SIXTH FORM REPORT CLASS OF 2015 – 2016
2
We are extremely proud of our Sixth Form students: they work hard and play hard, creating a very special
atmosphere at the school. We aim to provide an environment where students can grow socially as well as
academically, where they can take increasing responsibility for their learning and for their career options.
Students begin to plan on their choice of subjects during the last term of Year 11, choosing four AS courses
to study during the Lower Sixth form i.e. at AS level. At ADHS, we do our very best to accommodate all
combinations of subject choices.
At the start of sixth form classes, AS level students have an Orientation Day where they are introduced to
the The Head of year and the faculty. Newly admitted students from other schools are welcomed in to the
ADHS family. Students who come new are given special support in the early weeks, each one having a
"Buddy" from among the year group and individual meetings with Head of Year / Head of Sixth Form to
help with settling in.
AS level students get to choose any one subject from the four option blocks. Arabic and Physical Education
is compulsory. A level students have to opt for a minimum of 3 subjects. A level Physical Education &
English was introduced this year after feedback from students regarding the subjects they liked to opt at the AS level.
In addition to the mainstream examined subjects, ADHS Sixth Form offers tMBA as an extension course. t-
MBA Digital is an online, engaging and personalized learning platform for 21st century skills. It is an
EdExcel accredited model and has a proven record of providing 21st century skills through business and
technology oriented education practices for high school learners. t-MBA Digital is a self-paced system and
thus, completion is dependent upon the students’ engagement. At ADHS, the program is offered mandatorily
to all Sixth Form students during the PEP lessons.
VISION
“An innovative and dynamic Sixth Form that inspires students to achieve
excellence .”

This is a very exciting time in the students' lives as their experiences in the Sixth Form will shape their
future studies and careers. We provide our students with a detailed programme of support for University
applications and advice on career choices. In addition to this, we have a continuous and
comprehensive Career Guidance Programme for the Sixth Form students through out the academic year .
On Wednesdays, we invite educational consultants and motivational speakers from different career fields to
help students charter their career pathways, get information about higher education abroad and locally, and
introspect their career choices.

A formal Community Outreach Program (COP), to help our students reach out to the society with more
interaction, is part of the curriculum for the sixth form students. This is a tool aimed at increasing students'
active participation in community service. These activities are educational and provide a sense of continuity
to the learning experiences. It allows individuals to interact with their environment - the school community /
members of the family and friends / community groups etc.
COP gives the following opportunities:
to develop Sixth formers’ personal leadership skills as well as techniques to apply these skills
in their future professions
to blend community service and activities so that both are practiced and each is enriched by
the other.
to participate and form an essential community service that builds, utilizes and provides a
framework for academic and civic skills, abilities and competencies.
In the past three years the Community Outreach Programme of ADHS has been actively involved in various
social programs like Nepal Relief Fund, collecting stationery materials for school in India and Philippines,
Blood Donation Camps, volunteering at Latifa Hospital, Manzil and Al Noor Center for children with Special
Needs, collecting food items for labour camps, fund raising, uniform and used clothes distribution in village
schools in India and providing assistance with Art equipment for a school in Nepal etc.
New Initiative :

We now have an IT infrastructure that enables teachers and sixth form students to access the internet across
the school. The students of the sixth form use their personal laptops and the school’s network, creating a
typical 21st century learning environment.
The 21st century skills are a set of abilities that students need to develop in order to succeed in the
information age and the Sixth form curriculum has been consciously designed with the aim to provide
opportunities to develop these skills. The ADHS Sixth Form Learning Hub has been created to promote
collaboration and communication among students. Subject teachers will be uploading homework regularly
and follow up on the
participation of students.

Disease is a widespread epidemic and the only
alternative to cure it is prevention.
On the 16th of December 2015, Dr. Heena Zaheer
from the Dubai Healthcare Authorities visited our
school to address the girls of years 10 to 13 on an
emerging disease -Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
(PCOS). She focused on its reasons, outcomes and
long term health implications. It was also highly
stressed that controlling obesity is a national
priority as childhood obesity brings about a higher
chance of PCOS in the future. It was alarming to know that obesity is prevalent in about 40-
70% of the population in the Gulf States which has urged the country to bring an awareness
amongst teenage girls.
The session was concluded with Dr. Heena stressing on the fact that obesity is a national
priority as important as terrorism and flooding. She urged us to maintain a healthy lifestyle
in every way possible. The talk was highly informative and left us pondering as to how we can
modify our lifestyles
Yahya and Ali Alvi Shabbir of Year 12 have won prizes for debating, position
papers and for their contribution at IHS – MUN. Devang Singh of Year 12
also participated in MUN .

