Session 1The Cardiovascular System

2

Session Aims/Objectives

By the end of the session you should

be able to:

• Identify the 3 parts of the CV system

• Label a heart diagram• Complete a word search relating

to the C.V system

3

The Cardiovascular System

• The CV System is made up of 3 components

• Here’s a clue

4

1. The Heart

5

2. The blood Vessels

6

3. Blood

8

Task 1

• Attempt to name as many parts of the heart as you can.

11

Heart Facts

• Put your hand on your heart.

• Did you place your hand on the left side of your chest?

• Many people do, but the heart is actually located almost in the centre of the chest, between the lungs.

• It's tipped slightly so that a part of it sticks out and taps against the left side of the chest, which is what makes it seem as though it is located there.

12

Heart facts

• Your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times.

• The aorta, the largest artery in the body, is almost the diameter of a garden hose.

• Capillaries, on the other hand, are so small that it takes ten of them to equal the thickness of a human hair.

13

Heart Facts

• Hold out your hand and make a fist. If you're a child, your heart is about the same size as your fist, and if you're an adult, it's about the same size as two fists.

• Your body has about 5.6 litres of blood. This 5.6 litres of blood circulates through the body three times every minute.

• In one day, the blood travels a total of 19,000 km (12,000 miles)

• The heart pumps about 1 million barrels of blood during an average lifetime--that's enough to fill more than 3 super tankers.

14

Task 2 -Complete the word search using your labelled diagram of the heart

15

Conclusion• You have identified the 3 parts of the

CV system, what are they?...........

• You have Labelled a diagram of the heart, name 10 parts……………………………..

• Finally what type of blood vessels are there in the body, what are there purpose?...................................

Session 2The Cardiovascular System – Pathway of blood through the heart

17

Session Objectives

• Session Aim • Increase knowledge of Cardiovascular

system to achieve target grade in the assignment

• Session Objectives • Identify different parts of the heart• Describe how blood flows through the

heart

18

Heart - Key Points

• 2 Atria top chambers known as the collecting chambers

• 2 ventricles bottom chambers known as the pumping chambers

• Right side of the heart collects and pumps de-oxygenated blood

• Left side of the heart collects and pumps oxygenated blood

21

Pathway of blood through the heart

• STEP 1 - Blood returns to your heart from your body and lungs.

• Oxygen-poor blood from your body flows into your right atrium.

• At the same time, oxygen-rich blood from your lungs

flows into your left atrium.

22

Pathway of blood through the heart • STEP 2 - Blood flows from the upper to the lower

chambers.

• Blood flows from your right atrium into your right ventricle.

• At the same time, blood flows from your left atrium into your left ventricle.

23

Pathway of blood through the heart

• STEP 3 - Blood is pumped back out to your lungs and body.

• Your right ventricle pumps blood out of your heart to your lungs, where the blood's oxygen supply is replenished.

• At the same time, your left ventricle pumps blood — once again full of oxygen — out of your heart to your body.

24

The heart is divided into 2 parts. Each part is a pump, so the heart is a double pump.

The right side right sidepumps

deoxygenated blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen.

The left side left sidepumps oxygenatedblood to the rest ofthe body for use.

Missing word activity

• Look at the paragraphs below. They describe the flow of blood through the heart. Some words are missing.

• Try to get all ten with as few mistakes as possible.

• Deoxygenated blood enters the………. through the………. The atrium contracts and pushes this blood into the………… . The…………. makes sure that the blood flows the correct way.

• When the right ventricle contracts, it forces blood through the…………. and along the pulmonary arteries to the………...

• In the lungs the blood becomes oxygenated. It returns to the heart in the…………. . These enter the…………… . When this contracts it pushes blood into the………….. . This has a thick wall because when it contracts it generates high pressure to force the blood through the…………..to the head and body.

26

Task - Pathway of blood through the heart

Draw a flow diagram showing the pathway of the blood on the left and right sides of the heart.

Add arrows to your heart diagram indicating the blood flow through the heart.

27

28

• NOW – With your cards sit yourself in order of blood flow through the cardiovascular system

• Starting with the lungs…….as a helper your next one will be

29

Summary

• You have continued to identify different parts of the heart, what are they?...................................................

• Describe how blood flows through the heart, starting with deoxygenated blood from the rest of the body………………………………………..

• Next session – Blood Vessels
