HOW DID SLAVERY LEAD TO THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR?

L/O:1. Identify the different views

on slavery in the Americas before the Civil War.

2. Describe how the issue of Slavery contributed to the outbreak of the US Civil War.

WHY DID THE SLAVE TRADE LAST SO LONG?

People knew very little and were ignorant about Africa.

There were rumours and untruths (e.g. Africans were cannibals).

Africans were seen as a sub-species.

Too many people benefited from slavery.

Christian missionaries hoped to convert slaves.

WHEN DID SLAVERY EVENTUALLY END?

1807 - illegal for British traders to buy or sell humans.

BUT… Slaves continued to work on the plantations.

1833 - slavery completely abolished.

William Wilberforce, one of the strongest campaigners for the

abolition of slavery.

WHAT IS A A CIVIL WAR?

“A Civil War is…

…a war fought between people of the same country.”

Copy the definition above into your book.

TASKS:Arguments FOR slavery:

The Southern ViewArguments AGAINST Slavery:

The Northern View

• They have no right to tell us how to run our plantations.

• Slavery is cruel and should be abolished.

Use on your worksheet to complete the table.

Read each speech bubble and decide whether it is FOR slavery (the Southern view) or AGAINST slavery

(Northern view)…

Arguments FOR slavery:The Southern View

Arguments AGAINST Slavery:The Northern View

• They have no right to tell us how to run our plantations.

• Black Africans are inferior to whites and are born to be slaves

• Their factory workers live in worse conditions than our slaves.

• Slaves have to be punished. It is what they understand.

• Negro slaves have no worries. They have food, shelter and are not unemployed.

• Without slaves, the Southern economy would collapse.

• Slavery is cruel and should be abolished.

• All people should be equal.• Slaves have the right to

choose what they do with their lives.

• You cannot call yourself a good Christian if you keep slaves.

• You should pay your workers a wage.

HOW DID SLAVERY LEAD TO THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR?

L/O:1. Identify the different views

on slavery in the Americas before the Civil War.

2. Describe how the issue of Slavery contributed to the outbreak of the US Civil War.

3. Explain how these different views led to the US Civil War.

The Northern States:• Were against slavery;

• Believed the South should free their slaves.

The Southern States:• Used slaves to work on their plantations;

• Said they could not exist without slaves;

• Became angry at the North’s attitude.

TASK 2:• Using the work on your sheets to help you,

work with a partner to write a short speech as either:

– A Northerner who wants to ABOLISH slavery.

– A Southerner who is arguing that slavery is NECESSARY.

Do NOT simply copy the statements from your sheet; try to EXPLAIN your ideas fully!

CLASS VOTE: IN 1861, WHO WAS IN THE RIGHT?

NORTHERN VIEW:

SOUTHERN VIEW:

Good evening sirs, my name is… and I am from the state of New York. I am here today to tell you that I think we should get rid of slavery once and for all!I think this because…Another reason why slavery is terrible is because…To conclude I advise that…Thank you for listening, God Bless the United States of America

Good evening sirs, my name is… and I am from the state of Alabama. I am here today to tell you that I think we should make sure we don’t get rid of slavery!I think this because…Another reason why slavery is important to us is because…To conclude I advise that…Thank you for listening, God Bless the Confederate States of America

EXAMPLE NORTHERN VIEW:Good evening sirs, my name is Mr Clarke and I am from the state of Massachusetts.

I am here today to tell you that I think we should get rid of slavery once and for all! I think this because God created all people equal, and if you want someone to work for you, you should pay them a wage and treat them with respect.

Another reason why slavery is terrible is because it’s so cruel – these slaves are forced to work backbreaking hours and whipped if they slow down! You can’t be a good Christian if you keep men as slaves.

To conclude I advise that we end this awful practice and treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves. These Southern boys say that an end to slavery would be a disaster to their economy, but they can pay a man a wage and put their prices up to cover the difference!Thank you for listening, God Bless the United States of America!

ABRAHAM LINCOLN• In November 1860

Abraham Lincoln became President of the USA.

• He believed America should be united as one country (USA) and be against slavery.

• BUT… He did not believe in equality for blacks, just FREEDOM...

THINK…• In the United States in 1861 The northern

and southern states totally disagreed on the issue of slavery.

• There would not be a war on the issue, but something else happened to create a war…

• What might that have been?

THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA

• The Southern states disagreed with Lincoln and so:

– left the Union (United States);– Set up the

Confederate States of America.

The Confederate States of America

YEE-H

AW!

Breaking away from the UNION was known as SECESSION.The South had SECEDED from the Union of the states.

President Lincoln did not expect this split…

He had misjudged the strength of feeling in the South.

Lincoln tried to hold the Union together and did not know how many more states would leave…

APRIL 1861 - CIVIL WAR!• Black people wanted to fight but they were not

allowed - Lincoln thought this would push more states to join the Confederacy…

• The Emancipation* Proclamation - let Blacks fight in the Union army, however they were not treated equally - e.g. they were paid less, many did not have proper equipment/shoes/uniforms etc.

• Even in August 1862 President Lincoln was still hoping to salvage peace...

Emancipation = freedom

Emancipation Proclamation“all persons

held as slaves …shall be…forever

free”
