Day 1 Saturday 21st February
The group met at the Airport and boarded the flight to Sri Lanka for their 16 day Wildlife & History tour.
Day 2 Sunday 22nd February
The group arrived at 1.30 pm and we left the Airport at 2.15 pm. We proceeded straight to Anawilundawa
wetland, which is a RAMSAR protected area. The afternoon was a little windy and humid. We encountered
Lesser Whistling Duck, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Painted Stork, Asian Openbill, Black-headed Ibis, Glossy Ibis,
Black-crowned Night Heron, Indian Pond Heron, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Cattle Egret, Great Egret,
Intermediate Egret, Spot-billed Pelican, Little Grebe, Little Cormorant, Darter, Black-winged Kite, Brahminy
Kite, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Shikra, Crested Serpent Eagle, Purple Swamphen, Common Moorhen, Common
Coot, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Black-winged Stilt, Red-wattled lapwing, Whiskered Tern, Common Pigeon, Rock
Pigeon, Spotted Dove, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Asian Palm Swift, House Swift, Little Swift, Indian Roller, Blue-
tailed Bee-eater, White-throated Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, Brown-headed Barbet, White-naped Woodpecker,
Black-hooded Oriole, House Crow, Large-billed Crow, Barn Swallow, Red-vented Bulbul, Asian Paradise-
flycatcher, Common Myna, Purple Sunbird, Loten's Sunbird and Long-billed Sunbird. We also encountered
Toque Macaque, Indian Palm Squirrel, Grizzled Giant Squirrel and Indian Flying Fox. After the Anawilundawa
site we proceeded to Anuradhapura, stopping en-route at the Tabbowa Tank. We reached the hotel at 7.30 pm
and, after the checklist, we had dinner and went to bed.
Day 3 Monday 23rd February
At 6.15am, we went for some pre-breakfast birding around the hotel. We encountered Indian Peafowl, Indian
Cormorant, Great Cormorant, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Crested Goshawk, Oriental Honey-buzzard, Black Eagle

and Spotted Deer. We got back to the hotel for breakfast at 7.30 am, and then proceeded to the Anuradhapura
ancient city.
The UNESCO world heritage site of Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka. We visited the Sri Maha
Bodhi tree, the great stupa of Ruvanveli, and Jethavana, the tallest brick structure of the ancient world, and
surrounding monastery complex. We saw many more stupa moonstones, guard stones, and many other man-
made wonders of a bygone civilization. We also visited the Abhayagiri complex, where we found another
colossal stupa and many Buddha statues, followed by the impressive Kuttam Pokuna or twin pond. We returned
to the hotel for lunch at 12.45pm.
At 3.30pm we went to the Mahakanagarawo Tank for some birding, and encountered White-breasted Waterhen,
Green Imperial Pigeon, Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, Blue-faced Malkoha, Greater Coucal, Crested Treeswift ,
Grey-rumped Treeswift, Green Bee-eater, Coppersmith Barbet, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Sri Lanka Woodshrike,
Large Cuckooshrike, Common Iora, Sri Lanka Swallow, Ashy Woodswallow, Black Drongo, White-bellied
Drongo, Grey Wagtail, Richard's Pipit, Paddyfield Pipit, Blyth's Pipit, Jerdon's Bushlark, Oriental Skylark, White-
browed Bulbul, Plain Prinia, Common Tailorbird, Yellow-billed Babbler, Oriental Magpie-Robin, Purple-rumped
Sunbird, and Scaly-breasted Munia and a Grey Langur. We also visited the Mihinthale sanctuary and returned to
the hotel at 6pm.
We did our checklist for the day at 7.30pm, and had dinner after the briefing for the next day’s programme.
Day 4 Tuesday 24th February
At 6.15am, we went to Nuwara Wewa Lake for birding, and we encountered Brown Shrike, Jerdon's Leafbird,
Zitting Cisticola, Booted Warbler, Sykes's Warbler, Dark-fronted Babbler, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Tickell's Blue
Flycatcher, Thick-billed Flowerpecker, Pale-billed Flowerpecker and Oriental White-eye. We returned to the
hotel at 7.30am for breakfast.
At 8.30am, we checked out of the hotel and proceeded to Sigiriya. We observed many ancient man-made lakes
en-route to Sigiriya. At 12.45 pm, we checked in to the hotel at Sigiriya and had our lunch. It started raining in
the afternoon, but we still went out for our climb to the Sigiriya rock and some birding, and we saw Barred
Buttonquail, Woolly-necked Stork, Little Egret, Long-legged Buzzard, Indian Thick-knee, Yellow-wattled
Lapwing, Kentish Plover, Common Sandpiper, Common Kingfisher, Crimson-fronted Barbet, Lesser
Goldenback, Small Minivet and Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike
The rains came down very heavily in the evening, as we headed back to the hotel. We returned to the hotel at
6.30 pm and did our checklist for the day at 7.30pm, and had dinner after the briefing for the next day’s
programme.
