EARLY LIFE

Born in Thrace(present day Bulgaria), in the year on 109 B.C.E he

was a Thracian.

Served in the Roman Army as an auxiliary

History is not clear on how he became a slave but some researches

say he deserted the army the was later sold as a slave

Went to Capua a gladiator school

LIFE AS A GLADIATOR

Was a well trained gladiator from his time in the army

In 72 B.C.E Spartacus was among a group of gladiators planning on escaping

Once they were free they choose Spartacus as on of two leaders

Other leaders we Crixus and Oenomaus

THE SLAVES REVOLT

In 72 B.C.E, Spartacus took his legion of slaves estimated at 100,000 men and defeated a series of Roman attacks

Using tactics he learned in the army and guerrilla warfare.

Spartacus marched towards Gaul after defeating Roman forces went south by the end of 72 B.C.E

THE BEGINN IN G O F THE THIRD SERVIL E WAR

Spartacus’ army swelled to about 120,000 men

Rome started viewing this as a threat.

Roman politician and general Marcus Licinius Crassus was sent with an army of 40,000-50,000 south to stop this revolt.

The first attack was a major failure due to the eagerness of Crassus

THIRD SERVILE WAR CONT.

This defeat cause many Roman soldiers to flee thus causing Crassus to “discipline” his men by having the brutally beaten.

Crassus then moved his entire army against Spartacus’ forces, wiped out 10,000 rebels and moved against Spartacus

THE FALL OF SPARTACUS

As soon as the first 10,000 men fell Spartacus and the rest of his men retreated to Rhegium

In the battle the Roman legion dominated the slaves

Research said Spartacus was likely wounded or killed in battle

The remaining captured slaves 6,000 to be exact were then crucified along the road from Capua(where the revolt began)to Rome as punishment.

LEGACY

Spartacus wanted to change the corrupt Roman society and end

the Roman institution of slavery.

No specific goals were ever recovered in history but it indeed

proved a power of one mans persuasion to build an army of slaves