Al- Noor training center welcomed us Diyafites with open arms
and warm smiles. No moment in life could ever surpass this
experience of being near these extraordinary children. We
deem ourselves fortunate not because we do not require
special help to carry out daily tasks; but because we have been
given the best opportunity to learn the significance of
determination and pure joy from the angels at Al-Noor.
Diyafites from the Sixth Form went for an orientation to the Al Noor Centre on Wednesday, the 7th
of October. An impression from Nadia Nayyar from 12G.
As part of the skill based
sessions, 29 of our students from
year 12 attended the dining
etiquette session at Emirates
Academy for Hospitality
Management on Wednesday, 4th
November. The training included
an exposure to careers in the
hospitality industry. They got to
visit Madinat Jumeriah and were also taken on a tour around the different departments in the
Academy followed by lunch….. a time to practice their dining etiquette skills.
Students of Year 12 who have opted
for Environmental Management had a
memorable visit to the Desalination
Plant in Jebel Ali on 19th October.
They had access to view the working
of the desalination process - start
to finish, only to return with an
overwhelming appreciation for the many blessings in their life, including access to clean water.

Many have different answers to the question of what
makes the world go round, but arguably the most
definitive one is energy. Human civilization as we know
it would cease to exist without it, and hence, equipping
our students with the knowledge of how to manage this
precious resource is essential. The Abu Dhabi
Sustainability Week 2016 invited our students to the
summit on the 19th of January, 2016, which included
events from inspiring talks on acting on your ideas to
interactive sessions on sustainability.
“The atmosphere and positive energy radiated by the organisers was incomparable to any
event we have ever had the privilege to participate in.” These are
the comments by our Sixth Form Volunteers for the Emirates Lit
Festival. Reynard, Yestin, Umeesha and Somer from Al Diyafah
High School had a wonderful time volunteering at the EAFL.
“Lit Fest team was extremely wonderful and so much fun to be
around! It was a worthwhile experience and we met quite a few
famous faces, What a rewarding experience it was! It was a
celebration of Life………”
Tolerance of other cultures is the key to
attaining a world that is worth being proud
of, and the best way to achieve this is
nothing other than to immerse oneself into
the culture itself. Aditya Mathew of Year
13 got an opportunity to travel to the
United States of America, to visit the
NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama,
as well as other thrilling detours such as New York and Atlanta, Georgia. The exhilarating
itinerary included everything from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building, and
of course, the educational Space Camp itself.

Rolling thunder rumbled down the hallways on Monday morning, resonating from none other
than the pounding footfalls of our soon-to-be ADHS football team members, all vying for the
esteemed positions. Having already made it through the initial phase of selections, these all-
stars were already winners, but clearly our students always have their eyes on ever higher
goals. The students and teachers alike, as ever, anticipate nothing less than outstanding
laurels from the final decided upon team, and we wish them all the best.
The Inter House Basketball and Football Tournaments for both boys and girls were held on
the 13th and 15th of December,2015 . Students from classes 7 to 13 participated in the
tournament and enjoyed every moment of the game.
The matches were played under three categories, Years 11, 12 &13. Playing to the best of
their abilities, the boys and Girls represented their houses in the true spirit of being
“THOROUGH” Diyafites. All the matches of the tournament were well contested and all four
houses played the game with the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The Pre Sports day saw the clash of the titans- the four
houses. The arena being the Basket-ball court, the warriors
displayed their might in the tug of war contest. The crowds
cheered their house representatives. It required as much brain
as brawn to gauge the opponents’ strength and plan a strategy
accordingly.
The rush of adrenaline, the toil of the journey,
and the thrill of victory….Few outlets offer
them as much as sports can, and the grandeur
of competition simply amplifies it all. On the
8th of February, 2016, the under-18 boys
football team of Al Diyafah High School took
part in the Oxford School Interschool football
competition, an invaluable opportunity to
develop their skills in both the game and in
leadership and teamwork. They truly gave it
their all and ultimately came third beating The
Pristine Private school 3-2, igniting a passion in
all of them to try again next time to attain the first position. We heartily congratulate all
our players for their effort.
Towards the end of the school year, an under 19 cricket team was made ,
and practice sessions were held . The practice sessions consisted of 18
players who were trained for 5 weeks and a squad of 15 players was then
formed. The squad consisted of players from Year 8-13. Sixth Form
team members are Yestin, Elton, Ashley, Dharmit, Shawn Soares and
Shashank .

