Writing Assignments (Ethics Memo, Goals Memo, Reflections)
1. Complete your writing assignment using Microsoft Word, or some other writing software and
save to your computer. If you can, we suggest saving your writing assignment as a PDF
(Symplicity likes that file type better, and will upload faster).
2. Log‐in to Symplicity using the log‐in information provided by the Externship Office.
3. Click on “Documents.”
4. Click “add new” to upload your writing assignment.
5. Be sure you name it something you can easily identify, ex: Smith Ethics Memo. Select the label
“resume,” then click “submit.”
a. Note: you will already have a dummy resume uploaded to your account – leave this in
your account throughout the semester. If deleted, your writing assignment will be held
in “Pending” and you won’t be able to submit it until someone in the externship office
approves it (during normal business hours). Leave the dummy resume in your account
to avoid this issue.
6. Once uploaded, go to the Jobs: Hamline Career Services Jobs Tab.
7. Click on the tab called “externship assignments” to see all externship assignments available at
that time. Or you may enter the job number in the search box (provided on appendix I in the
guide) to find the assignment.
8. Click “apply” and submit your writing assignment using the “resume” dropdown menu. Once
submitted, a green box that says “Applied” will appear.

Mid‐Semester Evaluation and Final Evaluation
1. Log‐in to Symplicity.
2. Click on “profile: externship placements.”
3. Click on “edit evaluation.”
4. Complete all relevant fields.
a. NOTE: Both the mid and final evaluation are in the same form. Please only complete
the section called “Mid‐Semester Evaluation” at mid‐semester. You will return to this
same form at the end of the semester and complete the section called “Final
Evaluation.”
5. Scroll to the bottom of the form and click “submit” to make sure your answers are saved.
a. NOTE: We recommend typing your answers first in a Word Doc, and copying/pasting
your responses into the form. Since the form is long, Symplicity may time out and any
unsaved responses will be lost!
