State of Texas Assessments
of Academic Readiness
-
What is STAAR?
STAAR: State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness
STAAR is a more rigorous standardized testing program that is
replacing TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills)
for elementary, middle school and high school students.
-
How is STAAR different from TAKS?
STAAR emphasizes “readiness” standards, which are the knowledge and skills
that are considered most important for future success in the next grade or
subject area and for college or career.
STAAR is the name of the assessment program.
End-Of-Course exams (EOCs) are the specific tests within STAAR that are
graduation requirements.
Key points about EOCs:
★ Increase in test difficulty with a focus on college/career readiness ★ Increase in the number of test items ★ Impose a new, four-hour time limit on tests ★ Increase the number of open-ended questions on math and science assessments
15% EOC grade requirement has been waived for the 2012-2013
school year, but students are still required to obtain
a cumulative score for each subject area.
-
Who will take the STAAR End-of-Course Exams, and
which exams are required for graduation?
★ Students who entered the ninth grade in 2011-12 (the graduating class of 2015 and beyond) must meet STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) requirements in order to graduate.
★ All students will take the EOC as they complete the corresponding course– including Students earning Algebra 1 credit in 8th grade
Students earning credit through AP, IB, or Dual-Credit courses
Students earning credit by exam
Students earning credit through correspondence courses
★ Students who receive special education services will also take EOCs. The Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) committee will determine the appropriate tests
and the manner in which the cumulative score will apply for these students.

-
How will EOC exams affect course credit,
grade point average (GPA), and class rank?
★ The final course grade will be used to determine credit earned in a course with an EOC
assessment.
★ The EOC assessment score will not be used to calculate grade point average or class rank.
★ The 15% score requirement for EOCs has been waived for the 2012-2013 school year.
-
What happens if a student passes the course,
but fails (does not earn the minimum score on)
the EOC assessment?
• If a student earns a 70 or above in the course, but does not earn the required minimum score on the EOC, the student must retake the EOC.
• The student is not required to retake the course.
• Allen ISD will provide accelerated instruction to any student who fails to perform satisfactorily on an EOC.
-
What happens if a student fails the course,
but passes (earns the minimum score on)
the EOC assessment?
• If a student earns a final course grade
below a 70 in an EOC-tested subject (or in
any subject required for graduation), the
student must retake the course.
• The student is not required to retake the
EOC, although students earning only the
minimum score are strongly encouraged to
retest.
-
What happens if a student fails the course,
and fails (does not earn minimum score on) the
EOC assessment?
• In this scenario, the student would be
required to retake both the course and the
EOC.
• Allen ISD will provide accelerated
instruction to any student who fails to
perform satisfactorily on an EOC.

MINIMUM
-
★ A student must achieve a minimum score on an EOC assessment for it to count toward graduation requirements.
★ Students not meeting the minimum score must retake the assessment at the next available opportunity.
★ In addition, in order to graduate, a student must meet a cumulative score on all of the EOC assessments taken in each content area:
English (Reading & Writing), Math, Science, and Social Studies.
★ Students who have met the minimum score on an EOC assessment may retake the assessment to increase the overall cumulative score needed
for their particular graduation plan.
Graduation Requirements
-
CUMULATIVE SCORE REQUIREMENTS
★ In each content area, the scores for all three EOC tests will be added together.
English Language Arts will add together scores for the three
reading EOCs and three writing EOCs. Each of the 6 EOCs
for ELA is scored separately, but all six scores combine into
one cumulative score.
★ The cumulative score must be equal to or greater than the passing standard multiplied by the number of tests.
On the next slide, for example purposes only, the passing
standard is assumed to be 1000, and therefore the cumulative
score would be 3000 per content area. Other assumed scores:
800 - Level 1 (Minimum Standard)
1000 - Level 2 (Satisfactory Standard)
1200 - Level 3 (Advanced Standard)

Additional Information
• Make sure your mailing address is correct in Skyward– EOC score reports, EOC remediation info for students will be sent via ground mail.
• Students not earning a passing (minimum) score on an EOC are required to retest. We strongly advise that those students retest at the first available opportunity (July).
• Although the minimum score on an EOC counts toward the cumulative score required for graduation, students earning the minimum score are strongly encouraged to retest, since a satisfactory score earns more points toward the cumulative score.
