Course Schedule
A Little About Me
• I do research in visual perception & cognition (face recognition, navigation, ERP)
• See my web page for more infohttp://tinyurl.com/pertceptionlab
• Have taught Perception a few times before, so I should be getting the hang of it (?)
6
A Little About You
• What are you going to do with your life?
• What have you heard about this course?
• Why are you taking this course?
7
A Little About This Course
• Not what you may have heard (sections by Dr. Lamontagne take a different approach)
• Here, a biological/natural sciences approach is taken for the most part, with some philosophical asides now and again.
• Lots of material, but nothing too challenging
• Material at start is a little dry, but it gets better, so hang in there
8
A Little Advice• Come to class! I don’t just teach the textbook
material
• Do the labs! They are not optional, nor pass/fail.
• Sketch and label important diagrams
• Practice any mathematical procedure that I demonstrate in class
• Study as you go.
• Check your uottawa email address often
9
Textbook
• Chaudhuri, “Fundamentals of Sensory Perception”
• Available at both the UO bookstore and the Agora on Besserer.
10
Evaluation
• 7 Lab assignments!! 35% (7 x 5%)
• Midterm! ! ! ! ! 20%
• Final Exam! ! ! ! 45%
11
Lab Sessions
• Location: VNR 2025(may be “dep/dept” on web page)
• You need login and password. Same as for library: jsmit999 / YYMMDDSS
12
Lab Assignments
• 7 of the lab sessions will involve short-answer assignments, some starting from a computer-based demonstration, others involving homework
• Each assignment is due at the next lab session
• N.B.: Labs are not pass/fail, they will be marked in a graded fashion
13
Tests
• There will be a midterm and a final exam.
• Both of these consist of a mix of multiple choice, sketch & label, and math questions.
• Midterm will take place during lab period, around Week 7 (see schedule)
• Final exam will be during the final exam period. Final is cumulative.
14
Equipment for Labs
• The labs require miscellaneous bits of commonly-available equipment, including such things as a thermometer, ruler, drafting compass, etc.
• Partner (for a couple of the labs only)
15
Notes on Course Coverage
• Somewhat biased towards vision. Why?
• We can’t cover everything in depth, so only one area can be covered extensively.
• There is more research on vision
• Arguably the most important and complex sense in humans
• Vision is my field of expertise
