Solvangs definition of green shipping
• Green shipping is constantly evolving greener, due to more efficient hulls, lower speed on main engines, higher fuel-efficiency, heat recovery, propeller technology, anti-fouling, improved operations procedures and a series of other innovations that our engineers continuously seek out. Vessels performance monitoring, is a critical tool when assessing the efficiency of our innovations.
Fuel problem ???
Off coerce not• Environmental foot print are given from interaction between
fuel and engine technology
• Engine type / working principle (diesel/otto/dual fuel)• Operation and load profile • Maintenance (Very important)• After treatment of exhaust and/or other discharges.
Green vessel operation• Green design ~ fuel efficient design
• Engine technology, typ of fuel, exhaust after threatment• Fuel efficient auxilary equipment. • Hull lines• Cargo capacity• +++++++++
• Best praxcis operation• Maintenance of equipment• Running of equipment• Optimal trim• Route planning• Planning of Cargo/ballast operations.• ++++++++
• How do we know the vessel performance ?
Vessel Performance monitoring since 2008 (in-house system)

Exhaust gas cleaning

Sea water FGD ==Sea water Scrubber
How does the scrubber work?
Exhaust gas cleaning an important tool to make shipping greener
• Important to see the difference• Open loop
• Open loop with water cleaning
• Hybrid
• Closed loop
Chemical Reaction
Scrubber Reactions for SOx:
SOx reacts with the seawater in the scrubber and forms Sulphuric Acid.
It further utilizes the natural alkalinity in the seawater as follows:
CaCO3 (Calcium Carbonate) + H2SO3 (Sulphuric Acid) → CaSO3 + H2O + CO2
2CaSO3 + O2→ 2CaSO4 (Calcium Sulphate)
Calcium Sulphate already exists in seawater at a ratio of 2700 ppm
Compounds like bicarbonates (HCO3-) and carbonates (CO3
2-) neutralise acidic compounds and help to buffer the pH.
Alkalinity, not salinity is the measure of the buffer capacity of a solution.

Propulsion efficiency
• Mewis duct• The Mewis duct harmonise and stabilise the flow distribution by generating a pre-swirl in
front of propeller which again reduce the rotational losses in the propeller system.
• Fuel savings 3,5-6 % 1,4-2,8 tons pr day.

• Two main techniques available on marked• HP-EGR
• Use caustic soda
• SCR use urea• HP (HFO)
• LP (MGO)
• Both techniques add operational costs and GHG emissions.
