Report from the Webinars prepared for the purpose of the EU Awareness project

Webinars were developed by the Clube Intercultural Europeu in cooperation with external
experts. Topics and issues embraced in short, up to 10 minutes videos corresponded to those
of the debates organize between June – December 2019. They are aimed at: completing
information which has been provided during the debates and foster discussion on future of
Europe.
Presented approach resulted in creation of six webinars and cooperation with 2 experts
and 2 entities which allows as reach wider audience and may lead to further initiatives in
the context of media literacy and UE relavant issues.

Representation of European Commission in
Portugal declared their availability to assit in
Webinars preparation. Due to the current
situation (state of emergency related to
COVID-19) interview with The Head of
Representation, Sofia Alves, was postponed.

EXPERTS
Our Webinars were prepared in cooperation with following experts:
PAULA LOPES
Assistant Professor at Autónoma University
of Lisbon, coordinator of the undergraduate
and master's degrees in Communication
Sciences.
PhD in Sociology at ISCTE-IUL, with a grant
from the Portuguese Foundation for Science
and Technology (FCT). She is researcher at
the Center for Communication and Society
Studies at the University of Minho, member of OBSERVARE and co-founder of NIP-C @ M, UAL.
Her research focuses on media and digital literacy (evaluation of practices and skills), media and
digital consumption, and media / citizenship relationship practices (in her doctoral thesis she
explores this type of relationships and submits them to empirical evidence, questioning “if” and
“how” media literacy has an impact on individuals' citizenship practices).
She is the author of several scientific articles published in leading journals such as
"Communications", "OBS *", "Social Analysis", "Janus", "Media and Journalism" and "Studies in
Communication".

Publicist at „Público” and „Saturday”,
manager, former leader of the Socialist
Party, critic of "situationism" in the
Political Parties and defender of a broad
reform of the political system. Author of
the book "Portugal a Half-Rod".
Between 2011/2016 Board Member and
Executive Director of the Consortium
E.xample – Internationally representing
the Portuguese industry of educational
technologies. His professional path include: Board Member of the Foundation for the Mobile
Communications and ICT Advisor to the Ministry of Public Works, Transports and
Communications of Portugal.

I WEBINAR: Critical Thinking and Media with Paula Lopes
Presented Webinar was aimed at exploring critical thinking and media literacy as a concept,
drawing attention to the importance of promoting Media Literacy. The role of media in
democracy was embraced in discussion with Paula Lopes.

II WEBINAR: Where is the knowledge we lost in information? with Paula Lopes
Based on Thomas Eliot remark, second webinar sought to introduce relevant concept in the
context of media literacy, debunking and analysing so-called „fake news” and their impact.
Following first Webinar we discussed media literacy as a basic competence which enable citizens
actively and consciousely involved themseves into public life. Paula Lopes explained the
difference between desinformation campaign, misinformation and so-called fake news.

III WEBINAR: Euroscepticism and Future of Europe with Daniel Adrião
Third Webinar was aimed at fostering discussion on Euroscepticim and its roots. Our expert
introduced basic assumptions lying behind this concept and its impact on debate about the
future of Europe. Discussion focused on Eurocepticism in portuguese context.

IV WEBINAR: Euromyths and their impact with Daniel Adrião
This Webinar was dedicated to Euromyths and the way how they impact and shape portuguese
perception of EU. Some common euromyths as „refugees stealing our jobs” were discussed.

V WEBINAR: How to shape the future of the EU with Daniel Adrião
Fifth Webinar aimed at discussing future of Europe. How portuguese see future of Europe,
what are the most relevant challanges Europe faces currently, what we may expect / needs to
happen to succesfully shape the future of the EU?

VI WEBINAR: Importance of the EU with Daniel Adrião
With this webinar we try to respond to the question if EU really matters and has an impact on
daily life of Portuguese citizens.
