STEP, then LEAP into English Language Programs.STEP AND LEAP APPLICATION FORM
Located in beautiful Vancouver, BC,
Canada, Langara College provides
University Studies, Career Studies,
and Continuing Studies programs
and courses to more than 23,000
students annually.
Langara’s ESL programs use an integrated
approach to language learning. Rather than
teach skills in isolation, we have taken a
more holistic approach. We combine the
language skills of speaking, listening,
reading, and writing, and focus on a variety
of relevant and interesting topics. Using
a content-based curriculum, we engage
students in activities that require the
use of a variety of skills and strategies to
encourage authentic communication.
This creates a dynamic, student-centred
learning environment in which students
acquire language in a natural and
meaningful way. Gradually, students learn
to approach classroom content the same
way as Canadian students whose first
language is English.

LANGARA ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (LEAP)SKILLS TRAINING FOR ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (STEP)
Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) is an intensive English program designed to prepare international and Canadian students whose first language is not English for full-time study at English language universities and colleges. The LEAP Program content is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Academic skills are emphasized at all levels of the program. The level of critical thinking skills and complexity of academic strategies increases as students progress through the program. Sessions are seven weeks in length and offered six times a year. Students are in class for twenty hours a week and are required to do approximately twenty hours of homework per week. There are six levels in LEAP, ranging from intermediate to advanced. The average class size is sixteen students. In order to enter the LEAP Program candidates must meet the minimum English language requirement.
The LEAP Program encourages student integration into the Langara College academic and social community by:
· Facilitating language development
· Promoting academic excellence
· Encouraging students to become successful independent learners
· Providing an environment in which students can feel a part of, and contribute to, the college environment while developing to their full potential
Successful completion of LEAP leads to direct admission to the Open Enrolment (University Transfer) Program.
Instructors in the LEAP Program have advanced degrees in TESL. Instructors are carefully selected for their experience in teaching English for Academic Purposes, cross-cultural awareness, and commitment to helping young adult students achieve academic success. Most have taught ESL outside of Canada.
Skills Training for English Proficiency (STEP) welcomes international and Canadian students whose first language is not English. STEP is an exciting, full-time, intensive, lower level English language program focusing on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada.
The STEP Program is designed to improve skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Through a variety of topics, materials and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their English language skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Sessions are seven weeks in length and offered six times a year. Students are in class twenty hours a week and are required to do approximately ten hours of homework per week. There are three levels in STEP. The average class size is fourteen students.
STEP inspires students to:
· Improve their English language skills
· Use English in a natural and meaningful way through dynamic activities both inside and outside of the classroom
· Learn about Canadian culture by exploring topics connected to Canadian society
· Advance to LEAP and academic programs at Langara Instructors in the STEP Program have degrees in TESL and several years of ESL teaching experience. Many have also taught ESL outside of Canada. STEP instructors are carefully selected for their experience in teaching integrated skills, cross-cultural awareness, and commitment to helping students build a solid foundation of English skills.