Day 5 Wednesday 25th February
We started the day at 6.15am, to do some birding around the hotel area. The sky was gloomy with rain clouds,
but we managed to see Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Peregrine Falcon, Booted Eagle and Stork-billed Kingfisher. We
returned to the hotel and, after breakfast, we left for the Pollonnaruwa ancient site. A few members of the group

stayed back to enjoy the hotel facilities. We visited the Parakrama Samudra or Parakrama Ocean, which was built
by King Parakramabahu during the Golden age of Lanka. We returned to the hotel at 12.45 for lunch, and set
out at 4pm for some sightseeing around Sigiriya. The rains started again in the evening, and lasted till we came
back to the hotel at 6pm. In our evening birding session we saw Malabar Pied Hornbill, White-browed Fantail,
Orange-headed Thrush, White-rumped Shama and Indian Robin. We had dinner after the briefing for the next
day’s programme.
Day 6 Thursday 26th February
At 6am, we had another pre-breakfast birding session, and we saw the Sri Lanka Green Pigeon, Chestnut-backed
Owlet, Indian Pitta, Sand Martin, Black-capped Bulbul and Yellow-browed Bulbul. We checked out of the hotel
at 8.30am, and proceeded to our next hotel in Kandy. En-route, we visited the Dambulla Rock Temple, and
stopped at 1pm for lunch at a Spice Garden. After lunch, we did a little birding in the area, and then proceeded
to Kandy. We checked in to the hotel at 5.30pm and did our checklist for the day at 7.45pm, and had dinner
after the briefing for the next day’s programme.
Day 7 Friday 27th February
After an early breakfast, we proceeded to Udawatta Forest Reserve, to see the wet zone birds. We saw Layard's
Parakeet, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Crimson-backed Goldenback, Scarlet Minivet, Lesser Hill Myna, Brown-
breasted Flycatcher, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Great Tit, House Sparrow and White-rumped Munia. After
visiting the forest, we went to the Temple of the Tooth, which hosts the tooth of Lord Buddha and is a sacred
site for all Buddhists around the world. We returned to the hotel at 12.30pm for lunch, and relaxed until 2.30pm.
We then left for the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, which were once the pleasure gardens of the
Kandian Kings. Due to heavy traffic, we couldn’t make it to the cultural show, but went directly to the hotel.
After reaching our hotel, we did our checklist for the day at 7.30pm, and had dinner after the briefing for the
next day’s programme.
Day 8 Saturday 28th February
Today we started the day at 6am, and visited the Hantana Forest Reserve for some birding. We returned to the
hotel at 7.30am and, after breakfast, we left for Nuwara Eliya, en-route visiting a tea factory where we observed
the process of making tea. We checked in to our hotel at 12.50pm and, after lunch, we visited the local markets
in the city. At 4.15pm, we visited the Victoria Park, where we encountered Indian Swiftlet, Alpine Swift, Hill
Swallow, Forest Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Yellow-eared Bulbul, Grey-breasted Prinia, Pied Thrush, Pied Bushchat,
Kashmir Flycatcher and Sri Lanka White-eye.
We returned to the hotel at 6pm, and did our checklist for the day at 7.30pm, and had dinner after the briefing
for the next day’s programme.
Day 9 Sunday 1st March
We left the hotel at 5am, for Horton Plains National Park, and reached the park entrance quite early. We
encounter Changeable Hawk Eagle, Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon, Chestnut-headed Bee-eater, Sri Lanka Bush

Warbler, Blyth's Reed Warbler, Green Warbler, Bright-green Warbler, Sri Lanka Scimitar Babbler, Indian
Blackbird, Indian Blue Robin, Dull-blue Flycatcher, Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher, some Sambar Deer, Brown
Mongoose and Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys. Half of the group returned to the hotel for lunch at 1.30pm and the
rest completed the whole trail and came back to the hotel at 3pm.
At 4 pm we went to Bomuruella for more birding, and returned to the hotel, and did our checklist for the day at
7.30pm, and had dinner after the briefing for the next day’s programme.
Day 10 Monday 2nd March
At 6.10am, we left for the Seetha Eliya reserve for some pre-breakfast birding. We returned to the hotel at
7.40am, and had our breakfast, then checked out of the hotel at 9am, and proceeded to Yala, stopping en-route
at Ella for lunch. We encountered Yellow Bittern, Great Thick-knee, Jungle Prinia and Sri Lanka Whistling
Thrush. We stopped at the Rawana waterfalls for pictures. At 5pm, we reached the Debarawewa tank and did
some birding, before we checked in to the hotel at 6pm. We did our checklist for the day at 7pm, and had dinner
after the briefing for the next day’s programme.
