Literacy Development

Activities Promote:

• Phonemic Awareness• Phonics• Fluency• Vocabulary• Comprehension• Writing Skills• Fun!

Phonemic Awareness: Understanding that speech is made up of a series of individual sounds.

Syllable Clap

Reading-

Syllable recognition is the foundation of Phonemic Awareness. Having your child count the syllables in a word by clapping allows them to separate the words into smaller sections. Give them a hand!

Rhyme Time

Phonics: The connection between sounds and letter symbols. This connection allows the reader to relate how the sound/symbol combination creates words.

Reading-

Sorting words that rhyme helps your child to see how sounds and letters combine to make words. You will be surprised at the sentences they can come up with!

Reading Race

Fluency: The ability to read with speed, accuracy, and expression.

Reading-

Reading together with speed, accuracy and expression not only helps with fluency, it can be really funny too!

Magazine Scavenger Hunt

Vocabulary: Knowing what a word is and its definition.

Reading-

Vocabulary is key to fluency and comprehension. Matching pictures to words makes an important connection. Now you can use those old magazines up!

I Think This is What Will Happen…

Comprehension: The ability to understand what a text is about.

Reading-

Making predictions about what will happen allows you to see how well you child understands the story. You might be amazed by what they think will happen next!

Writing-

Writing must be practiced. We learn by doing.

Writing-

Message In a Bottle

Writing notes to each other fosters writing , reading , and family communication. Who doesn’t like to get a note?

Writing-

I Say This is What Will Happen

Let them be a mind reader again- but this time they have to put that prediction on paper. What will the story’s future hold?

Writing-

My Clip Poem

Putting together words and phrases is and important writing skill, and with this activity, it’s a lot of fun. You and your child are poets even if you don’t know it!

Visitor From Another Planet

Writing-

Sure, they act like visitors from another planet most of the time, but what if they really were? Allowing them to report to the “home world” gives their imagination a chance to shine!

Writing-

Remember When..

Chronicling events from the past helps them to be part of the future. And it’s a great way to help kids write in sequence.

(You can always edit out the embarrassing parts later!)
