SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY GROUP INFLUENCE

Objective

SWBAT define the five [5] subtopics of Group Influence and relate them to their own lives.

I know what were going to

do today…

Group Think

Harmonious but unrealistic group thinking (Janis, 1982)

A pattern of thought characterized by self-deception, forced manufacture of consent, and conformity to group values and ethics

Fed by overconfidence, conformity, self-justification and group polarization

Watergate Chernobyl Challenger explosion Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor WMD in Iraq

Social Loafing Diminishing effort when in a group setting

PRO & CONS to working in a group…

Get to be with friends

Bounce ideas of each other

Get more done faster

Have to rely on others Some students don’t do any work

Have you ever worked with someone in a group that did not

help? Put that person in your mind as your visual memory for social loafing…

That semantic encoding feels nice….

Imagine you are invisible for 24 hours.

What would you do?

Write your answer on a scrap of paper

Deindividuation To be less self-conscious and less restrained when in a group situation

It can also diminish the feelings of responsibility

Group Polarization

When people are placed into a group and these people have to deal with some situation, the group as a whole typically has some overriding attitude toward the situation. Over time and with group discussion, the group's attitude toward that situation may change. When it changes in such a way that the group attitude is enhanced and strengthened, then group polarization has occurred

For Example Say group of Republicans gather to discuss welfare reform and some new policy proposed by a democratic politician. The welfare policy calls for more money to be taken from private sector businesses and given to welfare centers. In the beginning of the discussion, the group as a whole may be somewhat against the welfare reform policy (thus having an initial group attitude). After discussing the policy, the group indicates that they are now more against the policy than ever. What has happened is that the initial attitude has been bolstered and the group is more polarized against the policy.
