SCRUBS, or the SHRM
Club Recruitment Ultimate BiannualSocial, is held every semester for oldermembers and newer members ofSHRM to interact and have a funtime.
The event was coordinated by our very own Director of Student Affairs,
essica Higashi. We had our social atManoa District Park. We had a hugeturnout as more than 40 SHRMies
ere there! We started off SCRUBS with anintroduction from the executive boardand jumped right into our first game,“Who are you?” The objective was tolearn the other person’s name, do afunny dance, and Jan-Ken-Po todetermine who would part of theirline. In the end, there were two longlines and the losing team would haveto crawl in between the legs of the
inning team. Everyone got to know
each other’s names and had a blast.
It wouldn’t be a SCRUBS, if thereasn’t any dancing. We had four
teams of amazing dancers perform forour judges. Our talented dancers gavea memorable “SHRM down for
WHAT?!”, “Crank that”, and poppingperformances. There was a tie but we
ere all winners.
We concluded the day with some
dodgeball. SHRMies showed their armstrength and reflexes in this epicmatch. Even the people around thearea were interested in the game asthey cheered.
After that, it was time to clean up andbreak down the tent. We all made anew friend that day and SHRMies hada blast. We would like to thank Jessicaand the rest of the executive board focoming early to reserve a spot and
making sure every SHRMie had fun.

STRIKE! Was the sound you would hear atIBC’s Back to Business BowlingNight. SHRMies capped off a long
week with some fun bowling withother Shidler Clubs. We had largeturnout so the two lanes assigned werefilled with SHRMies.
We had a friendly competitionbetween our alumni and currentmembers. It’s safe to say that thecurrent members soundly defeated thealumni.
Besides bowling, you can findSHRMies interacting with other clubsor dancing to the jams that wereplaying.
It was great to see SHRMies distresseand having a fun time! They enjoyedthis fun atmosphere and look forwardto other fun events.

VOLUNTEERING is
something SHRM Aloha
prides itself in. We love givin

anyway we can.
From working at the Waikiki
Ho’olaule’a to Art After Dark
to Tour De Cure, each
community service giveseverybody a chance to work
towards one common goal,
helping others.
Our first community service a
the Waikiki Ho’olaule’a was
one that required
communication, teamwork,
and a keen eye.
Art After Dark allowed us to
see beautiful art as well as
helping out. It also gave
SHRMies a chance to look the
best as the event required the
to be spiffy.
Tour De Cure was another fun
volunteering event that made
us work as a team to get thing

InterviewMockMOCK Interview has become a
staple for all SHRMies, as it allows
them to participate in interviews with professionals and receive
feedback.
Even though it was a mock
interview, SHRMies took upon
themselves to dress in formal
business attire, and interviewed like
it was a real interview.
The professionals were veryimpressed with their efforts and
abilities to answer questions. We
would like to thank all of the
professionals that took time to help
us! Your contributions have help
SHRMies develop professionally!
Thank you for your help!

Socials
PLAY As hard as you work!
At SHRM, we understand thereneeds to be a balance ofprofessional development and fun. That’s why there were fun socialssuch as a beach day, floatilla, andtailgating planned to allowSHRMies to relax and make newfriends. When we plan beach days, we dothings with a twist. A tie – dye was what we came up with and it was a
messy and fun time. We fed hungrystomachs with Chef Jessica behindthe grill.
We were back at the beach withFloatilla, but this time it was a jointsocial with other Shidler clubs.Members had floaties and coulddrift away to relaxation.
SHRM Aloha always supports our
UH football team so it was onlyright we have a tailgate beforegame. We were joined by otherShidler Clubs, which made it extrafun.
Seeing SHRMies having fun, smiling and laughing, and makingfriends is something we strike for.

Worksho sINTERVIEWING is a majoraspect of getting a job, so we got IMan Uyeda from Proservice tohelp us.
She gave very helpful tips on whatto do before and after an interviewShe also gave clear examples of what recruiters want to hear and
how to stand out among othercandidates to increase your chanceof getting a job.
Following up with a professional was just as important as during aninterview. SHRMies were advisedto do so after every interview sothey could learn more about theorganization and be morememorable.
Thank you I-Man for yourexpertise on this topic andSHRMies had a great time learningabout interviewing.

COMPANY tours are a great way
for SHRMies to visit a company
and see the culture of it. It allows professionals to talk to them and
exchange contacts. This
beneficial relationship helps both parties.
For this semester, StaffingSolutions and New York Life
allowed us to visit their office and
see their operations. It wasfascinating to see the environment
and behind-the-scenes of each
company. We were then allowed
to ask questions to a panel.
At our Staffing Solutions Tour,
members were able to do a mock
clerical test such as a typing test. Our very own Vice President,Charise Yamatsuka, was blazing
fast at over 100 words per
minute!
For our New York Life Tour, we
were allowed to hear the success
stories of each professional andhow they positioned themselves
to get where they are now.
It was great learning from all ofthese professionals and thank you
for giving us the opportunity to
do so.

