managing our growth
Since the move of production and
assembly from Llangefni to Osterholz,
considerable time, effort and hard
work has been applied in improving
the overall performance of the supply
chain from start to finish.
delivery performance, which is a major KPi
for the company was at 98% in 2016 and
now of course management want to push
it to the magical 100% with the target
of ‘zero defect’, which is a hard target
but one that we are all highly focused on.
As part of this ongoing process, malte
Sonnenburg, internal Sales manager from
the manufacturing facility near Bremen,
visited the UK headquarters to meet the
sales team to discuss the new initiatives.
martin hughes, Supply Chain manager
at FAUN Zoeller UK, will be visiting the
plant in Germany on an exchange so that
a better understanding of the production
process can be understood by the UK
team.
Production output at osterholz has risen
from 1100 units a year to just over 1400
units, with growth from UK and eastern
europe. Such growth obviously puts
different demands on the facility and
each team so new initiatives need to be
implemented. the ‘Six Sigma’ continuous
improvement programme which is used
in the Kirchhoff automotive division has
now been utilised with dramatic results.
there is also a closer working relationship
with daimler Benz in wurt, Germany and
mercedes Benz UK with the deliveries of
eCoNiC chassis direct to the production
line at FAUN.
For the UK operation, the changes and
improvements have had a dramatic and
positive effect on the business. Customer
confidence and satisfaction has shot up
as we involve them and the supply chain
with the mobilisation meetings.
New websitetake a look at our new and improved website.we’re extremely excited about the new modern design that is
informative, easy to navigate and will be constantly updated
with current news and features.
It’s worth a visit...
A message from the Ceo... the AmeY transport ConferenceAMEY is one of the largest and most
diverse companies working for the
public and regulated sectors in the
UK, with the ultimate aim of creating
better places for people to live, work
and travel. They employ over 20,000
people keeping daily life functioning
in almost every neighbourhood
in the UK and also provide a wide
range of transport and fleet solutions
for customers who include local
authorities, the NHS, the Ministry of
Justice and for passengers at airports.
the AmeY transport Conference took
place recently in oxford over a two day
period and we were delighted to have
the new SeleCtAPreSS on site for all the
transport teams to admire and examine.
Using the latest technology helps them
deliver efficient, cost effective services that
provide value to their customers.
the AmeY environmental Services team
delivers a broad range of services from
street cleansing and grounds maintenance
to waste collection and treatment. they
have a wealth of experience working with
local authorities and businesses of all sizes.
the variety of innovative resource
management services they offer supports
local authorities in moving towards a
‘zero-waste economy’. they deliver
local initiatives that encourage people
to recycle more, as well as running
educational centres and programmes
designed to engage communities in
national waste reduction programmes.
we were very pleased to be associated
with this event and look forward to
attending many more.

In my last introduction message, I
made reference to Brexit and the fact
that the impact of the result had yet
to be realised and fully understood.
Whilst this remains the same, it is now
further complicated by the impact of
the General Election result and how
our new government will negotiate
with our European colleagues.
Uncertainties are on a larger scale in
the Eurozone and we are also unsure
how the UK economy is going to
travel. Central government funds are
being reduced to local authorities
and the general austerity is still cause
for concern. However innovative
business solutions can often provide
opportunities for those organisations
who invest in new technologies and
concepts, which is why the Kirchhoff
Group is well placed through
its programmes of continuous
improvement and investment.
Group’s trading and market position
has further strengthened with record
order intake and sales in the UK and
Germany for both refuse bodies and
lifting devices. the export market for all
of our manufacturing sites is very strong
and forecasted results for the year are
well ahead of both our expectations and
targets.
Acquisitions for the Group are ongoing
which allows us more opportunities in
new product segments and geographical
areas. Continued investments in plant,
equipment and new technology are
still the driving force of the business,
providing innovative solutions to our
market and customers.
Growth in the UK remains strong with a
steady stream of new customers being
secured, which we believe is due to our
growing product performance and our
high levels of service and support.
over the years, since the merger of
our companies, we have gone through
significant change and challenges but
throughout our people and team have
remained focused, hardworking and
committed. it is very satisfying to see all of
us enjoying the fruits of our labour and a
well-deserved company party is organised
for the team and their families in August.
i would like to express my sincere
thanks to all our staff, customers and
suppliers for their continued support and
friendship.
i do hope that you enjoy reading this
issue of StoPPreSS and i will take this
opportunity of wishing you and your
family a very happy summer wherever you
go and enjoy the break!
Simon Hyde - Chief executive officer
We are pleased to report that two of
our apprentices, Alex Harmer (based
at the Swale depot) and Aaron Moore
(based at Redditch) have completed
their many years of college and ‘on
the job’ training and are now officially
fully qualified vehicle mechanics or as
they now like to be called technicians.