Day 11 Tuesday 3rd March
At 7.30am, we checked out of our hotel and left for Bundala National Park, for a Jeep safari. We encountered
Black-necked Stork, Eurasian Spoonbill, Striated Heron, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Pacific Golden Plover, Grey
Plover, Caspian Plover, Common Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Lesser Sand Plover, Black-tailed Godwit,
Common Redshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Ruddy
Turnstone, Red Knot, Red-necked Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Ruff, Oriental Pratincole, Gull-billed Tern, Caspian
Tern, Little Tern, White-winged Tern, Oriental Turtle Dove, Orange-breasted Green Pigeon, Jacobin Cuckoo,
Pied Cuckoo, Collared Scops Owl, Black-headed Cuckooshrike, Yellow Wagtail, Clamorous Reed Warbler,
Yellow-eyed Babbler, Streaked Weaver, Baya Weaver and Black-headed Munia. We reached our next hotel in
Yala at 1.40pm and, after lunch, relaxed till late evening. At 4.30 pm, we did a little birding around the hotel
premises. We did our checklist for the day at 7pm, and had dinner after the briefing for the next day’s
programme.
Day 12 Wednesday 4th March
We started the day at 5.45am after tea, and headed out to the Yala National Park with a picnic breakfast. We
encountered the Lesser Adjutant, Watercock, Pin-tailed Snipe, Little Stint, Grey-bellied Cuckoo, Plaintive
Cuckoo, Yellow-crowned Woodpecker, Ashy-crowned Sparrow-Lark, White-faced Starling, Indian Silverbill and
White-throated Silverbill. We also saw Asian Wild Elephants, Water Buffalo, Leopard, Wild Boar, Indian Grey
Mongoose, Ruddy Mongoose, Muntjac and Black-naped Hare. Four members of the group went back to the
hotel at noon, while the rest continued until 6pm. After coming back to the hotel, we met up for the checklist at
7.30pm, and had dinner after the briefing for the next day’s programme.

Day 13 Thursday 5th March
After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel at 9.30am, and left for Embilipitiya. We arrived at our next hotel at
12.45 and, after checking in, had lunch. After lunch, we left for a half day safari at Udawalawe National Park,
where we encountered Plum-headed Parakeet, Jerdon's Nightjar, Brown Fish Owl, Ashy Prinia and Tawny-
bellied Babbler. We reached the hotel after the safari at around 7pm, and met up for the checklist at 7.30pm, and
had dinner after the briefing for the next day’s programme.
Day 14 Friday 6th March
After breakfast we left for Singharaja Rainforest at 9am, en-route visiting the Rakwana hills for some light
birding. It was a warm clear day, and we enjoyed looking at the paddyfields and clove plantations as we drove in
to Singharaja. We stopped at a wayside shop, to enjoy some cool king coconut and to stretch our legs.
We reached the next hotel at around 12.45pm, and had lunch after checking in. At around 4pm in the evening,
we had a small walk around the hotel gardens and walked up to the village, where the foothills of the Rainforest
begin. We were able to see Emerald Dove, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Ashy Drongo, Black Bulbul, Legge's
Flowerpecker and Black-throated Munia.
We did our checklist for the day at 7.30pm, and had dinner after the briefing for the next day’s programme.
Day 15 Saturday 7th March
We started our day at 5.30am and, after an early breakfast, proceeded to Singharaja Forest in jeeps. We
encountered Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Lesser Yellownape, Golden-fronted Leafbird, Sri Lanka Blue Magpie,
Sri Lanka Drongo, Black-naped Monarch, Orange-billed Babbler, Sri Lanka Hill Myna, Spot-winged Thrush and
Sri Lanka Scaly Thrush. We returned to the hotel at 1pm for lunch, and relaxed until 4 pm. Our evening walk, to
the Ketalapathana road, yielded more bird sightings and a glimpse of some villages. Since it was the last night
with some of the group members, we organized a small cocktail party for the group members under the open
sky, with traditional kerosene oil lamps.
We did our checklist for the day at 7.30pm, and had dinner after the briefing for the next day’s programme.
Day 16 Sunday 8th March
Once again, after an early breakfast, a few keen birders set out for a birding session around the Ketalapathana
road area, and encountered Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Drongo Cuckoo, Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal and
Malabar Trogon. The rest of the morning was at leisure and, after lunch, the group split into two, with one going
towards Colombo and the other for their Whale-watching extension to Mirissa. At 6.30pm we reached the hotel,
and we checked in for our overnight stay in Colombo. We met for the checklist at 7.30pm, and had dinner
afterwards.
Day 17 Monday 9th March
In the morning after breakfast we left for the Airport, in time to catch the flight back.
