Designandbuildanair-poweredrocketthatcanhitadistanttarget,asolarwaterheater,andarubberband-poweredroverthatcanscrambleacrossthefloorintheNASAchallenge.Buildarubberbandcarthatgoesfastandfar,abattery-poweredcarthatgoes10feet,orhigh-performancegliderintheGreenMachineGrandPrix.Ziplines,grabbingdevices,andbiomedicaldeviceswillbedesignedandexploredtoo.

Carnival&Arcade

Whatgameshallweplay?Thatisuptoyou!Buildbuzzboards,ziplines,launchers,andmarblerunsintoagameofyourdesign.Createadancepad,targetgames,mini-rollercoaster,oranewcarnivalgame.UseSCRATCHtocreateanoriginalvideogameforyoungerchildren.Throughthedesignprocessofbrainstorm,design,build,testandre-design,createaCarnival&Arcadetoshowcasethegamesgeneratedduringtheweek.

FashionShow

Designandcreatefurnitureandclothingfrombasicmaterialstofillaroomorwardrobe.Throughexperimentationwiththematerialsathandstudentswilllearnwaystomakefurniturestrongerorclothingtosize.Mobiles,kineticsculpture,andbattery-poweredaccentpiecescanbeusedtoaccessorize.Bydesigning,building,testingandre-designing,improvedoriginalfashions,accessories,andfurniturewillbedesignedandcreated.

Builder’sShowcase

Buildbettersheltersandstructurestoprotectandhelppeopleinneed!Designastructuretoprotectpeoplefromtornados,carriersforwheelchairsorcrutches,speedyshelterforemergencies,oradevicetodelivercarepackagessafelytodisasterareas.Buildingcranes,towers,bridges,andobjectstoscaleareotherchallengeoptionsinthiscategory.Throughtrialandre-designandanunderstandingofthelawsofphysicsandgravity,yourstudentwillprepareforaBuilder’sShowcase.

EventandPartyPlanning

Agreatpartyoreventhasfood,fashion,entertainment,andatmosphere.Inthischallengestudentswillcreate3-Dinvitations,simplerecipes,stringedinstruments,interiorfashiondesigns,aswellasapuppetshowareamongthechallengestheEventandPartyPlanningteamwillface.PaperEngineeringwillbeutilizedtomaketheinvitationsandpuppetswithmovingparts.

Battlebots

BuildanddriveLEGOremotecontrolledrobotsandlearnaboutpowertransmissionwithcombinationsofmotors,gearsandwheels.Builda“bot”anddriveitthroughanobstaclecourseinaBattlebotCompetition.

Mission:SolarSystem(CentralYorklocationonly)LaunchintospaceexplorationtolearnNASAscienceconcepts!Designlandinggear,aroboticarm,lunarrovers,airpoweredrocketsandrubberbandpoweredroversasyoutacklereal-worldengineeringchallenges.Exploringsolarheatandmagneticfieldsareotheroptionsinthischallengecategorythatisstructuredaroundreal-worldengineeringapplications.Throughthedesignprocess,teamworkandhands-onproblemsolving,studentswillcompletethesolarsystemmission.

ResurrectingRube(Ages13&14only)AteamwilldesignandbuildaninventioninspiredbyRubeGoldberg.ComplicatedcontraptionstoachieveasimpletaskareonewaytodescribeRube’sdesigns.Rubeonlydesignedtheoverlycomplicatedcontraptions.Yourteamwilldesignandbuildacontraptionusingthedesignprocess,science,engineering,technologyandmath,aswellasrandomhouseholdobjects–andducttape,lotsofducttape.

Robotics

(Ages13&14only)

Buildandprogramfunctioningrobotsinthischallenge.WorkinsmallteamswiththeLegoNXTSystemtobuildcomputercontrolledrobots.Instructioninterminologyandgeneralroboticswilloccur.Fieldtestsandcompetitionsareapartofthedesignprocess.

ChoicesfortheLIUSTEMK’NexChallengeCampMovingPeopleandThingsDesignChallenge

Teamsarechallengedtocreateanenvironmentallyfriendlypeoplemover.Thisvehiclemustbeabletotravelat least4 feetacross the tableandmustovercomeat leastoneobstacle. Asanaddedchallenge,designandconstructarobotthatperformsataskthatmakestheworldhealthier,cleaner,orsafer.Incorporatetherobotintothedesignofthepeoplemover.

ResearchOutpostDesignChallenge

Teamswilldesignandbuildaresearchoutpostthatincludesarockettotransportresearchersandawaytogenerateenergytosupport theworksiteand livingquartersaswellasaroverto travelabout theresearcharea.Asanaddedchallenge,programBB8tonavigateabouttheoutpost.AmusementParkChallengeTeams will design and build an amusement park that includes rides, symbolic landmarks, a bridge, and atowerwitharevolvingrestaurant.Thedesignoftheparkshouldhaveaconsistentthemecarriedthroughoutthedesign,ridesandstructures.

Mini-GolfCourseChallenge(ages13&14only)Asateam,design&constructan18-holeminigolfcoursearoundaselectedtheme. Inthedesign, includeabridge that spans twelve inches and incorporates a motor. As an added challenge, program Sphero tosuccessfullynavigatethegolfcourse.