Aaron joined us last year in his final year
at Bristol and has integrated seamlessly
into the team; he now works closely with
the operations team in redditch.
“i did the apprenticeship initially
because i got paid whilst i was working”
said Aaron, “and chose the vehicle
mechanics course as i love working with
vehicles. Now i am fully qualified and
working at FAUN Zoeller which is great,
i look forward to many years with the
company”.
Alex has been with the company for
over five years and studied for his
apprenticeship at Stephenson College,
Simon hyde was recently on hand
to celebrate his achievements at a
celebratory dinner in Kent along with
Kerrie morris, Steve hart and Jordan
mcKenzie.
Alex said “i stumbled in to my
apprenticeship by accident, but i’m glad i
did as it’s the best thing i ever did, having
achieved all my qualifications it means i
should never be out of work and can take
my qualifications anywhere in the world”.
“the apprenticeship scheme” said
Simon, “is definitely working for us as a
company, we need more young people to
learn the skills that will literally drive the
country forward. we have another three
apprentices due to qualify in 2018, one in
2019 and i am pleased to report another
two are just about to start their course at
mid Kent College”.

APSE Scotland once again arranged
the highly successful Fleet, Waste and
Grounds Conference in Aviemore.
This event sees the largest Scottish
trade exhibition of its kind, with
over 100 exhibition stands alongside
a programme of expert speakers,
discussion forums and networking
opportunities. It aims to provide
delegates with the latest up to date
service ideas and improvements in the
areas of waste and recycling, refuse
collection, transport management,
street scene, street cleansing, parks
and grounds maintenance.
FAUN Zoeller have attended the APSe
seminar in Aviemore since the 1990’s and
over the years the snow on the mountain
has slowly disappeared but the sun always
seems to shine! the backdrop to the event
was as usual fabulous and the attendance
of delegates and exhibitors was, once
again, high.
the content of the seminars and speeches
was excellent with some very thought
provoking topics presenting all kinds of
challenges for the local authorities in
Scotland.
Scotland is, for the company, a very
important market and this year the board
of directors accompanied duncan Angus,
regional Account manager for Scotland
and the North east, not that he needed us!
the rotoPreSS aroused considerable
interest this year, something to do with the
artwork on the drum certainly or should i
say ‘probably’ helped! with the challenges
for the operators and Fleet managers
the drum concept has definitely given
them pause for thought and has already
delivered operational benefits to many
local authorities.
the new aluminium body from PB
environnement also made another
appearance after its long trek from the
Sme show in Kent and it again gave rise to
some considerable discussions, particularly
on the utilisation for food collection.
All in all the event was a huge success not
only for us but also the APSe organisation.
Paul o’Brien was on hand to present the
awards to the following winners;
• waste Category - winners were east
lothian Council, east renfrewshire
Council and Stirling Council
• Fleet Category - winners were dumfries
& Galloway Council, Falkirk Council and
North Ayrshire Council
• Parks, Grounds and Streets Category -
winners were City of edinburgh Council,
South lanarkshire Council and west
lothian Council
Congratulations to everyone that took
part and as always FAUN Zoeller are very
pleased to be associated with some of the
winners and indeed the APSe organisation.
it was a decision made very quickly to
confirm that we will be back to Aviemore
in 2018!

At the end of July the FAUN Group
which is active in markets all over the
world acquired French manufacturer
PB Environnement from Lambesc in
Southern France. The acquisition will
add a range of small and lightweight
aluminum-bodied waste disposal
vehicle to the FAUN product portfolio.
The move will strengthen the body
manufacturer’s market position
and expand its international service
network.
the acquisition was made via FAUN
environnement, a wholly owned FAUN
subsidiary based in Guilhérand-Granges,
France. with a team of 300 employees
and a turnover of 55 million euros in
2015, the company is the second-largest
production plant in the FAUN Group.
originally founded in 1922 under the
name Granges SA, the company now
employs 350 people and has set its sights
on achieving a turnover of 65 million
euros. etienne Blaise, managing director
at FAUN environnement, comments
on the acquisition: “i’m pleased that
the shareholders of PB environnement
have decided to entrust the future of
their company to FAUN. the acquisition
allows FAUN to add high-quality vehicles
to its portfolio and to benefit from
synergy effects. Both companies have an
established foothold in their local markets
and enjoy an excellent reputation in their
home countries. For this reason we plan
to retain the PB environnement name”.