What is noteworthy is that the Year 12 students
participated in this project whole heartedly and it was
evident in their beaming smiles.
These, are our ‘confident’, ‘competent’ and ‘caring’ young
men and women.
On the morning of 20th November 2015,
about 180 Diyafites marched under the
Diyafah banner in support of the Beat

reiterated their commitment towards a
healthy lifestyle.

From the 20th to the 23rd of December, Sixth Form students of Al Diyafah volunteered to
teach the support staff English and ICT. The classes were held in the school premises and
was completely student led. The sixth form students taught them basic communication skills
and letter writing format over the past four days. It was a wonderful experience for
Diyafah’s young leaders to interact with their students and to be able to educate them about
the modern amenities of communication and technology. The lesson plans were made by

Hospital. The hospital’s Blood Bank provides blood to several hospitals within the UAE. A
medical team from the Blood Donation Center visited the school to collect the blood from
the donors. The annual blood donation camp is organized by the Community Outreach
Programme of the school which involves students of Year 13 of the school. The response was
overwhelming as about 132 donors attended the camp of which 62 successfully donated
450ml blood each. In totality we donated 27900ml blood. A giant step for the ADHS
Community Outreach Programme - The Dubai Blood Donation Centre team were extremely
glad and appreciative of our students and parents. We take this opportunity to sincerely and
whole heartedly THANK each and every parent, alumni, student, teacher, admin staff,
support staff, and all well-wishers of the Diyafah Family for so ardently supporting us.
The ADHS mini carnival was a super-duper hit. It was a novel
endeavour with students of Year 7 to 10 taking charge of stalls
with help from their seniors of Year 12. They coordinated, set
up, marketed and ensured that a handsome amount was
collected for charity. The game stalls were also a big hit with
all the students. Year 5 and 6 students held separate stalls. A
memorable day for Diyafites- a day in the service of humanity.

to predict. In order to prepare them as best we can, a Dining Etiquette workshop, held on the
20th of January, 2016, was conducted, in which the students were educated on how one must
carry oneself in a formal dining setting. Adding yet another skill to their repertoire, the
students greatly valued the successful event.

interacted with the participating universities and understood the different procedures. They
thanked the school for introducing them to the many avenues open for higher education.
Overall the Career Fair was a great success as it gave students an opportunity to explore
different subject areas and to be aware of the entry requirements to qualify for admissions.
Feed back from students on Career Guidance Interface
The Career Guidance Interface has been immensely helpful to me this year. In the span of an hour and
twenty minutes every week, I’ve learned about how to ace my job/college interview, how to write
professional e-mails, how to manage money and most importantly – What skills my future course
expects me to have. I’m really grateful for this opportunity and would love to attend more sessions to
gain more knowledge at the end of the day. Maryam Javed , A level

as the rally of teachers took their positions, their entrance marked with thunderous applause.
Walking down the ceremonious red carpet, name after name the teachers were called upon,
each followed by a sweet, personalized message based on why the students appreciate their
efforts. Without missing a beat, the event shifted to the play prepared by the students, in
which the audience was treated to a live visualisation of their interpretation of what goes on
inside the mind of our dedicated mentors. A sonorous performance of a song by our talented
singers was met with much enthusiasm, and a rhythmic, upbeat dance performance wrapped up
the day’s impressive display.
The students were really excited as they gathered in the stage area to welcome the Virgin
Radio Breakfast show hosts. Once the limo came in through the school gates, the cheering by
the students, staff and parents reached its crescendo – the enigmatic Kris Fade, the petite
Priti Malik, the towering Brent Black and Big Rossi – were simply floored by the Diyafah

