Russia is the largest country in the world, at 17,075,400 square kilo-meters (6,592,800 sq mi), covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area. Russia is also the world's ninth most populous country with nearly 144 million people in November 2014
Siberia Economic Forum aims to shed
new light on this vast and significant
place in Russian Federation.
Siberia is the largest have the largest
region in Russian Federation. With 40
million inhabitants, Siberia is signifi-
cantly much wealthier place in Russia,
which economy relies heavily on its nat-
ural resources.
Siberia is an extensive geographical re-
gion, and by the broadest definition is
also known as North Asia. Siberia has
been historically part of Russia since the
17th century.
The territory of Siberia extends east-
wards from the Ural Mountains to the
watershed between the Pacific and Arc-
tic drainage basins. Siberia stretches
southwards from the Arctic Ocean to the
hills of north-central Kazakhstan and to the
national borders of Mongolia and China. With
an area of 13.1 million square kilometres, Sibe-
ria accounts for 77% of Russia's land area.
Siberia is an important yet often overlooked
region, and hence merits extended considera-
tion. Few parts of the world are so consistently
ignored, at least in the English-language media,
which almost always focuses on the western, or
European, parts of Russia, particularly Mos-
cow, St. Petersburg, and Caucasus.
Thus, in most people’s imagination, in the West
and even in Russia itself, Siberia looks like an
iceberg: big, cold, mostly hidden from view.
Siberia is extraordinarily rich
in minerals, containing ores of
almost all economically valu-
able metals. It has some of the
world's largest deposits of
nickel, gold, lead, coal, mo-
lybdenum, gypsum, dia-
monds, diopside, silver and
zinc, as well as extensive un-
exploited resources of oil and
natural gas. Around 70% of
Russia's developed oil fields
are in the Khanty-Mansiysk
region.[ Russia contains about
40% of the world's known
resources of nickel at the
Norilsk deposit in Siberia.
Norilsk Nickel is the world's
largest nickel and palladium
producer.
Siberian agriculture is severely re-
stricted by the short growing season
of most of the region. However, in
the southwest where soils are ex-
ceedingly fertile black earths and the
climate is a little more moderate,
there is extensive cropping of wheat,
barley, rye and potatoes, along with
the grazing of large numbers of
sheep and cattle. Elsewhere food
production, owing to the poor fertil-
ity of the podzolic soils and the ex-
tremely short growing seasons, is
restricted to the herding of reindeer
in the tundra—which has been prac-
ticed by natives for over 10,000 years.
Siberia has the world's largest forests.
Timber remains an important source of
revenue, even though many forests in
the east have been logged much more
rapidly than they are able to recover.
The Sea of Okhotsk is one of the two or
three richest fisheries in the world ow-
ing to its cold currents and very large
tidal ranges, and thus Siberia produces
over 10% of the world's annual fish
catch.

The Maritime Silk Road, officially the 21st Century Maritime Silk Route Eco-nomic Belt is a Chinese strategic initiative to increase investments and foster collab-oration across the historic Silk Road. Chi-na–Pakistan Economic Corridor is an ex-tension to proposed Silk Road. The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is an ongoing development meg-aproject which aims to con-nect Gwadar Port in southwestern Paki-stan to China’s northwestern autono-mous region of Xinjiang, via a network of highways, railways and pipelines to transport oil and gas. The economic corri-dor is considered central to China–Pakistan relations and will run about 3,000 km from Gwadar to Kashgar. Over-all construction costs are estimated at over $46 billion, with the entire project expected to be completed in several years. The Corridor is an extension of China’s proposed 21st century Silk Road initiative. According to a First post report, "this is the biggest overseas investment by China announced yet and the corridor is expected to be op-erational within three years and will be a strategic game changer in the region, which would go a long way in making Pakistan a richer and stronger entity than ever before. Gwadar Port, world 3rd deepest, is a warm-water, deep-sea port situated on the Arabian Sea/ Indian Ocean at Gwadar in Balochistan province of Pakistan. The port is a major destina-tion in the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor. Gwadar is strategically located on the western end of Baluchistan coast on the opposite end of the Gulf of Oman which is an important route for oil tankers bound for Japan and western countries out of Gulf. Since outflow of goods from western China and Central Asia reaching Gwadar will pass through this overland
trade route. According to Arthur D. Little (Malaysia), the main consultant firm of the Gwadar development phases, low-cost land and labour are available, there is proximity to oil and gas resources and Gulf countries, there are some agricultural and mineral resources, while there could be tax-free status for in-vestments and trade. The Gwadar Port is expected to generate billions of dollars in revenues and create at least two million jobs. Gwadar has the potential to acquire the status of a center-piece as a gate to the Strait of Hormuz; it can compete with the United Arab Emirates ports by improving the exiting links to the Caspian Region, thus providing a better trade route to the landlocked Caspian Region. Gwadar has the potential to be de-veloped into a full-fledged regional hub and a trans-shipment port in the future.