Founded in 1989, Provence Bennes has
become the leading French manufacturer
of Aluminium bodied refuse collection
vehicles. in 2000 the company integrated
with techmann and moved to a new
18000 m² site. in April 2005 the company
was renamed PB environnement and in
2008 they established a subsidiary, PB
espana in madrid.
with over 2000 vehicles sold in France,
the company is recognised for its capacity
to design and build a strong, reliable
product which aligns perfectly with the
FAUN Zoeller ethos.
the concept of small, compact and
resistance to corrosion gives this product
many advantages on its use and
application. the bodies range in size from
3.5t to 7.5t chassis types allowing up to a
3 t payload.
“we are delighted” said Simon hyde, “to
have this product range in our portfolio,
as it complements what we provide to
the market already. the commercial team
will be visiting the plant for training and
familiarisation but the product has already
made appearances at the Sme show in
Kent and at Aviemore in Scotland with
tremendous interest shown. we will of
course be investing in a demonstration
vehicle to present to the UK market”.
FAUN Zoeller Doncaster welcomed
Ben Abbott, a third year apprentice
from Luton Borough Council on a one
week placement commencing Monday
3rd of March 2017. Ben was met by
Tony Hall (Doncaster Depot Manager)
who guided Ben through the initial
depot induction process followed by
the obligatory health and safety and
site awareness requirements.
tony then introduced Ben to dean
Corfield, doncaster workshop Supervisor,
as dean would be Ben’s mentor for the
week. dean has a wealth of industry
knowledge which is complemented by
his additional accreditation of training
assessor. this helped Ben to better
understand how FAUN Zoeller operates
within a very busy commercial and retail
environment.
tony hall had provided Ben with a busy agenda for the week encompassing scheduled maintenance, mot preparation which Ben was involved in. the mot preparation was followed by a trip to the local mot test centre, thankfully the vehicle in question passed first time! By the end of the week tony and dean had arranged to present a few FAUN Zoeller goodies to Ben as a memento of his brief time spent in doncaster.
Ben was well received and cemented a good friendship with all the staff in doncaster during his visit. we speak for everybody at FAUN Zoeller doncaster when we say Ben is a credit to himself and equally to his employer luton Borough Council. he is extremely courteous and knowledgeable and he should be proud of his achievements. it was a pleasure hosting Ben. Just prior to his departure we took a group photograph of all the staff Ben was involved with.
this placement came about after an initial conversation with Simon hyde at the rwm show in 2016 and then a visit to luton Borough Council to meet Ben and our other apprentices. Simon expressed a keen interest in Fleet transport’s Apprentice Programme and was fully behind our desire to broaden Ben’s experience and knowledge by working in partnership with us.

New Aluminium Body for Food waste Collection
“with some excellent help and
support from all involved at FAUN
Zoeller, a plan was soon approved
and in place and Ben was on his
way to doncaster (albeit with a little
trepidation it’s fair to say!) Ben was
put at ease straight away on his
arrival and thoroughly enjoyed his
week on site. he came back with a
good and rounded understanding
of the doncaster operation and was
full of praise for tony, dean and the
rest of the staff there.
working together on this placement
has proved to be a pleasurable
experience and benefit for all
involved at luton Borough Council
and FAUN Zoeller and something
both of us are looking forward to
doing again in the future.
in the last couple of months since
Ben’s return to luton Borough
Council, he has achieved his
Apprenticeship qualifications and is
now a fully qualified heavy Goods
Vehicle technician and a valued
asset to Fleet transport’s team!”

Bradford /’brædford is in the
Metropolitan Borough of the City of
Bradford in West Yorkshire. It forms
part of the West Yorkshire urban area
and is the fourth largest urban area in
the United Kingdom.
historically a part of the west riding of
Yorkshire, Bradford rose to prominence
during the 19th century as an
international centre of textile manufacture,
particularly wool. it was a boomtown of
the industrial revolution and amongst
the earliest industrialised settlements,
rapidly becoming the ‘wool capital of the
world’. the area’s access to a supply of
coal, iron ore and soft water facilitated the
growth of Bradford’s manufacturing base,
which, as textile manufacture grew, led
to an explosion in population and was a
stimulus to civic investment.
Famous people from Bradford include
the Bronte sisters, Kiki dee, Adrian
edmondson and Zayn malik (1d
apparently!) to name but a few.
Bradford metropolitan district Council
not only has a large population of the
city itself to look after, home to just
under 531,500 people but they are also
responsible for an area of just under
143 square miles including the towns of
Allerton, tong & Bolton.
Bradford has a large fleet of vehicles used
for both urban and rural routes. Following
a competitive tender exercise, FAUN
Zoeller were awarded the vehicles after
demonstrating the best overall value.
the order was for two x VArioPreSSeS
with Zoeller rotary three lifters mounted
on mercedes econic 6 x 2 rear steer
chassis.
the vehicles were delivered in mid-march
2017 and went into operation soon after.
