Community is the soul of skiing and the heart behind our

brand. Skida got its start during a rainy holiday seven winters

ago when I picked up some fun fabric and began making hats

for my teammates and friends at Burke Mountain Academy.

Soon the demand for colorful hats grew, along with the variety

of prints. As the buzz snowballed beyond the New England ski

racing community, new products joined the line to keep everyone

warm and colorful. It took a lot of bootstrapping from the

start, but deliberate growth of the business through thoughtful

product design, careful print selection, and local production

has been our mission. So, when I discovered cashmere while

living in Nepal, I began my pursuit of the softest hats right at

the source. Our story doesn’t stop here: we’re Vermonters who

have an appreciation for our home and a notion for adventure.

An inkling to offer hats made of cashmere and to support a local industry that I came to know inspired me to book a ticket back to Nepal. In late August, I went straight to the source and revisited the best quality cashmere knitting and weaving facilities that I had interviewed three years ago. I traveled light with just my designs, a map of Kathmandu, and an old Minolta 35mm film camera to capture the authentic beauty and craftsmanship of the factories and its artisans who make these beautiful pieces. Enjoy!

IT ALL STARTED IN NEPAL Three years ago, I spent four months partaking in a research study program based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Fascinated by Nepal’s local cashmere industry, I spent my time studying its rise, fall, and slow revival. After weeks of interviews, factory visits, and product research, I discovered that Nepali Cashmere is a product of a complex and interconnected local industry with a long history of luxury and craft.
