15 credit Module

3 week duration (weeks 2-4)

Examined in week 6

Designed to give students ability to use physiotherapy terminology to describe and analyse movement, prescribe basic exercises

To develop an understanding of neuromusculoskeletal structure and function, in order to analyse normal movement as a foundation for physiotherapy practice.

Successful students will have a knowledge and understanding of:› Muscle physiology and how it relates to

movement› The principles of joint structure and

function› The principles of biomechanics› The principles of motor learning› The principles of exercise prescription

Successful students will be able to:› Begin to analyse posture and movement› Apply principles of motor learning to

exercise prescription› Use professional terminology to describe

normal movement

Anatomy Terminology – learn

a new language.› Universal› Latin & Greek based

Explore different types of bones, joints and tissues› Structure

Contractileand non contractile elements.

› Function

Applied physics› Aids analysis of

posture, movement and performance.

› Understand the forces being placed through joints and tissues.

› Used in research, aid performance and to develop rehabilitation

strategies.

Motor Learning and Planning

Nervous system Explore how movement is

planned, executed, refined and learned.

Exercise Prescription Helps us to be able to teach

exercises and re-educate movement.

Develop fitness programmes.

Develop rehabilitation programmes using adapted principles of training.
