A Message from Fr. Bryan
Please pray for our Holy Father Pope Francis,
Cardinal Seán O’Malley, the 184 bishops and many
women and men experts from around the world
participating in the Synod of Bishops on the
Amazon, October 6-27. Pope Francis has called this
ecclesial gathering for two reasons. First, as is his
desire to focus the world’s attention on the
“peripheries,” he is shining a bright light on the vast
geographical area known as the Amazon,
encompassing 9 governments throughout Central and
South America. This area is essential for the
ecological health of our planet, providing a vast rain
forest over 2.2 million square miles in size. As Pope
Francis states in his encyclical Laudato Si, the earth
is our “common home”. He has raised our individual
consciences in recognizing the impact that every
person has on the planet.
The other essential goal of this Synod is evangelical
namely, how to best strengthen the mission of the
Church in the Amazonian Region, particularly in
light of the scarcity of priests. There are some, Ger-
man prelates in particular, who are advocating for the
ordination of tested married men (“viri probati”) spe-
cifically in this area, while still upholding the beauty
of priestly celibacy for the Roman Rite. Clearly, this
is a controversial proposal. We shall see how the
Synod fathers and experts tackle this discussion and
what recommendations they will eventually offer to
our Holy Father.
I have two thoughts to keep in mind. First, whatever
one might think of the merit of ordaining testing
married men under these conditions, the mind of the
Holy Father in calling this Synod is directed toward
evangelization: how is the Church being called to
most effectively share her life, mission and
sacraments among the Amazonian peoples? Thus,
strengthening the faith of the people in the Amazon
is central. Secondly, as Catholics, we do not espouse
a secular view of the environment and those issues
associated with climate change. In other words, the
earth is not divine and gods are not to be found in
nature. This is paganism. Rather, this beautiful earth
and nature is a reflection of the divine and generous
God who created them (recommended reading:
Psalm 104).
