Mother’s Day, p. 51. U; There is not enough evidence. We are not

told whether or not he bought his sister abouquet.

2. T; 2; The bouquet James bought his motherhad roses, daisies, and greenery in it, andthus was a mixed bouquet.

3. F; picture; If James only buys one bouquet, then he spends $4.00 for the bouquet, but ifhe buys two bouquets for $6.98, then the costcomes out to $3.49 per bouquet.

4. T; 3; picture; Since the rose bouquet cost lessthan 10 dollars, James would be happy.

5. F; 1, 2; Sentence 1 tells us that James wentto the flower shop after he had finished all hisother shopping, and while a florist may sellgifts along with flowers, they do not sell papertowels and notebook paper. In addition, weare told in sentence 2 that at the flower shop,James bought a bouquet of flowers.

Math Class, p. 61. T; 4, picture, caption; Judy sits next to Tim on

his right in math class, and we know from the picture and caption that the boy with his hand raised is Tim, so the answer is true.

2. U; There is not enough evidence. Mr. Martin teaches math fifth period, but we do not know what he teaches the other periods of the day.

3. F; 3; Sometimes Judy helps Tim with his homework, but not always.

4. U; We know that Judy encouraged Tim to ask questions when Tim didn’t understand something in math class. Tim is raising his hand in the picture. The caption says that“Tim is confused in math class”, but we don’t know if Tim has decided to follow Judy’s advice, and we don’t know why Tim is raising his hand. Perhaps Tim is raising his hand to go to the bathroom.

5. U; There is not enough evidence. Tim could be asking a question, but he could also be answering a question.

Jenny’s Vacation, p. 71. F; 1, 2, 5; Jenny is Shirley’s neighbor, and

Shirley lives in North Dakota. The clue insentence 1 is that Shirley lives in the Dakotas.Sentence 2 gives us the clue that she livesnext to the Canadian border; North Dakota,

not South Dakota, borders Canada. The final clue is found in sentence 5 when Shirley wants to know how long it took Jenny to go from North Dakota to where Jenny is vacationing.

2. F; 1, 4; Shirley just received the photos, andshe will have to wait six months until Augustwhen she can go on vacation. This meansthat Shirley received the photos in February.

3. U; There is not enough evidence. Jennymay be on an island, but she may also beon the mainland; for example, she may bevacationing in San Diego, California or evenin Florida. Both places are warm, sunny, andhave beaches and palm trees.

4. T; 1, 2, 4; Sentence 1 tells us that Shirleylives in the Dakotas, and sentence 2 indicatesthat she lives next to the Canadian border, which means she lives in North Dakota.Sentence 2 also explains that Shirley isjealous because the weather in the photoslooks so warm, unlike the frigid weather sheis experiencing at home in North Dakota. This means that the weather right now inNorth Dakota is cold. In addition, sentence 4explains that she will have to wait six monthsuntil August when she can go on vacation, soit is February when she receives the photosfrom Jenny. North Dakota is not warm in thewinter in February.

5. U; There is not enough evidence. We do notknow if Jenny will be doing any other travelingwhile she is on vacation. While it is possible thatthe photo shows where she is spending all of hervacation since this is “her wonderful vacationgetaway,” we do not know this for certain.

Mr. Rodgers, p. 81. F; 2, picture; The clue is in the picture and

that clue is the computer. Mr. Rodgers isnot using a laptop, but a large stationarycomputer. It would be very cumbersomeand difficult for Mr. Rodgers to travel all overthe United States (sentence 2) with sucha computer. While Mr. Rodgers is probablyworking at home (given the pajamas and thecomputer), we do not know this for certain.

2. U; There is not enough evidence. Mr. Rodgersmay be sick, but it could also be that he likesto work in his pajamas when he works athome.

3. T; 2, 3; Given that Mr. Rodgers must visitclients all over the United States, that hehas a busy schedule, and that he works longhours, we can deduce that sometimes hetravels by plane.
