SUNDAY THOUGHT
John 20:19-31
Jesus’ appearance today to the Apostles through locked
doors is not some magic trick on His part, but a
reminder that wherever we are, Jesus is also present.
This along with His greeting of “peace” should give us
a deep sense of assurance. The offering of peace was
not Jesus’ way of saying “hello’, but a blessing
connected with a promise He has made to each of us.
Jesus is master of the universe and He will give us all
we need, both in this life, and more importantly, in the
life to come. There are many things that can get to us if
we allow them too. Personal and work problems seem
to abound. We need the assurance form the one who
has overcome all that life could throw at Him. Jesus
even overcame death! Trust Him and everything will be
fine.

SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 23, 2017
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Saint Vincent Strambi, Bishop (1745-1824)
Vincent was born on January 1, 1745, the
youngest of four children to Giuseppe and Eleanora
Strambi. His father was a pharmacist known for his
charitable works and his mother was noted for her
sanctity. Vincent was a troublesome child who
excelled in athletics and who, in his teenage years,
become more devote. Educated by the Friars Minor he
taught his fellow students the catechism. Despite
initial resistance from his parents, Vincent entered the
diocesan seminary in 1762. Before his ordination to
the priesthood Vincent made a retreat at the monastery
of Vetralla. The monastery belonged to the Passionist
congregation and it was here that Vincent met the
Congregation’s founder Saint Paul of the Cross.
Impressed by the devotion of the Passionists he asked
Paul to be admitted to the Order. Feeling that Vincent
did not have the stamina for Passionist life, Paul
initially refused. Finally after many trips back to the
monastery, Paul of the Cross relented and admitted
him to the congregation.
As a young priest, Vincent attended the
deathbed of Saint Paul of the Cross and penned a
definitive biography of the founder. He preached
missions with intense passion. In 1800, Vincent was
made bishop of Macerata, where he instituted a
program of reform. He lived simply, lavished care on
the poor, and rose each night at midnight to pray. In
1808, Vincent was exiled by Napoleonic troops and
forced to go to Milan. There, many young priests
sought him out for direction.
In 1823, the new-elderly Vincent was
permitted to resign his see; Pope Leo XII brought him
to Rome as an advisor. Only three months into his
pontificate, Leo become gravely ill. Called to
administer the last rites, Vincent reassured him, “Holy
Father, someone is going to offer his life for you, and I
shall go now and say Mass for your recovery.” The
next day, Leo found new strength. Two days after that,
Saint Vincent suffered a stroke. He died on January 1,
1824. It is believed that he had offered his own life for
the pope’s. Saint Vincent Strambi’s feast is September

MERCY SUNDAY
This weekend is Mercy Sunday. Divine Mercy
Devotions will be held Sunday afternoon from 2:30
p.m. until 3:30 p.m. beginning with the rosary before
the Blessed Sacrament. The Divine Mercy Chaplet will
be recited at 3:00 p.m. Come and join us to give praise
and thanks for Jesus’ Divine Mercy.
DISPOSAL OF OLD PALMS
When an article has been blessed by the Church, it
means that it is set aside to be used to draw hearts and
minds to a deeper love and awareness of God. Once a
blessed article can no longer be recognized for that
purpose, whether through prolonged use or because it
has been deliberately rendered so, the Church
considers that article as no longer blessed. This
principle applies to statues, rosaries, religious pictures,
religious books, palms, or any article that has been
blessed and was used for devotion.
Therefore a suggested way to dispose of last year’s
palms would simply be to crumble them up and use
them, for example, as mulch in your flowerbeds or
around your bushes. The deliberate breaking up of
religious articles or rendering them unrecognizable for
devotion in some fashion before deposing of them is
done so that others cannot use the discarded objects in
an irreverent manner. Religious articles can be buried,
burned, or disposed of in any manner that would
prevent them from being misused use by others.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT
One of the most difficult struggles for those who have
family members using and/or addicted to drugs,
especially heroin, is silence. They often have no one to
talk to about their pain and the heavy burden on
their hearts. We can change that together. There’s a
crisis raging in our state. The heroin epidemic is
wreaking havoc on hundreds and thousands of
individuals and families across our region. Learn more
so that you can be that person others can turn to in their
time of need. Go to: www.GreaterthanHeroin.com.
Understanding is greater than this crisis. TOGETHER
we are GREATER than heroin. Each of us can be a
source of hope, help and healing to someone in need.
TRINITY DOME
Next weekend, April 29/30, 2017, in response to the
Bishops of the United States request, a special
collection will be taken up for the completion of the
Trinity Dome in the Basilica of the National Shrine of
the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. If you
wish contribute to this special project, make your check
payable to St. Anthony of Padua Parish with “for the
Dome” on the memo line and place it in a separate
envelope marked for the Shrine.

HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW…
Did you know that the Second Sunday of Easter is
called the Sunday of Divine Mercy.
Jesus asked St. Faustina to promote
his mercy on this day, and St. John
Paul II instituted this feast for the
Universal Church on April 30, 2000.
You are invited come to our Divine
Mercy Holy Hour at 2:30pm and to
pray for God’s mercy for our world.
For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, have mercy
on us and on the whole world.
SEE WHAT WE HAVE DONE FOR THE
POOR!
St. Anthony’s faith community, sacrificed and
contributed money to the poor in Operation Rice Bowl
throughout Lent. It has been such an inspiring witness
that we take part in God’s special love for the poor. The
grand total raised was $4,393.49. Special thanks to the
Social Concerns Committee for organizing this
worthwhile fundraiser. We truly appreciate all your
sincere sharing and sacrifice.

CO-ED SOFTBALL
LEAGUE

our Co-Ed (age 18 and over)

parish community to come together for friendly,
competitive softball games on Sunday afternoons this
summer at State Road Park. Whether you are a
seasoned veteran or a rookie, we hope to see you
there! Pick up a registration form after mass, and

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
“Adoption is a very generous way to become parents.
I encourage those who cannot have children to expand
their marital love to embrace those who lack a proper
family situation. They will never regret having been
generous. Adopting a child is an act of love, offering
the gift of a family to someone who has none.” —
Pope Francis, The Joy of Love, 179.
CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER
“O Death, where is your sting? O Hell, where is your
victory? Christ is risen, and you are overthrown.
Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen. Christ is
risen, and the angels rejoice. Christ is risen, and life
reigns. Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the
grave. For Christ, being risen from the dead, is
become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
To Him be glory and dominion unto ages of ages.” —
St. John Chrysostom, from an Easter homily.
RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK

came to the United States in 1863 to
serve the needs of the French speaking

RCIA CORNER
Kayla Bidwell received Baptism,
Confirmation, and her First Holy
Communion at the Easter Vigil.
She is now called a neophyte,
meaning a newly initiated Christian in the Church.
She has also entered into the fourth stage of this
process: Mystagogy. In mystagogy, we reflect on
how God communicated his love to Kayla and to the
Church throughout this time.

Many parishioners and their family
members are serving in the United
States Military. Please pray for their
safety, along with the safety of our
Parma Police Officers, Firefighters,
and EMTs.
WEEKLY MASS REMINDER
When we pray the Lord’s Prayer,
we assume the Orans posture,
where we raise our hands in
prayerful surrender to the Father.
At the end of the prayer when we say, “…but deliver
us from evil,” we put our hands down. Only the priest
should keep this posture during the Embolism.
