about Singing City
Founded by Dr. Elaine Brown and now under the direction of Jeffrey Brillhart, Singing City has been uniting people through music since 1948. The particular shape of its mission is unique and includes, at its core, excellence in choral performance combined with educational outreach and the expressed intent of bringing together people of all walks of life, races, ethnic groups, and socioeconomic levels. Dr. Brown devoted her life to this mission. She believed then — and history has borne out the clarity of her vision — that great social deeds could be accomplished through the medium of outstanding musical artistry in the community.

The Boards of Singing City and West Philadelphia Children’s Choir have agreed to merge! After intense discussions and planning for almost half a year, a final agreement to merge was endorsed unanimously and enthusiastically by both boards in June 2010. Singing City and the West Philadelphia Children’s Choir have a strong mission, shared vision, and values. What does this mean?
West Philadelphia Children’s Choir will become an integral part of Singing City with a new name: Singing City Children’s Choir.
More children throughout the city can • participate in the futureIncreased opportunities for programming and • performances for the Children’s ChoirMembers of Singing City Choir can choose to • mentor Children’s Choir singers, sharing music and support with both children and familiesSinging City now offers singing opportunities • for people ages 8 to 80!
Under the direction of Steve Fisher (pictured above), the Singing City Children’s Choir shapes the future by making a difference in the lives of children through musical excellence. It is open to children in grades 3-7 and offers a learning environment designed to provide a rich and rewarding musical experience for each child. Learn more at singingcity.org.
The merger was accomplished through a generous grant to
Singing City from the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage
