B. Theories 1. Functionalist- a. must have different social classes to do all jobs b. want best people to do best jobs so we set up unequal rewards: . C.therefore poor people are either lazy or uneducated and it is their problem d.theory doesn’t address different life chances: equal education, opportunity and support

2.Conflict Theory a. poverty due to competition for scarce resources b. rich use poor to get ahead, so not your fault you are poor c. problem is it doesn’t explain differences in skills, work ethic and interests: not everyone suited for all jobs

3.Structural theory a. people born poor have less life chances and will stay poor- no car to get to interview, low income so few good jobs in area, no big cheap stores in neighborhood so pay higher prices, time at learn poor decision making process- live for the right nowb. creates culture of poverty: generation after generation poor as poverty becomes a learned behaviorc.
