RAF Logistics (Air) ReportingThe Actuate story so far

RAF Logistics (Air) Reporting - Scope

• RAF Logistics - what we do• How we got Actuate• Data Sources, Product areas & examples• Reporting Service Changes and Benefits• What Next

RAF Logistics - What we do

Logistics (Air) = Engineering and Supply activities for aircraft

• Air Command - operate aircraft– Daily Servicing (eg. fuel & stores)– Repairs (limited capability)– Scheduled Maintenance (not deep maintenance)

• DE&S – Integrated Project Teams - support to Air Command

• Manage support activities• Manage range of spares• Develop modification programmes with Design Authority• Manage Industry contracts for repair & maintenance

RAF Logistics - What we do

• DE&S (contd.) – Specialist Areas - examples:

• Inventory Optimisation• Reliability Centred Maintenance

• Industry (RR, BAe, MAe, LM, Boeing, etc.)– Design Authority and/or overhaul/repairing– Contracting - traditional, ILS, availability & capability – Reporting & data exchanges

RAF Logistics - What we do

Management Information Reporting Services

• Customers - IPT, Commands/MOBs & Industry• The Reporting Team

– 10 Actuate qualified– Functions:

• Scrutinise Requirements• Develop & Test• Customer Walkthrough• Release (& manage) Service

• Quality Management System - ISO 9001:2000 approved• ITIL - IT Service Management

How we got Actuate

Upon introduction of Typhoon aircraft• Needed a reporting system that would:

– Comply with MOD Architecture and be run over the MOD RLI– Connect to multiple database sources of differing standards– Output in multiple graphical formats– Would minimise development resources– Provide Web Reports that could be manipulated by Customers

E&AM Subjects (LITS)

Aircraft Controllers Report on LMU, by aircraft

Report Parameters input by customer

Flight Line- live data source

For airworthy reports - include data date-time-stamps

Plan Aircraft Maintenance / View existing extensions

MOB/IPT Report - latest/recent data

Reporting Services - Before Actuate

• What we were doing:

– LITS data no web-based reporting• Eureka - from Computer Associates• Smart Server scheduling• Reports accessed via menus from within application• Created Access DB services • Data Mart Service (using DEX - product QinetiQ licensed from

ClearPace)– MDS

• SQL data extractions to customer

Reporting Services - With Actuate

• What we now do:

– Web-based reporting (visibility - helps diagnose problems)– Deliver E&AM and MF reports via Air Command portal

• Mix of live, operational and back-office data stores • Reports available to deployed operational sites (eg. IRAQ )• Multi data source reports• Typhoon Reporting

– Introduced New Services

• MJDI, CSA & AwIS reporting

Reporting Services - Actuate Benefits

• Need less reports (use generic - less maintenance & resources)• Visibility of how customers use the reports• Combine data from multiple sources• Add Graphical presentation of data• No more need for macros to be run against report extracts • Ability to do pixel-perfect layouts• Ability to do the difficult jobs due to highly configurable tool• Easier metadata management for developers (knowledge base &

data table linking)

Reporting Services - Next steps

• Future Actuate work– Convert remaining LITS reports– Introduce Actuate Query

• When LITS report conversion completed:– Revisit & make greater use of graphical presentation– Provide customer with more ability to set trigger levels

• Support BI CC formation– Additional data sources? (eg. MDS data in EDW)– Additional reporting requirements?

• Prepare for SOA?
