Can You name these logos?

What is Social Networking?

*Technology Terms

Web browser is what you need to get online

Search engines are used to locate information or people on the internet

Social media is an online tool used to communicate information – it is a broader term than social networking

Social Networking is networking using ay online tool to communicate with people and get to know new people

*Technology Terms cont.Social Networking sites are where people go to meet each other on the internet.

Blogs are “web logs”, or online journals, where people write, display photos, and discuss a very specific topic

Microblogs are used to communicate small pieces of information, usually <140 words

Post is a phrase, picture, video, or other type of media that a person puts into a social networking site. A Status update is a type of post.

*What is an Online Profile?

• Online snapshots of the user’s life

• Professional or personal

• Multimedia: Words, Photos, Audio, and Video, hyperlinks

How do you want to present yourself to the world? Sunshine says, “Be Youself, Brand Yourself.”

Who is Social Networking?

• Jobseekers with experience in a unique field, or working with

rare machines or tools, should absolutely be online!• Recruiters, Hiring Managers, HR staffers go looking for

people with unique and specialized skills on the internet– They search social media

– They use Google, which pulls up Facebook & LinkedIn

Make Connections, Research Companies, Show up in a Google search, communicate your skills to your networks

*Netiquette• Spelling, abbreviations, acronyms, phrases are

NOT acceptable for professional communications

• NEVER TYPE IN ALL RED OR CAPS – THIS IS READ AS SHOUTING!

• Think of how other people will interpret your words…Use the KISS principle:

… Keep It Simple, Silly!

Cautions

• Inappropriate content on your own profile• Inappropriate content on others’ profiles• Content that you have deleted may come up in

Google for months or years to come• Difference between being personal

(sharing home address, Birthdate, SS #, private information) and personable

(sharing hobbies: “I like knitting”)

What if I Opt Out?

• HR folks interpret tech savvy

• Miss practical, useful connections

• 65% of HR managers Google job candidates… the people they know the most about get called first!

*“But I like to use Facebook for family and friends and Linkedin for professional connections… I like to keep them separate…”

This is not a good idea while you are job searching because you are cutting your networks in half!

Stay public and professional on Facebook until you are hired... then go back to being private if you want.
