hello@lcractivate.co.uk

@LCRActivate

Computing: where have we come from?

2 /12

• Large terminals...• To small devices

hello@lcractivate.co.uk

@LCRActivate

What is this event about?

VR – Virtual RealityComputational replacement of subjective reality (e.g. put on a headset)

AR – Augmented RealityAdding (augmenting) information from subjective reality (e.g. head-up route display)

MR – Mixed RealityProviding augmented reality that you can truly manipulate without obstructing subjective realityHarder than it looks…

hello@lcractivate.co.uk

@LCRActivate

What do we need to do this?

Hardware-Examples of what FACT can offer in support to SMEs follow on the next slide, including sometimes associated software

Software-VR, AR or MR technology does not drive itself

-Later will talk about the computer science and applied maths support from LJMU

hello@lcractivate.co.uk

@LCRActivate

AI

History of computingIf computers can process series of instructions (programs), why can’t they respond to general commands (like humans)? (c.1950)

The assumption of general Artificial Intelligence (or AI)

It’s harder than originally anticipated, but great progress has been made in narrow or specific AI

Great increase in computing capability means LCR Activate can offer some support in AI (CC BY-SA 3.0) 2012 A. Taveneaux

hello@lcractivate.co.uk

@LCRActivate

Data Science

People, computers, businesses, the environment, the world all produce data…

Data science is a means of understanding data through:

- Statistics and probability theory- Software tools- Domain knowledgeThese need to be combined

hello@lcractivate.co.uk

@LCRActivate

High Performance Computing

If you are interested in digital products/services that- Process very large amounts of data- Refresh high-resolution visualisation very

rapidly

You may need high performance computing tools- Use cloud computing (processing power

and memory away from user machine): next slide

- Use dedicated supercomputing services- STFC Hartree Centre at Daresbury (CC BY-NC 2.5 SCOTLAND) The University of Edinburgh 2010-2016

hello@lcractivate.co.uk

@LCRActivate

Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing is a means of delivering computing services by hosting them in data centres, away from your/our machines.

- Advantage: you can gain more computing resources as required for specific projects without having to search for new equipment

- Disadvantage: you have to pay cloud computing provider

- but innovation is reducing costs rapidly- Hartree Centre may offer alternative- LCR Activate project offers grant scheme
