WelcomeDear Readers:
This week, the Springfield Connection turns over its pages to theyouth and students of its communities.
We asked principals and teachers from local schools to encouragestudents to contribute their words, pictures and photos for our annualChildren’s Issue.
The response this year was tremendous. As a result, we were able topublish only a fraction of the submitted stories, poems, drawings, paint-ings, photographs and other works of art in this issue.
We will publish additional student writings and artwork on specialpages periodically throughout the new year. We appreciate the extraeffort made by school staff to gather the materials during their busytime leading up to the holidays.
The Children’s Issue is only part of our year-round commitment tocover education and our local schools. As always, The Connection wel-comes letters to the editor, story ideas, calendar listings and notices oflocal events from our readers. Photos and other submissions about spe-cial events at schools are especially welcome.

My Friend TurkeyBy Santiago Morant
Grade 2, Hunt Valley Elementary
I want a turkey friend . . . and maybe theturkey wants a friend too. One day a redand brown turkey knocked on my door. Theturkey said, “Will you be my friend?”
“Yeah, sure! Let’s play!”The next day everyone laughed and they
said you can’t have a turkey friend. Maybehe will bite on your pants. Ha, ha! I criedbecause they were mean. Well, if you havea pet turkey he will bite on your arm! Ha!
Ha! Ha! I went back home crying. Momsaid, “Why are you crying?”
“Because everybody said I can’t have aturkey friend.”
Another day my turkey friend and Iplayed tag. We ate popsicles and popcorn.Later I called my turkey friend. “Hey, doyou want to come and have a sleepover?”
“Sure, but first I have to pack up, OK?”My other friends knocked on my door.
They said, “We are really sorry. Do you for-give us?”
“Yes, do you want to have a sleepover atmy house with my turkey friend?”
Now we are all friends.

By Zack Dutke
Grade 2, Hunt Valley Elementary
A turkey does not make a good pet be-cause it would be a total waste of money. The feathers would be everywhere. And thenight would be noisy. And we’re not allowedto have a turkey in Springfield. Wherewould you keep it? Plus you would have tolive on a farm to have one.Mrs. Miner

An October’s NightBy Samantha S.
Grade 11, Phillips School
I sit on the bench, facing the little lake by myhouse, it is so beautiful. It is a perfect mirrorof the building next to it. The lights reflect offit and I get the feeling of a Christmas tree, but
the lights are shimmering slightly on the water, al-most hypnotically. I can feel the breeze on my faceon my arm, I focus on it, and it feels so nice.
Summer has just ended and the cool weather is awelcome relief. It is a nice winter’s breeze, cool tothe touch, the air smells like rain and I can’t help butsmile, I love rain but more then that I love the smellof it in the air, to me at least, it smells like a promise,a promise of new life a promise for a future I know itsounds silly but there it is.
I listen to hear the sound of crickets chirping andbugs buzzing and it sounds peaceful to me, comfort-ing, like the tick tock of an old clock when you haveno were to be or the soft purring of a cat asleep atyour side, it sounds like home. I look around in awe
at the beauty of the trees dancing in the breeze andlisten to the sound of the critters that sound so happyand free in there simplicity. It makes me want to sing,to be a part of the beauty but I dare not speak forfear of shattering the magic that surrounds this night,I dare not break the spell.
So I sit and listen and watch and love. I sit theretill I see the sun break the horizon I had thoughtthere was nothing more beautiful then that night, but I was wrong, to see the sun break the horizonand paint the sky in its amazing light so full of color, orange, red, pink, yellow and a light blue that is sosoft I could cry, the sky is so beautiful that it seemsto be shouting at the earth.
The wind blow’s harder and the trees dance andthe leaves on the tree explode with light and the redand orange glow make it seem as if the tree were onfire shouting back at the sky. I laugh to myself “It is aflight of beauty” I can’t remember where I heard thatbut I quite like it and think that it fits perfectly inthis moment, I hope that this moment never has toend.