A full training programme was carried
out with their staff, to ensure a smooth
transition into their fleet.
Ben lord, regional Account manager,
on hand to guide the fleet team through
the process and also to ensure that the
vehicles met their specification and said
“they are very happy with the set-up of
the vehicles as they wanted the flexibility
of a low level lifter and they also opted
for long life hoppers which will extend the
life of the body. i look forward to working
with the fleet team again”.
Success in Bradford
Carlisle is the county city of Cumbria,
just 10 miles south of the Scottish
border and is the administrative base
for both the city council and the
county council. Originally established
by the Romans to serve the forts on
Hadrian’s Wall as time passed Carlisle,
due to its close proximity to Scotland,
became an important military
stronghold and much of the castle still
stands today.
Carlisle City Council not only have a large
population of the city itself to look after,
home to just under 109,000 people but
they are also responsible for an area of
just under 402 square miles including
the towns of Brampton and longtown.
Carlisle City Council is actually the largest
council in england by area although much
of the area is rural. in 2012 it was also
voted ‘Britain’s happiest City’
Stephen rickerby, Fleet manager at the
Council said “when we were looking
to replace the fleet we were particularly
impressed with both the maneuverability
and payload of the rotoPreSS. this
was particularly important to us as we
are building many new properties in the
area and access is vital without increasing
either the vehicle or fleet size”.
during the tender process FAUN Zoeller
arranged multiple demonstrations of the
vehicles so that Carlisle City Council were
comfortable with the products and could
specify exactly what they needed for their
detailed requirements.
the initial order was for two x 20 m³
rotoPreSS, two x 18 m³ rotoPreSS
all fitted with Zoeller delta lifters on
mercedes econic 6 x 2 rear steer chassis.
Carlisle City Council is currently focused
on waste and recycling with an extended
kerbside recycling service and they have
also arranged a number of roadshows to
demonstrate how the new system will
work.
Ben lord, regional Account manager,
was as always on hand to guide Stephen
through the process and also to ensure
that the vehicles met their specification.
“i have worked with the Council and
Stephen for many months. i am very
pleased to announce that they have just
ordered a further three rotoPreSS for
their green waste collection and i think
that faith in our product speaks for itself”.
Carlisle City Council impressed with rotoPreSS
Congratulations to Zak Parkins &
Amie Daniels who welcomed a new
addition to the family in December.
Jacob Parkins was born at 03:12 on
12/12/16 and weighed a healthy 6lbs 9oz.

In February this year Patrick
Hermanspann was announced as a
Member of the Management Board
of FAUN Zoeller UK Limited. Thomas
Schmitz, who has been our Chairman
for many years, is now concentrating
on other ECOTEC projects.
Patrick began work as a student at FAUN
Umwelttechnik and since then has had
a meteoric rise through the company
and he was appointed Ceo of the FAUN
Group in 2013.
Both Patrick and matthias Kohlmann
(Group Chief Financial officer) visited the
redditch hQ for a recent board meeting
and high on the agenda was the order
intake for the factories along with the
manufacturing and delivery schedules for
the UK customers.
“we have enjoyed many years working
with thomas”, Simon said “and we wish
him well in the new projects he is taking
on and further afield”.
Patrick and Simon have worked very
closely during the acquisition, merger and
restructuring processes over the last seven
years, so a strong working relationship
already exists.
Simon added, “the executive team at
both FAUN & Zoeller is very strong and
high performing. it’s a pleasure to be
part of such a team with huge support
from Group. Patrick, myself, Stewart and
richard will continue with the UK business
plan, which is now well in advance of our
expectations, in terms of market position
and trading”.
Patrick hermanspann, a new member of the board
On a very hot June day, the sales
and engineering team travelled to
Valence in France for training on
the new acquisition’s product range.
Monsieur Blaise, the CEO of FAUN
Environnement welcomed the FZ UK
team and introduced us to Monsieur
Reverdy, the company President &
Monsieur Dubois, the Export Manager
from PB Environnement.
A very detailed presentation was
made outlining unique features of the
products. the team spent a considerable
time actually driving and operating the
vehicle in order to fully understand and
appreciate the operational features and
benefits. in order for the product to suit
the UK market a detailed specification
had to be discussed and agreed. Stewart
and Simon were very keen to finalise the
detail as they wanted to place the order
for the unit. i am pleased to report that
the order was placed and we all look
forward to the newest addition to our
demonstration fleet arriving in the UK
soon.
“we were all very impressed with the
product range,” said Simon, “both
with the options available and the
opportunities that may be presented. we
are extremely positive towards the new
vehicles and know there will be a market
for them in the UK. we are obviously
keen to get the demonstration unit here
in the UK so our customers can see how
good they are”.
raphael de Gasquet, the main commercial
contact at FeNV was also on hand to
provide the actual product presentation
and training at the facility.
