Muscles in the Upper Extremity

Shoulder Muscles

Trapezius DeltoidRotator Cuff

Trapezius (Traps)Function: Raises

head and shoulders

Origin: back of the neck and upper vertebrate

Insertion: clavicle and scapula

Deltoid (Delts)Function: Raises

the arm

Origin: the spine of the scapula and the clavicle

Insertion: the top of the humerus

Rotator Cuff Known of the SITS muscles

S - Superspiatus

I - Infraspinatus

T - Teres Minor

S - Subscapularis

BackRhomboidsLatissimus DorsiErector SpinaeQuadratus Lumborium

RhomboidsFunction: (deep

muscle) extends the scapula(under the teres major)

Origin: thoracic vertebrae

Insertion: front of scapula

Latissimus Dorsi (Lats)Function: moves

the arm backward

Origin: lumbar vertebrae

Insertion: humerus

Erector SpinaeFunction: straightens

the back

Origin: lower thoracic vertebrae and top of pelvis

Insertion: back of ribs and upper thoracic vertebrae

Quadratus LumborumFunction: Elevates

the hip and abducts the hip

Origin: back of ribs and upper thoracic

Insertion: vertebrae lower thoracic vertebrae and top of pelvis

Chest Muscles

Pectoralis MajorPectoralis Minor

Serratus Anterior

Pectoralis Major (Pecs)Function: Moves

the arm across the chest

Origin: sternum and clavicle

Insertion: medial and lateral top of the humerus

Pectoralis MinorFunction: Moves the

arm from a raised position down across the chest to the opposite hip

Origin: coricoid process of the scapula

Insertion: 3rd, 4th and 5th ribs

Serratus AnteriorFunction: Moves

the scapula forward

Origin: upper ribs / side of the ribs

Insertion: scapula

Quiz1. Name one of the two parts of muscle.2. The place where a muscle is anchored is

called what? 3. The temporalis and the masseter work

together to perform what function? 4. Name two of the six muscles of the

shoulder and back.5. What muscle group works in a pair with

your Lats (Latissimus Dorsi)?

Quiz/Review1. Name one of the two parts of muscle.

Tendon, Belly2. The place where a muscle is anchored is called what?

Origin3. The temporalis and the masseter work together to

perform what function? Move the lower jaw

4. Name two of the muscles of the shoulder and back.Traps, Delts, Rotator cuff, Lats, Erector Spinae,Rhomboids

5. What muscle group works in a pair with your Lats (Latissimus Dorsi)?

Pecs (Pectoralis Major)

Arm Muscles

BicepsTricepsBrachioradialisFlexor CarpiExtensor Carpi

BicepsFunction: flexes

arm (anterior)

Origin: side of the scapula

Insertion: radius/ulna

TricepsFunction:

extends/straightens arm (posterior)

Origin: side of the scapula and the humerus

Insertion: upper ulna

BrachioradialisFunction: flexes the

elbow

Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus

Insertion: radius

Flexor CarpiFunction: Closes the

hand and fingers and flexes the wrist (anterior)

Origin: medial epicondyle of humerus

Insertion: metacarpals

Extensor CarpiFunction: Opens the

hand and fingers and extends the wrist (posterior)

Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus

Insertion: metacarpals

Stomach & AbdomenRectus Abdominis

Abs

External Obliques

Internal Obliques

Rectus AbdominisFunction: flexes

trunk of the body & pulls ribs to pelvis

Important for posture

Origin: front of pelvis

Insertion: front of ribs

ObliquesExternal Oblique:

flexes the trunk of the body and twists torso

Origin: lower ribs

Insertion: top of pelvis

Internal Oblique: Same as external, except a deeper set of muscles

top related
