’s important to ensure that any home care initiatives include pest prevention practices. Spring is a particular crucial time to take
proactive measures to pest-proof as the sea-son’s warmer weather serves as a wake-up call to a myriad of home-invading pests. Some of the most common pests emerg-ing in the spring are termites, ants (espe-cially odorous house ants, pavement ants and carpenter ants), springtails, cockroach-es and spiders. Ac-
cording to Missy Hen-riksen of the National Pest Management As-sociation (NPMA), what homeowners can expect to see this season depends large-ly on where they live and local weather con-ditions. “People who experienced milder winters are likely to see an early arrival
of spring pests, since last year was one of the warmest winters on record and pests across the country
emerged weeks, and even months, ear-ly,” said Henriksen. “Those who experiContinued on Page 12

Spring Cleaning & Spring Pest Proofing
Go Hand in HandContinued From
Page 11enced wet winters may have lingering moisture that may be creating pest-friendly environment within their homes.” In addition to min-imizing clutter and organizing pantry shelves this spring, the NPMA suggests these important steps to prevent pests from feeling welcome in your home.
Remove shelter: • Maintain a one-inch gap between soil and wood portions of a building. • Keep mulch at leasts 15 inches from your home’s founda-tion. • Seal cracks along the bottom of the structure. • Keep tree branch-es and plants trimmed back from the house. • Screen windows and doors.
Remove food: • Keep trash con-tainers clean and sealed. • Don’t allow dirty dishes to accumulate in the sink. • Wipe counters and vacuum floors regularly. • Remove remain-ing food after your pet is done eating.
Remove water: • Check under sinks
for puddles, and fix any leaks or drips. • Use a dehumidifi-er for damp basements and crawl spaces. For other pest-proof-ing ideas to protect your home and prop-erty, visit www.pest-world.org.
(NAPSA)-Hot un-der the collar? Here are six simple steps to help reduce your elec-tric bills and keep your home cool during the summer. 1. Lights off. Light-bulbs give off heat when lit. Don’t leave them on when you’re out. 2. Shut the door. Even a small crack can make a big difference
in comfort. 3. Draw your drapes. Closing lined drapes helps shield the sun and keep the air-conditioning in. 4. Check your weat her-proof ing . Caulking window sills and weather stripping around doors can seal the leaks and help your home remain cool. 5. Close the garage
Tips On Keeping Your Cool
door. This can keep a massive amount of heat out of your home. 6. Get your air-con-ditioning unit ser-viced. Regular check-ups help your unit operate efficiently, and a home warranty from American Home Shield will help pro-tect your budget when a covered part or com-ponent breaks down.

The term “whole 9 yards” came from WWII fighter pi-lots in the South Pacific. When arming their airplanes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammo belts measured exactly 27 feet. If the pilots fired all their ammo at a target, it got the “whole 9 yards.”
National Associa-tion of Conservation Districts (NACD) and the Monroe County Conservation District will observe National Soil & Water Steward-ship Week from Sun-day, April 27 through Sunday, May 4, 2014 with this year’s theme of “DIG DEEPER: Mysteries in the Soil” Soil is an amazing substance. A complex mix of minerals, air, and water; soil also teems with countless micro-organisms and the decaying remains
of once-living things. Soil is made of life and soil makes life. To the farmer, soil is where crops grow. To the en-gineer, soil is a foun-dation upon which to build. To the ecologist, soil support commu-nities of living things. To the archaeologist, soil holds clues to past cultures. To the city dweller, soil nurtures grass and gardens. To the soil scientist, soil is all of these things. Soil has been called “the skin of the earth” because it is the thin

outermost layer of the earth’s crust. Like our own skin, we can’t live without soil. 2014 marks the 59th year of the NA-CD’s National Soil & Water Stewardship Week. Help us cele-brate “DIG DEEPER: Mysteries in the Soil”
the week of April 27 through May 4. For more informa-tion about Soil and Water Stewardship Week, please visit NA-CD’s website at www.nacdnet.org or call the Monroe County Con-servation District at 570-629-3060

“Mom didn’t want to go to personal Care ... it was tough! Mom didn’t even want to think about Personal Care. She kept insisting that she could manage. i was tempted to remind her that it was me that took her shopping and to the hairdresser and the doctors appointments and the pharmacy but that really wasn’t the crux of the matter at all. After all she’s done for me, i was happy to help out, to do what i could to help her stay in her home. it was the not knowing that kept me up at night. Not knowing whether she was eating regularly, if she had taken her medication or if she’d fallen or left the stove on. i worried constantly and so did my brother so we started checking in on her more often. Eventu-ally we arranged for home care for a couple of hours every day but no matter what measures we took we couldn’t shake the feeling that she was in a rut and had lost that spark. She seemed to lack direction, sleeping odd hours and staring at the tv seemingly unaware of what she was watching half the time. After a family meeting and no small amount of consternation we agreed to suggest to her that she begin to think about a Personal Care Residence. As you might imagine she wasn’t crazy about the idea. the only concession she would make was that she would at least visit a couple of facilities for ‘future reference.’ the visit to Walden iii was a revelation to her. i can only imagine what she expected to find but what she
did see, people her age engaged in all sorts of activities or talking animatedly at meals, clearly made an impression on her and although she wasn’t ready to ‘sign on’ then and there, the seed had been planted and within a month she agreed to at least give it a try. it’s been positive for everyone involved! With-in a couple of weeks, Mom’s focus shifted from all that she was ‘giving up’ to all that she’s get-ting. the staff and the residents both seemed to understand what a vulnerable time it can be for newcomers and everyone gave her a very warm reception. the residents are a very nice group of people and their desire to want to continue to do as much as they can for themselves was contagious and Mom seemed to get a boost from the start. i think the key to the whole thing is that they’re engaged in life and now thankfully so is Mom. She still won’t say to us that she thinks the move was necessary or that she’s happy to be there but when my brother or i have her home for dinner or a family event at some point during the visit she will invariably inform us that she “should probably be getting home!”