“raphael is a great support for all of
us at FZ UK and the factory are keen to
continue with the new venture”, Stewart
Gregory explained.
training in Valence, France
In a relatively small field in Kent, the
SME (Southern Municipal Exhibition)
took place for the fourth time, with
delegates and exhibitors from the
region to debate and discuss the hot
topics of the industry.
the formal dinner, the evening before the
exhibition, set the scene for a relaxed but
informative programme, although the
magician did raise some concerns on the
missing £50 notes!
Attendance at the show itself was high
and yet again, much interest was aroused
with the products on display. the new
aluminium body from PB environnement
made its first appearance in the country
under the stewardship of FZ UK and we
are sure that Pat Brown, regional Account
manager, will be kept very busy following
up on all the interest shown in it.
Such was the interest that in fact Stewart
Gregory, Commercial director, is now in
discussion with Group to order another
demonstration unit so we can present the
operational opportunities that this vehicle
provides to our clients in the UK. looking
forward to next year’s event which i am
sure will be even busier!

Achieving goalsin liverpool
Liverpool has been described as
having ‘the most splendid setting
of any English city’. With an
estimated population of just under
479,000 in the city itself and with its
surrounding areas it is the fifth largest
metropolitan area in the UK with over
2.24 million people.
liverpool sits on the eastern side of the
mersey estuary and historically lay within
the ancient hundred of west derby in the
south west of the county of lancashire. its
growth as a major port was paralleled by
the expansion of the city throughout the
industrial revolution. liverpool was home
to both the Cunard and white Star line
and was the port of registry of the ocean
liners rmS titanic, the rmS lusitania,
Queen mary and olympic.
the popularity of the Beatles and
other groups from the merseybeat era
contributes to liverpool’s status as a
tourist destination. home of two Premier
league football clubs, liverpool and
everton and also the world-famous Grand
National horse race which takes place
annually at Aintree racecourse on the
outskirts of the city.
the city celebrated its 800th anniversary
in 2007 and was awarded the european
Capital of Culture in 2008. Several areas
of the city centre have also been granted
world heritage Site status by UNeSCo
Natives of the city of liverpool are referred
to as liverpudlians and colloquially as
‘Scousers’, a reference to ‘scouse’, a
form of stew. the word ‘scouse’ has also
become synonymous with the liverpool
accent and dialect.
liverpool City Council are responsible for
ensuring the cleanliness of the streets
within the city limits and the fleet team
there do a great job with a large fleet of
vehicles used for mainly urban routes.
in order to get the best from their fleet
they specifically needed a vehicle that
could easily collect wheeled bins and
bulky / stroke side waste. our rotary Xl
lifter offers a full width hopper aperture
which gives the operator maximum
flexibility.
Following a competitive tender exercise,
FAUN Zoeller were awarded the vehicles
after demonstrating the best overall value.
the order was for twenty VArioPreSSeS
with Zoeller rotary three Xl lifters
mounted on mercedes econic 6 x 2 rear
steer chassis.
there will be a scheduled roll out of the
vehicles commencing in July 2017.
Ben lord, regional Account manager, was
on hand to guide the fleet team through
the process and also to ensure that the
vehicles met their specification. “i have
had a long relationship with the council
over a number of years and we have
worked closely together in order to create
the best specification for their operational
requirements”.
Joseph Gibiliru Contract manager at
liverpool Street Scene said “From the
tender process to the delivery of the
vehicles, Ben lord at FZ UK has been
outstanding both with his product
knowledge and information which he
has shared with liverpool Street Scene.
this information gave us the confidence
to make the right choice of vehicle we
required”.
Austin’s trip to FAUN Viatec with malcolm Bates. On a grey Thursday morning at the
beginning of May, just before 6am, I
met up with Malcolm Bates, Project
Consultant of MVO Magazine at
Birmingham Airport for a trip to the
FAUN Viatec factory in Grimma. Once
Malcolm had enjoyed his full English
breakfast and armed with his trusty
camera we boarded our flight to
Berlin’s Tegel Airport. Over the couple
of hours that the flight took, we
discussed that Berlin is a fascinating
city that we’d both like to spend more
time in and how good it would be to
see it from the air. Sadly the weather
had other ideas and all that we got to
see was a whole lot of grey and damp
instead!
