This Sunday commemorates the return of
the Icons into the churches, according to the
decision of the Seventh Ecumenical Synod (787).
The Church determined that this celebration
would take place each year on the first Sunday
of Lent, as the Sunday of Orthodoxy, starting
March 11, 843. On this Sunday every year the
triumph of the faith of Orthodoxy is celebrated
with ceremony. The Icon of Christ, according to
St. John Damascus, is a distinct affirmation and
a reminder of the fact of His Incarnation, which
has a vital significance for the salvation of the
faithful, an affirmation which prevails to this
day in the Orthodox Church. The celebration of
the day includes the procession with the Icon of
Christ around the inside of the church with
pomp and reverence. The Sunday of Orthodoxy
calls upon the people to rededicate themselves
to the deep meaning of their faith and to declare
in unison, "One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all".
Passage from the Synodikon of the Seventh Ecumenical Synod
Priest: As the prophets beheld, as the apostles have taught, as the Church has received, as the teachers have declared, as the world has agreed, as grace has shown forth, as truth has been revealed, as falsehood has been dispelled, as wisdom has become manifest, as Christ awarded; thus we declare; thus we affirm; thus we proclaim Christ our true God, and honor His saints in words, writings, thoughts, sacrifices, churches, and holy icons - on the one hand, worshiping and reverenc-ing Christ as God and Lord, and on the other, honoring the saints as true servants of the same Lord of all, and offering them proper veneration.
This is the faith of the apostles. This is the faith of the fathers. This is the faith of the Orthodox. This is the faith on which the world is established. Therefore, with fraternal and filial love we praise the heralds of the faith, those who with glory and honor have struggled for the faith, and we say: to the champions of Orthodoxy, faithful emperors, most-holy patriarchs, hierarchs, teachers, martyrs, and confessors May your memory be eternal! Let us beseech God that we may be instructed and strengthened by the trials and struggles of these saints, which they endured for the faith even unto death, and by their teachings, entreating that we may to the end imitate their godly life. May we be deemed worthy of obtaining our requests through the mercy and grace of the Great and First Hierarch, Christ our God, through the intercessions of our glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, the divine angels and all the Saints.

Parish Council President Message
Dear St. George Parishioners,
I hope this message finds you well. Last month, on Godparents Sunday we were blessed to have His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey join Father
Anastasios in liturgy. It was a beautiful service. Afterwards, a delicious breakfast was served courtesy of our Sunday School. Our Zephyros Jr and Zephyros Sr troupe
entertained us with some of the dances they performed at the Folk Dance Festival. It was a delightful morning, and a wonderful way to start off the new year!
As we enter the month of March, the season will change, the days will become longer, the weather may change? More importantly we prepare for Pascha starting with
Great Lent. Great Lent or the Great Fast is the most important fasting season in the church year preparing us for the greatest feast of the church year, Pascha. Great
Lent begins on Clean Monday, March 2nd seven weeks before Easter Sunday. The purpose of fasting is to cleanse the body as well as the spirit in preparation for accept-
ing the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. By fasting, we replicate the sacrifice and withdrawal of our Jesus Christ in the desert for 40 days. Thru fasting
we are able to practice discipline by simply controlling what goes into our mouth. There are two parts to fasting; physical and spiritual. Physical fasting is to abstain
from foods that contain animals with red blood such as meats, poultry including products from animals with red blood such as milk, cheese, eggs, and fish and seafood
with backbones. Olive oil and wine are also restricted with the number of meals each day limited. Spiritual fasting consists in abstinence from evil thoughts, desires and
deed, and prayer. Both types of fasting are equally important as our faith shows us the whole body and soul is involved for the total commitment to God.
Looking back to our February Parish Council Meeting, we had the liberty of having the Goya Board join us for the first hour. This was a learning experience for our
Goyans to see what the parish council executes. In addition, the council had the opportunity to gain an understanding of what our youth undertakes. It is with great
pride to hear and see the accomplishments of our Goyans. We wish all of our organizations the best, and as always please do not hesitate to contact any parish council
member with any concerns and/or suggestions.
Lastly, the process of the dome repair has begun. Ever since we have been approved to repair our dome, we have moved forward with obtaining permits. A deposit has
also been given. Unfortunately, we are still short reaching our goal to fully complete the repairing of our dome. Please consider in donating anything you can to help
fulfill this project.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
Kalo Pascha! Welcome to your personal lenten Journey. Students this is a time to reflect, pray and give thanks. Christ willingly died on the cross so that we may be saved. We will be keeping this the focus of our Sunday school lessons in both the higher and lower grades. Our GOYA aged students are being given PASCHA PASSPORTS to record their lenten journey that includes stamps and lessons. Our younger kids will be given a lenten path which they can follow.
