STARLIGHT AWARD
Drinker Biddle & Reath LLPJOHN T. CUNNINGHAM AWARD
Welcome to the Starlight Ball!Dear Friends, Patrons and Donors,
It is my pleasure to thank our Starlight Award honorees, John and Margaret Post, for their support of the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Through their Foundation, the Posts have been strong supporters of MPAC since our inception. Their generous contributions to multiple capital campaigns over the past 20 years have helped to make many of our front of house, balcony and back of house renovations possible.
I would also like to thank our John T. Cunningham Award honorees, Drinker Biddle, for their support representing our organization through the creation of the Theatre’s first ever collective bargaining agreement with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. The significant savings in legal
fees has helped MPAC to enhance our work as a major arts institution within New Jersey and enrich the lives of hundreds of thousands of people each year.
I would also like to extend my deepest thanks to our Starlight Ball Committee for putting together this evening’s Gala. This year, the committee has again surpassed itself in providing us with a great selection of Silent Auction items for you to bid on, wonderful entertainment and memorable moments throughout the evening. The committee’s organization and dedication to this event each year ensures that this evening will be a resounding success.
To my fellow trustees, thank you for your leadership and guidance in support of this important arts organization. You give tirelessly of your time, services and resources to keep the Theatre on sound footing. Our MPAC staff ’s hard work and stewardship of this wonderful arts center are greatly appreciated as well. Their efforts have led to the Theatre becoming the cultural jewel and an economic engine of Morristown.
Last, but certainly not least, thanks to all of you for your support of this important fundraising initiative.
Enjoy this evening of entertainment and dancing with the knowledge that your generosity is supporting MPAC’s arts education and community outreach programs for the diverse population we serve!
Sincerely,
Joseph M. Goryeb Chairman, Board of Trustees
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Welcome and thank you for joining us tonight for our 16th Annual Starlight Ball!
We are thrilled that you have joined us for this wonderful evening of entertainment, dancing and fundraising that celebrates the Mayo Performing Arts Center.
The Mayo Performing Arts Center serves the Northern New Jersey area with over 200 performances annually that touch the lives of over 200,000 patrons, including over 40,000 children. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary this year, we remain committed to bringing the world’s greatest entertainers to our hometown, providing vibrant arts education experiences for
children, as well as serving as an economic engine that drives more than $14 million in annual revenue to the area.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our honorees, John and Margaret Post, and Drinker Biddle, for their support of our Theatre. I also thank veteran Broadway actor and luminary Tom Wopat, who will be entertaining you tonight along with our own talented Performing Arts Company.
We are especially proud of MPAC’s Performing Arts Company. These talented young performers volunteer their time and serve as our ambassadors, performing at many venues throughout the year, including hospitals, senior centers and for nonprofit organizations. Their performance at our Starlight Ball is always one of the highlights of the event.
Finally, I would like to thank all the people who make this great fundraising event possible. These include the Starlight Ball Committee, MPAC’s hardworking staff, and its committed Board of Trustees under the leadership of Joseph M. Goryeb. This is truly a team effort to organize the Starlight Ball every year and make it a night to remember!
Thank you for supporting our major fundraising event of the year and the Theatre’s mission to present a wide range of programs that entertain, enrich and educate the diverse population of the region and enhance the economic vitality of Northern New Jersey. Enjoy the evening!
Sincerely,
Allison LarenaPresident and CEO
Welcome to the Starlight Ball!
WHAT WE DO TONIGHT
What we do tonight is to try to keepThe wonder of the performing arts alive;
What we do tonight may not cure the stricken;Nor fill the bellies of a starving people;
Nor send the ghetto child to camp; What we do tonight might... just might... in a time of special need
Lift the spirits of a dying manOr feed the soul of a woman who’s lost her faith
Or fill a small child’s heart with inspiration. What we do tonight may not save lives, but
What we do tonight can make those lives just a little more worth living.

We are proud to honor John and Margaret Post for their longstanding commitment and dedicated support of the Mayo Performing Arts Center. We are extremely grateful for their extraordinary support of three capital campaigns, which helped transform our facility into one of the most beautiful state-of-the-art venues in the region. They established the John A. and Margaret Post Foundation in 1995 and championed numerous causes including local hospitals, schools, the Red Cross, the United Way, and many agencies for disadvantaged individuals and families. Their generosity has changed countless lives both here and throughout Northwest New Jersey and the Slate Belt region of Pennsylvania.
Margaret Post is President of Father John’s Animal House in Sparta and donates her time and energy managing the animal shelter. Until recently, Margaret served on the Endowment Fund Board of Pope John XXIII High School, and volunteered at a number of different organizations in Sussex County. John is the Founder and President of Lamtec Corporation, located in Mount Bethel, PA, and owner of Fonzarelli’s Collision and Auto Repair in Augusta, NJ. John is involved in several businesses and spends much of his time in product development and customer relations in the United States and areas around the world. John also served as a trustee on the Catholic Academy of Sussex County Board until moving to Pennsylvania in January. Together they share a commitment to giving back to the community, and we are thrilled and delighted to recognize John and Margaret Post with the Starlight Award.
MPAC is honoring Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP with the John T. Cunningham Award in appreciation of their outstanding support of the Theatre. Their generous pro
bono work representing our organization through labor negotiations helped MPAC to create its first ever collective bargaining agreement with the stagehands union that proved to be a fair and thoughtful contract for the theatre and its employees. The significant savings in legal fees has helped MPAC to continue its work as a major arts institution within New Jersey and enrich the lives of hundreds of thousands of adults and students each year.A national law firm with 11 offices and approximately 650 attorneys, Drinker Biddle has earned a reputation for providing exceptional legal service to businesses and individuals throughout the United States. The firm is also known for its strong commitment to community service—actively seeking opportunities to make a positive impact on the communities where its lawyers work. With offices in Florham Park and Princeton, Drinker Biddle (formerly Shanley & Fisher) has a storied history in the Garden State and has more lawyers in the state than any other Am Law 100 firm. Its New Jersey presence continues to grow, and today boasts some of the most recognized leaders in the legal profession. We are grateful to Drinker Biddle for their invaluable contribution to MPAC and delighted to recognize them with the John T. Cunningham Award.
Congratulations to MPACon its 20th Anniversary