After finding our hire car we set off in
the direction of Grimma and talked about
how the freedom of the unrestricted
Autobahn ahead offered such a refreshing
change from the norm of a jammed UK
motorway, meaning that we should cover
the 220kms or so ahead of us in much
less than 2 hours. As we approached
the Viatec factory, some 90 minutes
later, malcolm commented that he was
interested as to what changes he would
see since his last visit 5 years ago. the
first thing that caught the eye as we
arrived was the number of chassis’ in
stock awaiting build – as every sweeper
is built to order, this immediately reflects
a healthy production programme.
Although he couldn’t wait to draw his
camera from its holster and get straight
at it, i did manage to persuade malcolm
to step inside to meet with mario ringl
(international Business development) and
helmut Schmeh (managing director of
FAUN Viatec) for a chat.
the discussion over lunch centred around
the busy production programme, new
innovation that has been introduced for
the Viajet product range, new projects
and updates that are being worked
on. the coming launch of the new and
updated version of the terrajet Airport
Sweeper that is making its debut at the
interAirport Show in munich during
october 2017 and also the opportunity
to have a chat with our new distributor
in New Zealand, which will feature in the
next edition of waste management world
magazine. Next on the fast schedule was
mario giving malcolm a whistle-stop tour
of the factory which incorporated an up
close and personal look at the new control
panel that has recently been introduced
to the Viajet range. Following on from
some photo opportunities and goodbyes,
we headed back to the car for our return
journey to Berlin.
on our journey back to the airport,
we were treated to a few moments of
interest for the inner sightseer – a sign for
dessau Bauhaus, the famous early 20th
Century school of art, Checkpoint Bravo
as we approached the City of Berlin, a
sign for the olympic Stadium that was
used in the 1936 olympic Games and
finally, quite by accident, the famous
Avus ring Grandstand which sits right
next to the Bundesautobahn 115. if only
we had more time to hop out and take a
look around, but our flight was waiting.
malcolm and i went our separate ways
at Birmingham Airport but you’ll be
able to hear his side of the trip in mVo
magazine’s next edition in August 2017.

meeting rachel maclean, mP for redditchOver the last few years, Simon has
been heavily involved with the local
business leaders group in Redditch
and has worked closely with Karen
Lumley, the local MP for Redditch.
Sadly through ill health Karen
resigned from her post prior to the

well for the future.
So yet again the British public were asked
to cast their votes and in redditch the
newly appointed mP, rachel maclean met
up with Simon to continue the discussion
on business opportunities including the
apprenticeship schemes and other local
initiatives.
Simon has also recently been appointed
to the Board for Skills & development
with the Greater Birmingham and Solihull
local enterprise Partnership. Pictured
with Simon is Andrew Bywater who is the
employment and Skills officer at North
worcestershire economic development
and regeneration. the new mayor of
Birmingham, Andy Street, has created a
schools mentoring programme and from
that Andrew has invited Simon to join the
Careers enterprise Company to provide
mentors across the region delivering the
message to local schools.
“the region has tremendous
opportunities” said Simon, “despite
what people believe regarding Brexit.
the development of hS2 and the growth
within the construction and automotive
sectors is significant. it is therefore vital
that we develop the growth of the
younger generation as early as we can to
combat the skills shortage.”
he continued, “i am looking forward to
carrying on the good work with rachel
and the team and i here at FAUN Zoeller
UK wish her continued success as our
local mP”.
Swindon is a large town in Wiltshire
first referred to in the Domesday Book
as Suindune which is believed to be
derived from the Old English words
‘swine’ and ‘dun’ meaning ‘pig hill’.
Swindon became an expanded town
under the town development Act 1952
and this led to a major increase in its
population which now stands at just
over 180,000, a little known fact is that
residents of Swindon are known as
Swindonians!
Swindon is home to the Bodleian library’s
book depository containing an amazing
153 miles of bookshelves, the english
heritage National monument record
Centre and the headquarters of the
National trust which stands on the site of
the former Great western railway works.
Swindon Borough Council covers not just
Swindon but an additional 18 parishes in
wiltshire totalling an area of just under 89
square miles with a total population of just
under 217,500.
Pat Brown, regional Account manager
said, “we consulted with Swindon
Borough Council over many months
during the procurement process as we
wanted to be sure that they obtained a
tailored solution specifically for their new
refuse collection vehicles. with regards to
the refuse collection vehicles there were
several unique advantages; firstly the FCS
(FAUN Control System).”
the VArioPreSS 2 body is controlled by
the FAUN Control System (or FCS as it’s
known) which is designed to meet the
needs of contemporary refuse collection
vehicles. the FCS offers all the benefits
you would expect from a state-of-the-
art CAN-bus system and is unique to
FAUN Zoeller rCV bodies. All of the
vehicle’s functions and movements are
displayed on the screen and even the
vehicles lighting can be simply and safely
controlled. the FCS localises any errors
detected in the control system and is
capable of displaying the last 500 faults.
this effectively does away with complex
error analyses and also decreases the time
needed for maintenance and repair.
