Inadoubleboilerovermediumheat,melt¼oftheglycerin.Removefromheat,add2dropsof lemonessentialoil and2-3dropsofoneof thecolorants.Pourintoabreadpanlinedwithparchmentpaper.Whilethesoapissetting,repeattheprocess with the next color. Continue repeating until you have four layers ofcolor.Whensoapiscompletelyset,removefrompan,peelawaytheparchmentpaper,andcutintostripedsoapbars.

Directions

Inadoubleboilerovermediumheat,melthalfoftheglycerinsoapbase.Add1tbsp aloe vera and remove from heat. Add 2-3 drops of the sweet orangeessentialoilandthecolorant,stirtomix,andpourintosoapmolds(fourbars).Whensoapisset,wraptwobarsforregularuse,andcuttheothertwobarsintosmallchunkswithaknife.Melt therestof theglycerinsoapbase,andaddtheremaining1 tbspaloevera.Removefromheat,andaddessentialoil.Fill soapmolds¼of theway,andletset.Onceit isset,placeafewof theorangesoapchunks on top, and fill the molds the rest of the way with the clear glycerinmixture.

MakeYourownSoap–HotProcess

Whenyoumakesoapusingthehotprocess,youarebasicallybringingthesoaptothetracestage,andthenheatingitforuptotwoyoursuntilithascompletelysaponified.Then,youcanthinitoutabitifitistoothickusingalcohol,andpourit intomolds.This is agoodprocess touse ifyouwant toadd fragrancesanddyes.Itwillnotcauseanychemicalreactionsthatchangescentsandcolors,anditwill not affect the color of herbs and process. This can often be a problemwhenyou areusing the coldprocess.The following are the stepsyouneed totakeinordertomakesoapusingthehotprocessmethod.

• SetUpaPot–Youwillneedtohavealargedoubleboilerformakingsoapwiththehotprocessmethod.Bringthewatertoaboilovermediumheat.

• MaketheSoap–Makeyoursoapasyouwouldwiththefirstfivestepsofthecoldprocess,andbringthesoaptothetracestage.Onceithasreachedthisstage,pourthemixtureintothedoubleboiler.

• CooktheSoap-Covertolockintheheatandmoisture,andletthemixture“cook”ataslowboilforabouttwohours.Youmayneedtoaddwatereverysooftentokeepthepotfromboilingdry.Oncethesoapbeginstotakeonatranslucentappearance,itisbeginningtoneutralize.Atthetwohourpoint,itshouldbeneutral,andyoucannowaddfragrances,essentialoils,etc.Ifthemixtureistoothick,itcanbethinneddownwithabitofalcohol.Vodkawilldothetrickaswell.

• PourintoMolds–Onceeverythingiswellmixed,itistimetopourthesoapmixtureintomolds.Oncefilled,tapthemoldsagainstthecounteracoupleoftimestogetridofanyairbubbles.

This mixture cools quickly. If it begins to harden before you have all of themoldsfilled,youcaneasilyre-meltitinthedoubleboiler.

This is theeasiestway tomakeyourownsoap,andyoucando it inunder20minutes. All you need to do is get some blocks of melt and pour soap base.Thereareavarietyoftypesyoucanuse,andallyouhavetodoismelttheminadoubleboiler(somerecipesalsocallforthemicrowaveoracrockpot),addanyextraingredientssuchasessentialoilsandcolorants,andthenpourthesoapintomolds.Theremaybeafoamylayerontop.Thisiseasytogetridofbysprayingalittlebitofalcoholon topof thesoapassoonas it ispoured.Itonly takesacoupleofhoursforthesoaptosetandbereadytouse,oryoucanputthemoldsintothefreezertosetthesoapinahalfanhourorso.

TypesofMeltandPourSoapBases

There are several different types ofmelt and pour soap bases, and each havetheirownspecialproperties.Theyarealleasytouse,althoughsomeworkbetterwithcertainadditivesthanotherbasesdo.Hereisarundownofthemostpopularsoapbasesyoucanuseforyoursoap-makingprojects.

• ClearGlycerin–Thisisagreatbasetousewhenyouarejustgettingstarted.Itisalsoidealforsoapsthathaveembeddeditems,becauseyouwillbeabletoseethem.Beawarethatheavieradditivesdotendtosinkinthisbase,andthelighteroneswillfloattothetop.Oneadditivethatworksparticularlywellwithclearglycerinissoapglitter,soyoucanmakesomefunsoapsforkids.Becarefulwithfragranceoils,astheycancloudtheglycerin.Itisbesttouseessentialoilsratherthanfragranceoils.

• OliveOilGlycerin–Thisisalsoaclearbase,butitdoeshaveabitofcloudinessthatissomewhatgreenishincolor.Thiscancauseproblemswithcertaincolorants,becauseitwillchangethecolor.Keepthisinmindtomakesureyougetthecolorsyouwant(useacolorwheeltoknowhowcolorsblend).Thisisasuspensionbase,soadditivesdon’ttendtofloatorsink.Becausethisbasecontainsoliveoil,itprovidesalotofnourishmentforyourskin.

• WhiteGlycerin–Anothernon-suspensionbase,additivescansinkorfloat.But,thisisgreatbaseforcoloredandcrayonsoaps,asitisopaque.Thisisbestusedforsolidcoloredsoapsratherthanmarbledsoaps,becauseofthefactthatadditivesfloat.Itisidealforherbalsoapswhereyouwanttheherbstobevisibleononesideofthesoapfordecoration.

• Goat’sMilkGlycerin–Hereisanopaquesuspensionbase,soyoucanhavethesolidcolorsormarbling.Additiveswon’tsinkorfloat,andyoucangetreallycreativewiththistypeofsoapbase.Itisalsoreallygoodforyourskin,becauseofthesmoothingpropertiesinthegoat’smilk.Itisperfectforherbaladditives,andyoucanuseanycolortogetatruecolorbecauseofthewhitebase.

• SheaButterGlycerin–Thisisonemoresuspensionbase,soyouradditiveswon’tfloatorsink.Itcontainsanti-agingproperties,andhelpstokeepyourskinsoftandsmooth.Sheabutterisevenknowntohelpreducetheappearanceofscars,stretchmarks,etc.,anditcanbeusedtosoothrashesandburns.

Springhasreallysprungnow.Thegrassisgreen,thetreesarefullofleaves,andflowers are beginning to bloom. This also means that fresh herbs are alsoblooming,andyoucanusealotofthemtocreateyourownsoaps.Thismonth,wehaverecipesthatusefreshanddriedherbsforfacialandhandsoaps,nottomention loads of other great recipes for household cleaners, shampoo, and awholelotmore.
