Our Mission To make Christ known by feeding his sheep through Word and Deed.
St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, Jacksonville, Florida July/August 2018
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
I was a stranger and you welcomed me. (Matt 25:35)
Dear Parish Family:
My policy has always been to stay away from political issues when “in the pulpit” or
through other church communications. But the recent issues concerning immigration in
general -- and the separation of children from their parents in particular – goes beyond the
political and moves me to make a statement.
I find am deeply disturbed – and often moved to tears -- by the “current swell of fear
and scapegoating which seeks to criminalize and unfairly deport undocumented immigrants
in our communities.” My position dovetails with that of the Episcopal Churches’ policy,
which is now, and always has been, to welcome the stranger, the foreigner, the immigrant.
That’s not hard to do when we remember that we are a nation of strangers,
foreigners, and immigrants. We share a common commitment to honor immigrants,
refugees, and neighbors from different countries, cultures and religions because these
strangers/immigrants are our long-time friends, neighbors, colleagues, students, service
providers – and taxpayers. And, in spite of all the ugliness “out there,” statistics show that
immigrants support a growing economy and that the crime rate among immigrants is lower
than the general population.
But, above all, I believe what is most important is that scripture tells us that every
person reflects the image of God and deserves to be treated with dignity. And right now a
lot of men, women, and children aren’t being treated with dignity.
Time and space doesn’t allow for any in depth discussion here of the immigration
issues; and, I am well aware that these issues are difficult and complex, but I believe that
there is no way we can go wrong if we treat each other with love and respect.
Faithfully,
Mother Michael+

Our Pledge to the Diocese is current.
It must be summertime because the church
calendar shows us that we are not very busy!
Which is not altogether true. We still have to
prepare for worship each Sunday… AND…
weather permitting … beginning around the
middle of July, the church will be getting a new
roof!!!
So, there may not be a lot of church-related
events going on here at St Catherine’s or in the
diocese, we are still busy.
This July 4th have a great time and remember
to stay safe.
AND, mark your calendars for Rally Day on
September 9th. More information to come!

Did you know?
General Convention of the Episcopal Church is held every three years, and is
the bicameral governing body of the Church. It is comprised of the House of Bishops, with
upwards of 200 active and retired bishops, and the House of Deputies, with clergy and lay
deputies elected from the 109 dioceses and three regional areas of the Church, at more
than 800 members.
General Convention is the primary governing and legislative body of the Episcopal Church in
the United States of America. With the exception of the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer,
and the Constitution and Canons, it is the ultimate authority in the Episcopal Church.
All diocesan, coadjutor, suffragan, and assistant bishops of the Episcopal Church, whether
active or retired, have seat and vote in the House of Bishops. Each diocese of the Episcopal
Church, as well as the Navajoland Area Mission and the Convocation of Episcopal Churches
in Europe, are entitled to representation in the House of Deputies by four clergy deputies,
either presbyters or deacons, canonically resident in the diocese and four lay deputies who
are confirmed communicants in good standing. The Episcopal Church of Liberia is entitled
to representation in the House of Deputies by two clergy deputies and two lay deputies, all
with seat and voice but no vote. The Official Youth Presence is a group of eighteen high
school youth, two from each province. They also have seat and voice but no vote.
Resolutions must pass both houses in order to take effect.
The convention is divided into committees which consider resolutions. Resolutions arise
from four different sources: 1) "A" resolutions from interim bodies whose work is collected
in what is referred to as the "Blue Book" 2) "B" resolutions which come from Bishops 3) "C"
resolutions which come from diocesan conventions and 4) "D" resolutions which originate
from Deputies. Each properly submitted resolution is referred to a convention committee
which makes its recommendation to the House. When one house has acted on the
resolution it is sent to the other house for consideration.
The dates of 79h General Convention of The Episcopal Church are from
Thursday, July 5 to Friday, July 13, 2018 and, the convention will be held at The Austin
Convention Center, Austin, Texas (Diocese of Texas).