Secondly we were able to offer an
eco Pump. in a nutshell the eco Pump
enables a non-electric lift to display all the
beneficial characteristics of an electric lift
and it results in lower fuel consumption.
the eco Power lifter consumes 2,985
litres less fuel per year. this is a reduction
of up to 14% in consumption during
collection operations (real values may vary
depending on the operating conditions).
the eco Power lifter also results in up to a
14% reduction in Co² emissions - the eco
Power lifter generates 7,912 tonnes fewer
Co² emissions per year per vehicle.
After successful completion of various
demo’s highlighting the unique FAUN
Zoeller products we were pleased
to receive the order for seventeen
VArioPreSS bodies mounted on 26t
mercedes econic chassis fitted with sixteen
rotary Xl lifters and one omega lifter.
All vehicles delivered during december
2016 have now been in operation for a
few months and they’ve proved to be
reliable and very efficient with any task
that they are asked to complete.
Paul warren, waste and recycling
Supervisor at Swindon B.C. said, “the
new fleet replaced our old FAUN Zoeller
vehicles which had been reliable but had
reached the end of their operational
life and we now have a new fleet that
can provide greater fuel efficiency and
flexibility within our operation.”
Two years ago the spare parts
department went through some
dramatic changes in order to improve
its service delivery to its internal and
external customers. Alister McDonald
joined us in July 2015 and set about
creating his new team, system and
processes in order to achieve the goal.
rob hare and eliot tandy were appointed
as the first line customer service team and
worked not only with our clients but also
the field support engineers as well as the
contracts team. Allan Senior and Nathan
woodward were in the warehouse
ensuring that stock was plentiful and
dispatches on time.
Simon commented, “As a business we
have to be realistic and honest in order to
understand where we are. At the time the
spare parts section of our business wasn’t
the best. it lacked at every level and as a
team we knew we had an opportunity for
improvement. the team was and still are
extremely focused as well as dedicated to
the task and it is because of them we are
where we are today”.
this has been a tremendous turnaround
programme and as a result our key
performance measures have exceeded
our expectations and at the same time
we have to admit, most importantly, our
customers are happy again. As a result we
have seen significant growth in this sector
and we are now in the planning stages
of extending the store and warehouse
capacity in order to cope with the growth.
“it is extremely satisfying to see the results
of a team working together to achieve
the positive change”, Simon added, “the
parts supply is a vital segment of our
business and i am very proud of what the
team have done”.
to thank them and to celebrate their
achievements the board of directors took
the team away from the hustle and bustle
of the office, phones, shelves and boxes
to the march hare outdoor pursuit centre
near worcester.
A day in the sun for the Spare Parts team
stop press // SUmmer 2017 // p16 p17 // SUmmer 2017 // stop press
on a bright sunny afternoon, Alister the
guide took the team into a shady clearing
in the woods and showed us just how
to shoot. Second on the agenda was the
clay pigeon shoot, which was like a scene
from a sitcom. Pistol shooting proved to
us all that we should just stick to what we
are good at. None of the team will make
the grade as mi5 agents!
it was however the karting that proved
the most interesting. we discovered
before the event that Nathan couldn’t
drive so that was going to be a challenge
and to be fair he took the banter in good
humour in fact he probably had the last
laugh. Unbelievably he made it through
to the final, due in part to ‘ramming’ the
rest of the team off the track and not
totally adhering to the course rules. it will
be different on the roads when Nathan
eventually learns to drive. it was like
watching Niki lauda and James hunt with
Alister and richard horton in the final
where richard just pipped Alister over the
line – well done sir!
A great day was had by all and perfectly
finished off with a BBQ and a few drinks
in the pub.
it’s important that we celebrate
and acknowledge hard work and
achievement, which is really what the day
was all about and now the team really are
ready to take the spare parts department
to the next level.
A year later, with AmP 6 failing to kick
off in the way that was expected for the
order book he still wasn’t fulfilling the
buzz that he had been missing, Austin
had the opportunity to join Aebi Schmidt
UK as Business development manager
for their winter maintenance products,
into local authorities across england
and wales. when his role changed to
focus more on key accounts, he became
very involved in the development of the
Schmidt Street King 660 truck mounted
sweeper with his previous experience and
it reignited his passion or nerdiness for
sweepers!
in February 2017, Austin joined FAUN
Zoeller UK to develop business within
the highway construction, construction,
airport and private contractor sector of
the market, focusing solely on the Viajet
and terrajet sweeper ranges. with the
contacts and experience that he had
collected over the years, this role is the
perfect fit for him and the product range
that FAUN ViAteC has is just phenomenal,
as a ‘sweeper nerd’, he really couldn’t ask
more.