Lehigh Township Rails to Trails is ex-cited to announce the opening of a picnic area at Lock 25 along the Walnutport Canal Towpath. For the past year, with the support of the Walnutport Ca-nal Association and the Delaware and Lehigh National Her-
Grand Opening of Lock 25 Picnic Area
itage Corridor orga-nization, LTRT has been clearing brush, planting perennials, designing signs and preparing an area for picnic tables near the lock. At one time a locktender’s house stood on the site, as did a mule barn. To-day the remains of
the house can still be seen. The foundation of the mule barn is also present and has been turned into the area for the picnic ta-bles. LTRT chose this area to develop as it is within Lehigh Town-ship. The Grand Opening is scheduled for Sat., May 31st with a rain date of Sun., June 1st. It will run from 11 AM until 3 PM. During
this time you can en-joy hot dogs and other food items. Members of Lehigh Township Rails to Trails and the Walnutport Canal As-sociation will be on hand to tell you about the people who had lived and worked at the lock.
Access to the Lock 25 picnic area is by foot or by bicycle. Mo-torized vehicles are not permitted. The lock lies south along the towpath, about 1.2 miles from the WCA pavilion. Parking is available behind the pavilion.
For more informa-tion about the Grand Opening or for direc-
tions to the parking area, please call 610 767-0676.

The Kettle Creek Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a healthy sal-amander population with several different species present. On Saturday, April 26, 2014, join Environ-mental Education Co-ordinator Roger Spotts for this 90 - minute family program begin-ning at 10 a.m. We’ll be exploring different areas of Kettle Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, looking under rocks and logs as well as in the ponds on the prop-erty for salamanders. After we discover them we will return all of the salamanders back to their natural habitat. We will also discuss how to safe-ly handle these small and slimy creatures for the benefit of both the salamanders and the participants. The program will be most-ly outside and we may encounter some mud-dy conditions during our search. Cost: $5/non-members, $3/children under 12. EE Center members free. Pre-registration is sug-gested. To pre-register for the program, please call the Center at (570) 629-3061, Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and most Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information on other programs we offer vis-it our website at www.mcconservation.org Directions to the E.E. Center: From Stroudsburg (or Exit 302 from I-80 West or 302B from I-80 East) go N. on Rte. 611 and travel ½ mile to the 2nd traffic light in Bartonsville, and turn left onto Rimrock Dr. Follow Rimrock Dr. for 0.4 mile, bear right onto N. Easton-Bel-mont Pike, go 0.2 mile, and then bear right onto Running Valley Road. The E.E. Center is 0.7 mile on left.

(NAPS) - It’s a new day for diesel engines. That’s the word from experts who say im-provements in diesel technology and fuel composition have
DieselEngines & Premium Synthetic
Oils
made diesel vehicles more appealing to a broader group of con-sumers. Because of these im-provements, people who choose diesel ve-hicles report better gas mileage and increased torque. Plus, diesel ve-hicles typically hold their value in the re-sale market better than those with gaso-line-powered engines. While in the past many thought that you could not use a synthetic oil in a diesel engine, that is not the case. Today’s diesel vehicles can benefit from the same im-provements in perfor-mance and protection that a premium syn-thetic motor oil, such as Royal Purple, offers gas-powered vehicles.
Common Questions To help, here are some answers to com-mon questions about using a synthetic oil in a diesel vehicle. • Is it possible to run synthetic for one
oil change and then switch back to mineral oil? Yes. Most synthet-ic oils including Royal Purple are compatible with other mineral and synthetic oils. You will want to check the label on the manufac-turer’s bottle for con-firmation. • What is the differ-ence between 5W-40 and 15W-40 for diesel engines? Assuming they are American Pe-troleum Institute (API) licensed (CI-4, CJ-4, etc.), both are effective SAE 40 weight oils.
As the oil cools from engine operating tem-perature, the 5W-40 will thicken less than the 15W-40. The small-er the first number of the viscosity, the better the fluid flows when cold. Depending on the age of your engine, older diesel engines may see a slight in-crease in oil consump-tion with lighter oil. • Do you need to adjust the viscosi-ty of your oil based on where you live? Sometimes. The way you use your vehi-cle is also a factor. In general, many auto manufacturers rec-ommend an “all tem-perature” viscosity.
Your owner’s manual will indicate which “all temperature” oil is recommended for your vehicle and loca-tion. • What about pre-mium oil filters? It’s a good idea to use a pre-mium oil filter in tan-dem which a synthetic oil. Oil filters prevent contaminants from circulting through the system, causing damage. Premium oil filters offer superior filtration media and internal and structural components made of high quality material. If you’re consider-ing purchasing a die-sel vehicle, don’t for-get that maintaining the vehicle is key.

purpleconsumer.com.
(NAPSA)-The Rub-ber Manufacturers As-sociation (RMA), the national trade organi-zation for tire manu-facturers, warns that dangerous, worn-out
tires that have been removed from ser-vice can be resold as “used,” with virtually no restrictions. Learn more at www.rma.org.