Tom WopatAll it takes is a phrase or two from Tom Wopat’s warm, engaging baritone to trigger the desire to hear more. And the more one listens, the better it gets -- from the way he finds the heart of a song’s story to his lyrical phrasing and his gently swinging, jazz-infused rhythms.
That’s a large handful of uniquely appealing qualities, and they’re all over the fourteen utterly captivating tunes on I’ve Got Your Number, his eighth album. Tom applies his far-ranging interpretive skills to discovering new, intriguing musical twists in such Great American Songbook classics as “The Good Life,” “Call Me,” “Born To Be Blue,” “I Won’t Dance” and, of course, the title track. As if that wasn’t
enough, he also takes his listeners on adventurous new journeys through contemporary songs from the likes of Paul Simon, Judy Collins, Bruce Hornsby and James Taylor.
At first glance, that could be viewed as a surprisingly diverse program of material from a performer who may be best known for his starring role in the ‘80s hit television series The Dukes of Hazzard. But his versatility was there from the beginning, and on full display in a career reaching from his television work of the ‘70s and ‘80s to high visibility Broadway roles in 1999’s Annie Get Your Gun and 2008’s Catered Affair (he received Tony Award nominations for both), as well as Chicago, Forty-Second St., Sondheim on Sondheim and more. Tom’s career is still very much in high gear, including a role in Quentin Tarantino’s film Django Unchained. His acting work in musicals also continued in 2014, with a major role in ABC Family film, Lovestruck – a movie musical with a magical twist. Wopat was also the 2013 recipient of the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs Lifetime Achievement award.
But his most appropriate musical orientation didn’t start to become clear to him until he made his first recordings of standards, with a jazz slant. “It happened abruptly,” Tom recalls. “In 1999-2000, when I was doing the Broadway show Annie Get Your Gun, we did a cast album. And the people at Angel asked me if I wanted to make a jazz record. You know, like a Sinatra record. And of course I said yes. But it wasn’t until I actually started making the records of standards, adding pop tunes, giving them jazz treatments, that I realized it was exactly what I aspired to do musically.”

The Miracle on South StreetCelebrating 20 years!
The 2014-2015 season marks the 20th anniversary of the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Originally built as Morristown’s premier movie theater in 1937 and called The Community Theatre, MPAC (renamed in 2009) was saved from the wrecking ball in 1994 by a group of community volunteers who envisioned the value a vibrant arts center could have on a town.
Morristown resident and classical pianist Alexander Slobodyanik invited his friend, Valery Gergiev, the conductor of the Kirov Orchestra, to enter the boarded up theater in early 1994. Mr. Gergiev stood on stage, snapped his fingers, heard the acoustics and proclaimed, “The Kirov will play here.” After a summer in which hundreds of residents volunteered their time to remove mushrooms growing from the floor, and cleaned up the mold, mildew and dust, the Kirov did play here. On September 29, 1994, a new era was born with the rebirth of The Community
Theatre – once Morristown’s crown jewel of a movie palace -- into a concert hall.
Much has changed since then. Today, Morristown’s little community theater has blossomed into a world class performing arts center, undergoing four major renovations since 1994. In 2007, the stage house was expanded by 24,000 square feet to accommodate a larger stage, dressing rooms, updated production amenities, an orchestra pit and administrative offices. The most recent front of house renovations included a digital marquee, a new box office, an elevator, renovated lobby and expanded and updated restroom facilities.

MPAC’s 20th Anniversary Season - A Reason to Celebrate and Support!
MPAC remains Morristown’s crown jewel, and has evolved into a world renowned performing arts center, with over 200 events on our stage every year, attracting over 200,000 patrons, with ticket sales in excess of $8 million, and with an economic impact over $14 million on the area. Tony Bennett, Ringo Starr, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, and many more of the world’s best known performers have graced the stage. It is the Morris County home to the New Jersey Symphony and New Jersey Ballet, and over the years, has provided space for many other New Jersey based arts organizations.
Beyond what goes on our stage is the growth of MPAC’s education and outreach programs that bring the arts experience to children in communities throughout New Jersey, engaging the next generation of arts lovers in educational programs that instill confidence, inspire learning and encourage teamwork. From our teen Performing Arts Company to school residency programs, productions such as Hairspray to Music Students of the Month, MPAC education programs touch the lives of over 40,000 children and families annually.
“The Miracle on South Street,” as dubbed by historian John T. Cunningham, still continues to inspire.
Join us on Friday, January 30, 2015 as Valery Gergiev returns for the first time since the opening in 1994 as we celebrate 20 years in Morristown!

Planned giving offers donors exciting opportunities to increase the impact of their giving — often while decreasing current or future tax obligations. With a planned gift, such as a bequest, you can assist MPAC in its mission of bringing the finest performing arts to our community, providing arts education to all ages, and operating and maintaining our facility. Every future bequest that we can count on builds our long-term financial strength, and helps us plan with more confidence. If you have included MPAC in your plans, please let us know.