welcome. They were entertained by the talented finalists of the talent contest and a few
lucky students received goody bags to take home. The newly elected student council
efficiently managed the crowd and took care of the celebrity guests.
To help bridge the gap between students and
teachers, a healthy staff-parent relationship and
communication is invaluable, and the KS5 Coffee
Morning adeptly serves its purpose in doing so.
The various enthralling changes and plans set for
this academic year were methodically presented
to the audience, and a conducive and eased
atmosphere allowed the interaction and questions
to flow freely, parents sharing personal insight on
how to help mold confident, competent, and caring
individuals. In the KS5 Coffee Morning, Ms.
Praveena Sudheer and Ms. Flavia Castelino touched upon myriad topics related to student
welfare and success, ranging from time management and study habits to the various events
planned for the year. Overall, the event was an inconceivable success, and all are ready and
raring to tackle this exciting school year.
Diyafah was a sea of pink as it commemorated its Founder’s Day on Tuesday, 3rd November.
Founder’s Day assembly is a tradition followed at ADHS every year. Generations have gone through
Diyafah School but this day in her memory has been celebrated with much solemnity by staff and
pupils of Diyafah school ever since and will. On this Special day, the staff and students came in the
best of their pink attire to observe the Pink Day and raise an awareness towards Breast Cancer. This
year too, at the special assembly organized by Year 13, students lit candles and placed flowers in her
memory. Many of the guests, including the school Chairman, Governors and Parent Council members
were moved by the performance, which included a short skit and montage of all 34 years of Al

Diyafah. Students presented their warm thoughts through insightful poems and reflective speeches.
Veteran teachers who had worked with Mrs. D’Cunha were felicitated.
The Founder’s Day celebrations concluded with the inauguration of the new Sixth Form annexe, a
testament of how far Mrs Winnie's dream has come. The new annexe was named the ‘Winnie D’Cunha
Sixth Form Centre’.
In response to the initiative of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai,
launched through his Twitter account, ADHS participated in the
initiative of raising the UAE flag simultaneously with other
members of the UAE community at 12 noon, 3rd November.
Students, teachers and staff gathered in the basketball court to
raise the UAE flag at 12 noon in the presence of the Management
and the Senior leadership team. They then sang in unison with the
National Anthem which was played through the school intercom system.
22nd to 25th November
has been declared as
the UAE innovation
week. The week aims at
promoting a culture of
innovation in the UAE
and emphasizes the
importance of
nurturing innovation in the future generations. We, the teacher and student learner community at
ADH, have pledged our commitment to the initiative.
In honor of the brave soldiers who lost their lives in Yemen defending
our country, the UAE observes Martyr’s Day every 30th November,
henceforth. In accordance to this, all students in Al Diyafah from Year1
to Year 13 gathered on the field to mark the solemn event. The
proceedings began with respectful and honorable words from our Head
of School, Ms. Neetha Shetty, outlining the day’s incredible significance.

A school-wide minute of silence then commenced, all present at attention and with steeled
faces, followed by the playing of the National Anthem, during which the UAE flag was
hoisted, encouraging those gathered. By the end, it was certain that the martyrs shall
forever remain in our memory for their courageous and invaluable efforts in protecting the
land we proudly call home.
“Talent is good. Practice is better. Passion is best.”
Diyafites set the stage on fire with a fantabulous display of
talent on the much awaited Secondary Talent Day held on the
16th of December. The confidence and poise of the
participants was applauded by an equally energetic audience
that cheered their peers. Talent, Practice and passion –all
three were evident in the colourful staging.
A superabundance of singing and dancing talent was manifested that awed the spectators.
The Judges surely must have had a tough time judging the contestants who were all on par
with each other. The instrumental presentations, albeit a few, sufficed to negate their
limited numbers.
January; the month of choices. Our Head of school, Ms. Neetha Shetty collaborated with a
few secondary students to present the New Year’s Assembly. It was a colourful insight on
the resolutions of most Diyafites, as they
swore to be better than they were the
year before and unleash their potentials.
2016 also happens to be the most
significant year for students, as they write
their board exams. A short skit on how our
choice to be motivated and manage time
was presented by the Sixth Form
Students. Undoubtedly, the students have
begun their new year with new found joie
de vivre.
Much like the metaphorical Jack, the students of Al Diyafah would surely be dull if they followed ‘all
work and no play’.