Letters to VeteransDear any Veteran who might read this,
I would like to thank you for all that youhave been through just to protect us. Iwould also like to thank my dad, who is inthe Air Force. He’s a lawyer and I know thathe does his job in the Air Force to protectme, his family, and all the other citizens ofAmerica. I would like to give thanks to allthe other veterans who are deployed to chal-lenging places like Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan, risking their lives to pro-tect America. I would also like to thank thepeople in Arlington Cemetery; thank youfor risking your lives to protect the greatU.S. of A.
Sincerely,Patrick Gentry

A veteran is someone who served orserves in the United States military. Theword veteran means to me “very importantperson,” someone who put his/her life atrisk to save others. I know four veterans:my great uncles, and my mom and dad. They are important to me because they areall in my family. Veterans are important tome because they have served my nation andmade it possible for me to be here right now.I’m Justin Dahl and I am proud to be anAmerican.
Justin DahlGrade 4, Sangster Elementary
A veteran is a person who served in theArmy, Navy, Marines, Air Force, or CoastGuard. I think veterans are very important.Without them we would never have wonwars. Veterans are a part of our great na-tion. I also think we should give our big-gest gratitude to all veterans. They put theirlives on the line for people they don’t evenknow. They also should get more respectfrom all of us. With that, I hope you knowwhat veterans are.
Brian LornGrade 4, Sangster Elementary
Veteran’s Day means so much to me be-cause without veterans we wouldn’t be freeand we would be following different rules.
Veterans also mean a lot to me because theyare fighting for freedom and risking theirlives for us.
Maria EuripidesGrade 4, Sangster Elementary
I think that veterans made big sacrificesto us to let us be free. My dad is a veteran,so they mean a lot to me. Some even gaveup their lives to let us live. I feel bad for theveterans that died and never saw thechange. I really honor veterans. I can’t tellyou how much they mean to me!!!
Fergus BurnsGrade 4, Sangster Elementary
I think Veteran’s Day is a very importantholiday because people in the military orretired from the military are honored forwhat they have done to protect our coun-try. My dad is retired from the Air Force. He served for 21 years. I recently moved toVirginia because my dad retired from theAir Force. I think it is really cool to have aveteran in my family. Happy Veteran’s Day!
Simone TottenGrade 4, Sangster Elementary
Happy Veteran’s Day. I think veterans areimportant because they fight for us so wedon’t have to, even though they fight anddie. They are important because they fight. My father is in the military. He’s my father, but I think he is important because I knowhe’s been trained and he wants to make adifference in the world.
Morgan YortonGrade 4, Sangster Elementary
I respect veterans for fighting for mycountry. I respect veterans for going to warsand protecting our country. I’m proud of theUnited States because it protected its citi-zens. I think veterans are important becausethey sacrifice themselves to help in wars. Alot of people respect veterans from WorldWar I and World War II. I think that veter-ans are the most important defenders in theworld. I think veterans are great.

Veterans, you have always been there forme and the United States of America, sowe have a day for you. I think it should bea month. I have four people that I know inmy family who were in the Army and theAir Force. One died in war. The bravery youshow is amazing. There are two wars goingon and you’re still fighting. You’re my hero!
Greg McIntyreGrade 4, Sangster Elementary
Veteran’s Day is all about the soldiers orpeople who served. Veteran’s Day startedafter World War I and it started as Armi-stice Day. At exactly 11:11 a.m. we stayquiet until 11:12 a.m.
How many veterans do you know? Do youhave a parent that is a veteran? Veteransfight for our country and fight in wars andsome even die. Veteran’s Day is a very im-portant day. All veterans fight hard for ourcountry.
Brison EdomGrade 4, Sangster Elementary

The next day I sat next to her at lunch. Thenw talked about trading silly bandz. Then the dayended, so we all went home. That is the story of meand Nia.

