Stereo vs. Mono• Traditional square/round dance equipment only used mono outputs

and primarily mono inputs (microphone). Later sets could mix stereoinputs into a mono output. They could also record mono music onone track and mono voice onto another track of a stereo recording.

• Laptops, CD Devices, MiniDisc Devices, and other sources of musicnot only play stereo output but can also make stereo recordings.

• It is common in round dancing to record music on the left trackand voice cues on the right track of a stereo recording.

• Some music recorded in stereo will sound distorted if you play onlyone side of it.

• Stereo output (i.e. left side to left speaker and right side to rightspeaker) is not generally used in square/round dancing whereuniform sound is desired in the whole hall. Stereo output is used bybands to hear one instrument on one side, another on the other sideand perhaps the singer just to one side of center.

• Mono output can mix left & right into the main speaker(s) and alsointo the monitor speaker(s).
