‘Moroni�’ is the latest proje�t �rom �ollaborative duo Daniel Evans & Brendan Baker. The series explores and exploits both the �ragilit� and �lexibilit� of language by illustrating a number of linguisti� paradoxes �ound within news media sear�h engines. B� using a variet� of stillli�e and per�ormative methods, Baker & Evans have �reated a set of photographi� �uriosities that perplex and intrigue the viewer.

The role of language and our pro�esses o� understanding it are �entri� to the work, taking �ues �rom various aspe�ts o� semioti� theor�. The ox�moroni� statements that the images are derived �rom �reate a void where no meaning is �on�rete, subsequentl� leaving spa�e �or the mind to �abri�ate all manner of possibilities. Baker & Evans have manipulated this weak spot, highlighting the �allibilit� o� language and its relationship with the photographi� image.

In man� instan�es the visual translation is entirel� literal, su�h as the photograph titled ‘Egg Plant’, which shows a household plant with eggs sprouting �rom its bran�hes. In other �ases, the meaning requires a more a�tive sear�h �rom the viewer, underlining the �onvoluted nature o� language and its instabilit� as a form o� de�initive �ommuni�ation.

Kremsmünster, Austria, August �I love being at home in summer.

Our garden is prote�ted �rom all sides with hight trees, ever�bod� swims and runs around naked. It is one of these da�s, I �aptured my parents, during one o� this ver� �amilial, spe�ial moments.

I am ver� lu�k� to have them allow me intruding so �ar into their li�e. What I get are pi�tures that show a natural intima�� that I so �ar never a�hieved with people that I knew less, with models or in an� staged situation. M� mother, who is used to m� �amera, is alwa�s willing to pla� the game a little, make some nonsense, taking m� dads shoes, but never posing or thinking about how she should appear, never �hanging reall� �rom the person who is just taking a swim, to a naked women putting on a dress.