FUN TRIP
31
Hence, almost an annual tradition at this point, KS5 was treated to an outing on the 21st of January,
2016, in which the Year 12 students embarked on a
Desert Safari, and the Year 13 students visited the
beach (JBR). In this opportunity to unwind and have fun,
the students further enriched their lives and hearts. By
the end, they all recuperated from the toil of their
examinations and are prepared for further challenges
that may approach.
The 4 houses were led by their
Captains and Vice Captains, and they
marched in the glory of their
colours. Going along the theme, the 4
houses were dressed as the 4
elements – Marco Polo as Earth,
William Wordsworth as Water,
Jesse Owens as Nature and Albert
Einstein as Fire. They were judged
by parent volunteers on the basis of
their marching, presentation,
creativity and the consistency with the theme. Albert Einstein won the trophy for the girls’
march past, while William Wordsworth won the boys’ trophy. The drill display and band
display were spectacular with more than 100 students participating.
The athletes lit the tracks on fire in the races that followed. All houses waited with bated
breath to know the final tally of all the points. The House trophy was won by William
Wordsworth for the boys, while it was won by Albert Einstein for the girls.

On the 30th of September 2015, the newly elected core council was
introduced to the school through a splendid assembly. The core council
presented their assembly with the theme –Leadership and Unity. They
performed a skit that was humorously executed with the moral being
alone we can do so little, together we can do so much and that every
battle can only be won with an army beside you. The council then came
forward, assuring us about all the responsibilities that they would carry
out throughout the upcoming year. We welcome the newly elected
student council and wish them best of luck for the future

An excerpt from the write up by the Head Girl, Sowmya Gopalakrishnan from 12G :
“High achievement always takes place
in the framework of high
expectations.”
A special assembly was conducted
wherein the Secondary students were
made aware of various aspects of
Sheikh Mohammed’s vision for UAE &
new developments in Education.
The students were made aware of the
expectations laid upon them and the
targets that they need to achieve.
The assembly was conducted by
Leanne, Ricky Advani & Sowmya Gopalakrishnan who briefed the students on National Agenda,
Vision 2021 and Child Protection Policy at ADHS.
It was facilitated by our Principal and Head of school, who conducted the workshop
with the theme, ‘leadership and teamwork’.
The success criteria of the workshop involved recognizing leadership qualities and
working together as a team in order to optimally complete a specific task, in this case,
building a paper airplane.
The students were divided into 7 groups, and each group had a leader. The leader
planned a lesson separately while the remaining group members took part in a paper
folding activity that illustrated that everyone is unique. Finally, the group leaders
taught the members how to make the plane and each plane was tested to see how far
it went. Overall, it was an enthralling experience that will be etched in our memories
forever.

Key stage 5 are the 2 very essential years in the life of a teenage student, and most of
the times they don't realize that. We have to take very important decisions that our future
depends on but we take all of these very lightly. Al Diyafah understands this teenage
phase very well and knows exactly how to handle their sixth form students. There's a
perfect balance of education, career counseling, extra curricular activities, and of course,
fun! Despite the difficulty and the huge amounts of portions for AS and A levels, the sixth
form staff takes time out to help the sixth form students with university applications and
admission processes. Al diyafah's sixth form staff is very open minded and takes
students' input seriously.

NAJMUS
YEAR 13
I would describe year 12 as a roller coaster ride . There were highs and
there were lows. It was fast paced and at times there was a moment
where you waited for the drop. There is a vast difference between year
11 and sixth form , one such example is that in Year 11 everything was
done for us . We were pushed by our teachers to excel constantly. Sixth
form is where we push ourselves , though we feel like the teachers are
not there , they are silently molding us. They set up career fairs for us
to get a better look at life outside of school life , our counselors
tirelessly work with us to make life long choices and dealing with our
constantly changing decisions . If I had to use one word to describe
Sixth Form it would be "different" . A different perspective on life ,
different career choices , different changes , different teachers , a
different experience all together.
Sarah ,Year 13
The ADHS Sixth Form can best be described as the final launch pad to
our lives ahead, be it through the myriad opportunities like community
service, various character building responsibilities and duties, or the
invaluable Career Guidance Interface. We are aptly facilitated in our
endeavours by the exclusive Sixth Form building, as well as the tireless
and dedicated efforts of our teachers; and overall, we feel well
equipped in tackling this crucial stage in our lives.