Mark 8:31 “He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the el-ders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.” During the Lenten season there are many opportunities to take part in extra services and experiences in the church. Please consider attending. As the spring gets busy- keep Christ first in your life. Make time to attend church and Sunday School regularly. Today’s teaching set the foundation for a lifetime of spirituality.
In Christ, Sonya Bohmann Sunday School Director
THIS MONTH AT THE BOOKSTORE Stop by and visit the BOOKSTORE to purchase these featured books and many other Religious books, gifts, handmade jewelry and other helpful resources that are now available for purchase. The bookstore is open during office hours and Sunday’s following Liturgy.
Children Book: “Friends of Christ” By: Demitrios and Anna Fotopoulos Illustrations By: Paraskevi Hatzithanasi Introducing Friends of Christ, a new twelve volume hardcover series of books for young people. Each beautifully illus-trated volume contains the lives of five Saints, which take children on a journey where the real events of history inspire them to love the Lord and His wondrous deeds in the lives of the Friends of Christ! The March volume contains the lives of Venerable Lavrentios (Mar 7), St. Gregory the Dialogist (Mar 12), St. Alexios the Man of God (Mar 17), the Venerable Serapion (Mar 21), and the St. Ipatios Bishop of Gangra (Mar 21). Each volume includes a large decal.
Adult Books: “Meditations for Great Lent” By: Archimandrite Vassilios Papavassiliou About the Author: Archimandrite Vassilios Papavassiliou is a priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain. He was born in London in 1977 and holds degrees in pastoral and social theology, classics, and Byzantine music. He is the author of the Meditations Series and Thirty Steps to Heaven (Ancient Faith Publishing), as well as Journey to the Kingdom: An Insider’s Look at the Liturgy and Beliefs of the Eastern Orthodox Church (Paraclete Press) and numerous articles on Christian Orthodox faith and theology.
The Lenten Triodion exhorts us, “Let us observe a fast acceptable and pleasing to the Lord.” Using hymns from the Tri-odion and the Scripture readings appointed for the season, Meditations for Great Lent shows us how to make our fast acceptable: to fast not only from food but from sin; to fast with love and humility, as a means to an end and not an end in itself. Keep this gem of a book with you to inspire you for the Fast and to dip into for encouragement as you pursue your Lenten journey.
St. George Philoptochos News
Good day to all The ladies will soon be baking once again for Lagana, and of course, Easter Bread….Before that endeav-or begins, I’d like to share a few things that has been happening.
FOOD DRIVE The ladies will have an ongoing project involving the St. George Community. You will see a sign on a shopping cart located in the hall. This will benefit the West Chester Food Cupboard. A list of items will be posted both on the cart and the bulletin board outside the hall. Two Philoptochos volunteers will routinely empty the shopping cart and take it to the shelter in Broomall. This project is replacing Bertha’s Bundles.
RISE AGAINST HUNGER On April 4th a group of St. George Parishioners will again go to St. Luke’s in Broomall and package food for the needy. This is not just a Philoptochos project but one for the entire community. Lunch will be pro-vided at noon and then we will start to package food at 1pm.. Please bring your families. It’s a wonderful way to express time and talent for thousands of people in need. Last year we sent close to 40,000 meals to Guatemala. More information to follow. Easter is rapidly approaching and with that many commitments with the ladies. March 1st we will be sell-ing Lagana for Clean Monday on March 2nd. March 8th is the Lenten Luncheon. March 14th is Sights and Sounds at St. Luke Church and many of our children participate. We have already had a meeting to prepare and organize our most prominent event:

The GOYAns have been working diligently practicing for numerous hours in order to be ready for the big day. On Saturday, March 14 th GOYAns will display their artistic, musical, and theatrical talents. The event is hosted by the parish of St. Lukes in Broomall PA this year. Everyone is welcome to come to watch! We are so thankful to all the adults that stepped up and accepted leadership roles in leading events, making food, and purchasing costumes! None of this would be possible without you! Additionally, on March 29 th we will be honoring our Greek heritage by walking in the Greek Independence Day Parade, and then following the parade, we will be dancing at the parish of St. Demetrios in Upper Darby.
Furthermore, not only are the GOYAns constantly busy balancing school and sights and sounds practices, but they also make time for greater things and never forget to give back. The GOYAns get together at least once a month to make ham and cheese sandwiches that are given to local shelters. In addition to the sandwiches, the GOYAns are collecting soda tabs that will be given to the Ronald Mcdonald House. Please save your soda tabs and put them in the jar located in the main hall of the church. Thank you!
