Electrolytic Cell

SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE PRODUCTION ‘In situ’ Sodium Hypochlorite Production Technology KERN S&D has an innovative technology for the production ‘in situ’ of sodium hypochlorite (5% to 15% of active chorine) which consists of a new bipolar membrane electrolyzer (mercury-free). Sodium hypochlorite production plants designed and developed by KERN S&D are safe, environmentally neutral and highly competitive because of their low investment required and low operational costs (high electrical efficiency and high level of automation). KERN S&D technology complies with EU Directives on Best Technologies Available (BAT) for the production of chlor-alkali (Directive 2010/75/UE).

Operating Fundamentals of the Sodium Hypochlorite Production Technology

The most cost-effective production of sodium hypochlorite is obtained from the electrolysis of brine, process in which common salt, electricity and water are used as raw materials. The electrolytic cell is a bipolar cell with a cathode (-), anode (+) and a cationic membrane. It is fed with brine (salt water) and an electric current is passed through it generating chlorine and caustic soda, which react immediately to form high quality and high concentration sodium hypochlorite.
