NOTICE TO CANDIDATES

In order to be most favorably considered for balloting, a candidate for nomination must

file a Letter of Intent with the Secretary of the Commission by January 10, 2011 along with a

completed copy of the Applicant Summary Resume Form. A candidate for nomination must mail

answers to the Personal Data Information Questionnaire and the Personal Confidential form to

the secretary and all commissioners postmarked no later than January 14, 2011. Additionally,

candidates shall provide the Secretary of the Commission a portable document format (pdf)

version of the Personal Data Questionnaire and any writing samples.

Candidates are given notice that the Commission will treat the responses to the Applicant

Summary Resume Form a public record. The information provided on this document will be

posted on the Iowa Judicial Branch website at the time the names of all applicants are released

for public comment. Additionally, the Commission will treat the responses to the Personal Data

Questionnaire as a public record available upon request for public examination. However, any

candidate who believes they cannot fully respond to a question without disclosing information

that is confidential under state or federal law, may submit that part of their answer with the legal

basis for confidentiality on a separate sheet marked confidential.

The Commission has determined that the responses to the Confidential Information Form

will or may disclose information that is confidential under state or federal law, and that

confidentiality will foster candid responses to certain areas of inquiry. In the event the responses

to the confidential application form are the subject of a public records request, you may be asked

in the future if you consent to the release of all or a portion of the information provided.

The Commission plans to meet the week of January 24, 2011, to interview applicants and

select a slate of nominees. The meeting schedule and location are yet to be determined. However,

in light of heightened public interest in judicial appointments, the Commission plans to open the

interview portion of the meeting to Iowans throughout the state by streaming the interviews on

the Internet.

Pursuant to the Internal Rules of the State Judicial Nominating Commission, copies of the

required forms and the Internal Rules of Procedure are included with this notice.
