The format of Application. It goes on like-
SENDER’s ADDRESS- The sender‟s address is usually put on the top left-hand corner.
DATE- The sender‟s address is followed by the date just below it. This is the date on
which the letter is being written. It is to be written in expanded form.
RECEIVER’s ADDRESS- Whether to write “To” above the address depends on the
writer‟s preference. Make sure you write the official title/name/position etc of the
receiver, as the first line of the address.
SUBJECT- Then we sum up the purpose of writing the letter in one line. This helps the
receiver focus on the subject of the letter in one glance.
SALUTATIONS- This is where you greet the person you are addressing the letter to.
Bear in mind that it is a formal letter, so the greeting must be respectful and not too
personal. The general greetings used in formal letters are “Sir” or “Madam”.
BODY- This is the main content of the letter. It is either divided into three paragraphs or
two paragraphs if the letter is briefer. The tone of the content should be formal. Do not
use any flowery language. Another point to keep in mind is that the letter should be
concise and to the point. And always be respectful and considerate in your language.
PARAGRAPH1- Begin the body of the letter by mentioning the topic in brief.
PARAGRAPH2- Elaboration of topic
PARAGRAPH3- Show your gratitude in hoping for something to be good.
End the body on a promising note, e.g., Looking forward to your positive response.
COMPLIMENTARYCLOSE- At the end of your letter, we write a complimentary
closing. The words “Yours Faithfully” are used.
SIGNATURE- Here finally you sign your name. And then write your name in block
letters beneath the signature. This is how the recipient will know who is sending the
letter.

What is a notice?
A notice is a written or printed announcement (Example - a notice for sale). It is written
in order to inform a large number of people about something that has happened or is
about to happen. It could be an upcoming event, competition, Lost and found notice or
just a piece of information to be delivered to the targeted audience. It is generally written
in a formal tone. Notices are factual and to-the-point. The language used is simple and
formal, not flowery. They are put up on display boards in schools or at public places.
Format of a notice writing
The Notice writng format should include: NAME OF THE INSTITUTION / ISSUING
AUTHORITY / NOTICE / TITLE, DATE, and WRITER‟S NAME WITH
DESIGNATION.
A notice should contain all the necessary details such as:
Name of the issuing agency (school, etc)
Date of issue/release of the notice
Title/Subject of the Event (what?)
BODY-Date/time/duration/Place/Venue (when and where?)
Authorized signatory: Name and signature (contact details)
Notice Writing Tips
Please follow the given tips while attempting a question based on Notice writing
i. Do not cross the word limit to avoid penalty of marks. The prescribed word limit
is 50 words.
ii. Repetition of any information should be avoided.
iii. Always enclose the notice in a box. Make sure you draw the box with a pencil.
iv. Keep your notice short, crisp and to-the-point.
v. Highlight the word “NOTICE” and “TITLE”. It can be either bold or underlined.

What is a preposition?
We use a preposition to relate a noun or a pronoun to some other word in the sentence. For
example, in the sentence, “The water in the glass is cold.”
The preposition “in” shows the relationship between „water‟ and „glass‟.
Preposition Meaning: „Preposition‘ is a word used to show the relationship between a noun or
a pronoun and some other word in the sentence.
The relationship includes direction, place, time, cause, manner and amount.
Preposition Examples
Prepositions are short words such as „in‟, „at‟, „on‟ etc. that usually stand in front of nouns
(sometimes also in front of gerund verbs). Some examples of preposition sentences are given
below. Each sentence will show you the type of relationship. In the sentence, She went to the store, “To” is a preposition which shows direction. There are following types of prepositions.

When a preposition consists of more than one word, it is called double preposition.
Double Preposition Examples: into, within, upto etc.
3. Compound Preposition
Compound preposition consists of two or more words.
Compound Preposition Examples: on behalf of, according to, in front of, from accross etc.
4. Participle Preposition
Participle preposition consists of words that end in “ing”. Participle Examples: regarding, barring, concerning, considering, etc.
5. Disguised Prepositions
Disguised Preposition Examples: „by‟ can be changed into „be‟, „on‟ into „a‟, and „of‟ can be
changed into „o‟ for example, 5 O‟ clock.
6. Phrase Prepositions
Group of words used with the force of a single preposition is called phrase preposition.
Phrase Preposition Examples: according to, by means of, owing to, with a view to, in place
of, in front of, in spite of, instead of, in order to, by virtue of, by way of, etc.