MEET OUR SHRMIES
Q#: If you had one wish, what
would it be?
Kelsey Monticalvo
My major is Human Resource Management
and I am expected to graduate in Spring
2015. Within this coming Spring semester,
one goal I have is to find an internship that
will get me experience in the HR field as wellas expand my knowledge on what i t's like to
work within HR and building
connections. Another goal I have for myself
is to find a job/career area that I
am passionate about and also
one that allows me to help
and serve others. I find a lot
of fulfillment out of serving
others to help them work
through situations or to help
them achieve their goals, so
finding something that fits thiswith my career path would be
ideal to achieving this goal.
A year ago, I tried out one of the otherbusiness clubs, joined without knowing
anyone, but it wasn't a good fit for me and I
never really tried any other clubs. At the
beginning of this semester, a couple of my
classmates mentioned SHRM to me and
suggested I join with them. This appealed to
me because I would actually know a couplepeople prior to joining and I also heard it
was one of the smaller business clubs. With
“I would want a job after
graduation"
- Isaac Lui
“I want to meet a nice girl."
-Zane Wu
“I want to be financiallystable and live comfortably
with my family."
-Ross Nakagawa
“I would like to curecancer.”
-Roy Franco
"I would like unlimited
wishes so I solve all of the
world's problems.
-Rasheeda Grant
"I would like to not worry
about money and tuition."
-Andrew Kuboyama
"I would like to have my
own nonprofit organization
that helps people prepare
for the business world."Alyssa-Ashley Lardizabal
"I would like to create a
scholarship for Native
Hawaiian students that
wants to get into the
business world."
-Deone Costa
that in mind, I went to one of the meetings
and felt welcomed, and decided to give it a
shot. SHRM has taught me a lot about being
in a professional setting and how to get a
job through all the workshops, office tours
and mock interviews that I've attended this
semester. I've learned how to better buildmy resume, how to approach professionals,
the do's and don'ts of interviewing, and
mostly to just be myself through it all. It's also
helped me to think about the
different areas of HR that I could
possibly pursue and which ones
my interest me more than
others.
In 5 years, I see myself in an HRmanagement
position. Although I'm from
California, I've really loved living in
Hawaii and it's been a great fit for me,
so I know I want to stay here. Working with
Hawaiian Airlines has really appealed to mebecause they are doing really well in their
industry and I really admire the way they run
their business/company through my own
personal experience and interaction, as well
as things that I've heard and read. I seemyself finding a good fit and securing a
position with the HR department in Hawaiian
Airlines.

My major is Business Management and I will
be graduating this December (2014). Mygoals are to one day hold a management
position with a great company and
eventually develop my own business.
I joined SHRM because I wanted to get more
involved with school activities during my last
semester. At first my friend wanted
me to join a Fraternity with him.
But with my schedule I did not
have time to pledge. I than
saw the SHRM table set up at
Shidler recruiting new
members. That’s where I met
Arik Ma who broke down
what the club was all about.
I knew this would be the perfect
opportunity to get involved on
campus and yet still have time to work my
on-campus job and have time to study.
I’ve learned quite a bit while at SHRM. The
guest speakers were awesome and gave us
valuable information on how to do well in an
interview. SHRM also helped me clean up
my resume to make it look very presentable
to employers.
My favorite part about SHRM would have to
be all of the social activities that are held
during the semester. This includes club
picnics, tailgates and Karaoke. Aw yes
Karaoke would have to be my
favorite part about SHRM. I also enjoyedmeeting so many new people that if I was
not in SHRM I would have never met. I enjoy
working out, listening to music and simplyspending time with friends and family. I see
myself working with a great company and
working just as hard there as I’ve been
working in school.
I also see myself traveling the
world and if the opportunity
arises I would love to work
abroad in another country.

SHRM WELLNESS TIPSHealthy Eating
Helpguide.org
1.
Simplify
Instead of being overly concerned with counting
calories or measuring portion sizes, think of your diet in
terms of color, variety, and freshness. This way it should
be easier to make healthy choices. Focus on finding
foods you love and easy recipes that incorporate a
few fresh ingredients. Gradually, your diet will become
healthier and more delicious.
2.
Start slow and make changes to eating habits
over time
Trying to make your diet healthy overnight isn’t realistic
or smart. Changing everything at once usually leads to
cheating or giving on your new eating plan. Make
small steps, and as your small changes become habits,
you can continue to add healthier choices to your diet
3.
Every change you make to improve your dietmatters You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to
completely eliminate foods you enjoy to have a
healthy diet. The long term goal is to feel good, have
more energy, and reduce the risk of cancer and
disease. Don’t let your missteps derail you— every
healthy food choice you make counts.
4. Smaller portions
When dining out, choose a starter instead of an entree, split a dish with a friend, and don't order supersized
anything. At home, use smaller plates, think about
serving sizes in realistic terms, and start small. If you
don't feel satisfied at the end of a meal, try adding
more leafy green vegetables or rounding off the meal
with fresh fruit.

5. Eat Breakfast Design your sleep environment to establish the
conditions you need for sleep. Your bedroom should
be cool – between 60 and 67 degrees. Your bedroomshould also be free from any noise that can disturb your
sleep. Finally, your bedroom should be free from any
light. Check your room for noises or other distractions.
This includes a bed partner's sleep disruptions such as
snoring.
6. Try not to think of certain foods as “off-limits”
When you ban certain foods or food groups, it is
natural to want those foods more, and then feel like a
failure if you give in to temptation. If you are drawntowards sweet, salty, or unhealthy foods, start by
reducing portion sizes and not eating them as often. If
the rest of your diet is healthy, eating a burger and fries
once a week probably won’t have too much of a
detrimental effect on your health. Eating junk food just
once a month will have even less of an impact. As you
reduce your intake of unhealthy foods, you may find
yourself craving them less or thinking of them as only
occasional indulgences.
7.
Listen to your body
Ask yourself if you are really hungry, or have a glass of
water to see if you are thirsty instead of hungry. During
a meal, stop eating before you feel full. It actually
takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that
it has had enough food, so eat slowly.
8.
Avoid eating at night Try to eat dinner earlier in the day and then fast for 14-
16 hours until breakfast the next morning. Early studies
suggest that this simple dietary adjustment — eating
only when you’re most active and giving your digestive
system a long break each day — may help to regulate
weight. After-dinner snacks tend to be high in fat and
calories so are best avoided, anyway.
