HAPPY NEW YEAR

Let us begin anew, with a new vigor for the world and its people. Let us focus on the things that we can change in ourselves to be better follows of Christ. Let us help each other move, let us serve more, let us pray more, let us council more, and let us love each other more. Let us all focus on the virtues that God smiles upon. I am grateful for each one of you and what you do each day. May God continue to bless each one of you and your families.

THE DESOTO KNIGHT COUNCIL 7120

Father Gregory Bezy Assembly 2195

Volume 19, Issue 1

January 2019

Fellow Knights, December was a big month for membership! We had 5 new members go through our 1st degree ceremony on December 3: Nathan Martinez, Thomas Reyes, Jr., Paul Reyes, Troy Reyes, and Ricardo Olguin. In addition, Thomas Reyes, Jr., Paul Reyes, and Troy Reyes participated in the 2nd and 3rd ceremonies on December 8. This means we are about halfway to meeting our membership goal that we need to achieve Star Council. Thank you, gentlemen, for becoming Knights of Columbus and thank you Knights who helped encourage these men to join our Order. We look forward to seeing the good you will bring to our Council, and I look forward to assisting you in any way to assure that you get the most out of being a Knight. I hope everyone and their families had a blessed Christmas and are looking forward to the rest of Advent season! New Year is a time for renewing and starting over, whether that be through a resolution or making some changes for the next year that will help you grow in life. As we celebrate New Year, let us be reminded of the change the world underwent when Mary gave birth to Jesus. His birth brought on a newness of life and a path to redemption not only for those living during that time, but also for us today. We should all strive to incorporate this in our lives more and more each day. May we always celebrate the greatest gift ever given: HOPE. From my family to yours, have a Happy New Year and a blessed remainder of the Christmas season! Vivat Jesus! DJ Godwin Membership Chairman

For it is in Giving that we Receive

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I am writing these paragraphs the day after Christmas and hoping you and your families have had a joy filled Christmas. The gift of salvation is given to us at Christmas with the birth of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Have any of us taken down the tree or put away the decorations yet? Have all the gifts been opened and now the gift cards need to be spent or the sweaters exchanged? The live Christmas tree may not hold its needles until January 13th when we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, but consider keeping the Nativity figures displayed prominently at your during the coming week or changing the candles in your Advent Wreath to white and lighting the candles during each family meal. We as Catholics celebrate Christmas not only on December for 25th, but for almost 3 weeks this year. Wow! How lucky we are to extend the joy of the season and celebrate Holy Family Sunday and Epiphany during the next two weekend liturgies. Council 7120 concludes each Council meeting with the Prayer of St. Francis; please reflect on this prayer as you continue the Christmas Season over the coming weeks. During the month of December, we had many opportunities to share ourselves, our lives, our time, our talents with our church, community, family, fraternal families, brothers, strangers alike. For New Year, we are in the custom of making a new year’s resolution: some of us to exercise more, others to lose a few pounds by dieting (for maybe a week), others to start the new year by jotting down a monthly budget to plan out where and on what we spend our hard-earned dollars. Consider making a faith based new year’s resolution for yourself and your family. This time of year is awesome for practicing and experiencing our virtues of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. Particularly the gift of Charity: “For it is in giving that we receive, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life” (Prayer of St. Francis). May the joy of Christ’s coming remain in your hearts and may your family be blessed during this time. Vivat Jesus, Ted Lander Faithful Navigator

On Saturday, January 26th, the Assembly at Queen of Peace in Olive Branch will host a 4th Degree Exemplification. If you are currently a 3rd Degree member, this is the best opportunity to learn more about our 4th Degree principle, Patriotism, upon which our order was founded, and become a “Sir Knight” in our order. Being a 4th Degree member is more than just a title of “Sir Knight”, it is a true honor that you will have for a lifetime. As 4th Degree Members we promote the ideals of Catholicism and Patriotism; we serve as Honor Guards during funerals of brothers and their family members, at special Masses presided by the Bishop, at Holy Thursday Adoration, and we serve at Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day services and set up flag displays at all of our parishes during patriotic holidays. Please take advantage and encourage your brothers to participate as well. If you have any questions or need an application, please contact me or any of our Assembly officers. May the New Year bring you and your loved ones many blessings. Vivat Jesus, Ted Lander Faithful Navigator
