SUGGESTED SHUTDOWN PROCEDURES

FOR COOLING TOWERS

1.  Completely drain, flush and rinse cooling tower (distribution deck, wet deck/fill, basin, splash areas,etc.) and remove all loose particles.

2.  Isolate the condenser tubes and open for inspection.  Note: ensure that all areas of the system are cool(ambient temperature) prior to draining.

3.  If required, rinse the condenser tubes and/or mechanically clean them, preferably prior to evaporation

to dryness takes place.

4.  While still isolated, fill the condenser from the closed, chilled water system (assuming it is adequately

treated with an industry standard corrosion inhibitor) to the lower section of the condenser bundle.Continue to fill until the unit is flooded and chilled water is flowing from the top of the condenser

 bundle.

5.  Close the valves and leave the unit isolated and completely flooded with treated water.

OTHER INFORMATION

1.  Isolation valves can simply be reopened at startup time.

2.  Condenser tubes can also be stored dry; however, immediate cleaning or rinsing should be done so

that suspended solids/debris does not harden during evaporation to dryness.

Storing dry is less than ideal as it allows 'flash rusting' to take place which will contribute to dissolved

solids, suspended solids and discolouration on startup.