Winter BreakBy Fabian Ariscain
Grade 6, Rolling Valley Elementary
My winter break was a blast. I played with a friend,we had a snowball fight and my team won. I built asnowball fort. Because it made a hole they didn’tfind me. I scare them, they jumped and looked be-hind them and then smiled. We then started sled-ding down hills and I sledded down a big hill and itwas really fast and fun. We went to a slide that Imade and everyone said it was awesome. Then wewent inside our houses and stayed inside and hadhot cocoa.

I went to my cousins house for Christmas. Mybaby cousin was jumping because he wanted to openhis gifts. It was time to open gifts and he was sohappy when he got a lot of toys. We left and wentto our friends house for a party. When we got therewe played with my little cousin and another littleboy. We played hide-in-seek and tag and othergames. We got to have balloons and we hit eachother with them for fun. We then went outside andlet all the balloons go, it looked like fireworks be-cause the balloons were different colors. We sawthe green, red, white and blue balloons go up inthe air. It was awesome. We came back inside fordinner. After dinner was over we went and playedsome more and then we left to go home. Once wegot home we had a big pillow fight.

Who’s in Charge?By Millena Yohannes
Rolling Valley Elemenary
We are!All the time, us kids say, “When I’m in
charge, I’ll do this for the world,” Who saidwe weren’t in charge? Who said we hadto be in charge to help our world? I forone, think small things make huge differ-ences.
At school, we should try to reuse as muchas possible. Recycling could be more en-forced. I know it can!
Helping our environment should be aneasy job everyone wants to do. Everyonesays, “It’s to hard,” what’s so hard? Recy-cling? Reusing? What’s so hard about put-ting a water bottle in a blue and green bin?You all have one, so USE it!!!!
Also, instead of using bottled water, usereusable water bottles. Believe it or not, reusing is MUCH better than recycling.
We should stop wasting water! Here aresome foolproof ways of conserving water:HANDWASH your dishes! Dishwashers arefor lazy people (not really)! Use your hoseonly in emergencies! Collect rainwater in abucket and use it to water your plants.
And now, I will give you the spiel every-one gives you. Turn off unneeded lights!Hence, small things make big differences.
Back to reusing. When you go to the gro-cery store, take along old plastic bags youhave or old tote bags to conserve plastic.
Why throw away things you don’t want/need anymore? Donate them to charity! Notonly are you helping the environment, butit’s helping kids (and adults) in need.
Now to the expected … Electricity! Turnit off when you’re done! If there is still ared light on, it’s still using electricity.
Turning up the heat wastes money, whichwastes trees (and oxygen), which wastespaper, therefore, it’s bad for the environ-ment! (you probably knew it was bad at thetree part)
You know what I would change at home?I will admit, my family doesn’t do as muchrecycling as I would like. Therefore, thethree R’s need to be enforced at my house. We could get recycling bins in some roomsat my house as a reminder.
I would also try to join in on environmentclean ups, like at ponds, lakes, and beaches.
Not only will it help the environment, butalso animal habitats. On the upside, I knowthat local nature centers have lots of pondclean ups.
Now something I haven’t talked about …reducing! (I don’t know much about it, butit rhymes with the other R’s) I know I canby trying to reduce the amount of plasticbags you use every time you go shoppingand try to decrease the amount ( unless youreuse them-that’s a different story.) then, the “always conserve paper!”
Here’s a fun fact: sea animals mistake alot for food. Especially sea turtles. So whenyou get a helium balloon, DON’T LET GOOF A HELIUM BALLOON OUTSIDE! Whenthe is all out of air, it will land in the waterand sea turtles and all other marine lifemight mistake it for food and eat it.
Speaking of beaches, help clean themwhen you go to there, I know that you seelots of trash. Why not be generous andthrow it away, or, at the very least, get itaway from the water! The beach will thankyou; for that piece of trash could have beenfound in Paris.
Oh, how could I forget? How we can pre-vent pollution, of course! Well, the earthwill be pretty thankful for that! But, we canall prevent it. There are some ways even inthe other paragraphs, too. There’s the, don’tlitter! and the, no smoking! If we all didthat, we could save the world one step at atime with everyone in unison.
