Social Concerns of the Late 1800’s

(Other than everything else we have already talked about – industrialization, segregation,

nativism & immigration, etc )

What seemed to be the value of treaties with the Native Americans?

Remember the Treaty of Gaudalupe Hidalgo? (ended the Mexican American War, included a provision that land rights of Mexicans in the area would be recognized by the US, but 4/5th lost their land)

Every hear of the Burlingame Treaty of 1868? (promised to guarantee government protection for Chinese immigrants)

In general – what impression do you have of 1800’s federal treaties?

Treaties

Since most of the Southwest lands were territories and not states, Mexican-Americans lacked representation in Washington, DC

Los Gorras Blancas – (the white caps/hats), resorted to more violent methods Movement supported by the Knights of Labor

Development of cultural groups to protect and promote Hispanic American culture

Mexican-Americans

1869 – Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton created National Women’s Suffrage Association

1906 – WY, UT, CO, ID – only states allowing women to vote