Austin was on hand at the Southern
municipal exhibition in Kent to help
promote the ViAJet 6 truck mounted
sweeper.
As you can see from the introduction
Austin has a wealth of experience in
the sector and has just returned from a
factory tour with malcolm Bates from
the Ciwm. helmut Schmeh and mario
ringl from FAUN ViAteC were on hand
to demonstrate and explain to malcolm
the new developments at the factory in
leipzig.
Simon said, “we are delighted to have
Austin on board as it gives us additional
experience and he will undoubtedly help
us develop and further the progress we
have already made in this sector”.
Austin Anderson joined Gulliver’s
Truck Hire in November 2001 to
develop their business in the specialist
municipal vehicle hire sector. Having
previously worked for Link Tip Ltd
as their Southern Sales Engineer, his
experience in working with the public
sector was invaluable to developing
the waste sector of the business
from just tippers, skip Loaders and
hooklifts, which was all that Gulliver’s
had previously offered, alongside
their refrigerated, box and tractor
unit fleet. Covering all of the UK he
focused mostly on the areas that could
be served by the existing Gulliver’s
depots across South Wales and the
South West of England. During
2002, they added 5 Sweepers to the
fleet and 5 FAUN Variopress RCVs,
alongside a Rotopress! Austin left
Gulliver’s in May 2003, having secured
their first local authority specialist
contract hire deal with Cambourne
DC in Cornwall and a specialist
municipal hire fleet that consisted
of 21 Sweepers, 15 RCVs and 2 Gully
Tankers.
in July 2003, he joined Scarab Sweepers
as regional Sales manager, covering the
midlands and east of england territory.
Austin had the task of taking over this
territory from one of the industry’s most
recognisable characters and one of the
original three founders of Scarab, the
late Peter wilson, which were some
fairly large boots to fill! when the long
serving regional Sales manager for the
North west territory retired in June 2005,
he moved to cover that territory for the
next seven years. he worked with local
authorities, national hire companies and
private contractors that operated in both
the highways and construction sectors,
as well as the private contractors that
operate in the municipal waste sector.
Austin sold all products in the Scarab
range, from the minor 3.5t gvw Urban
Sweeper, through to the magnum Plus
specialist high pressure washing Sweeper,
establishing some great relationships
along the way.
in october 2012, he had an epiphany
moment and joined his family business
in the plastic injection moulding industry
as a director, with the responsibility of
looking after all aspects of production.
As a completely fresh set of eyes, the
challenge of moving the company into
new markets, to become a tier one
supplier to one of the country’s most
famous automotive brands and succeed
his father was very appealing. during that
time, they managed to increase monthly
turnover each month by 10-20%. they
broke the company’s record monthly
turnover three times, increased efficiency
and achieved 100% plant utilisation for
only the 2nd time in 25 years. with the
overall responsibility of their 24 hours, six
days a week production operation, Austin
was involved in bringing apprentices into
the business, wider recruitment to the
production department, managed the
departmental budget and increased their
use of 5S, as well as working towards
a Kaizan process for elements of their
wider production process and trying
reduce operational costs. Austin found
that he really missed the buzz of a sales
environment and the elation of winning
business, trying to find that buzz in mass
production of small plastic mouldings was
impossible.
in late may 2014, Austin joined J hvidtved
larsen UK ltd as Sales manager, UK
North to sell their range of sewer cleaning
vehicles, which coincided with the start of
the AmP 6 national water contract for all
water authorities across the UK. with the
territory being very undeveloped, it was
a development job in a new sector of the
waste management industry and another
interesting challenge. he developed some
good relationships across the territory and
sold without doubt the most expensive
trucks anyone had ever experienced at
that time.
Still sweeping up after all this time!

“My name is Austin Anderson and I am part of the sales team specialising in sweepers. Having been quarried in the early 1970s, I’m a Brummie in exile having lived in Shropshire for more than 40 years. I live in the village of Lilleshall, home to the National Sports Centre, where Team GB’s Archers and Gymnasts have their HQ.
i’m really excited to have joined the FAUN Zoeller UK team and when not being a bit of geek of all things sweeper related, i spend my time chasing around after my daughters - Sophia is 7 and hollie is 4. my interests are music (very much savouring and not playing!) and i try to get out to see gigs and festivals. So far on the list for 2017 is the download Festival again, where i’ll chalk off a bucket list entry of seeing Aerosmith. i’m a petrol head, i’m a retired motorcyclist, love all forms of motor racing and hoping to hit a Formula
1 race in europe in the next few years, i enjoy heading out in my dear old rag top car (if we get a decent day!) and i enjoy history too. travelling is something that i like to experience and my number 1 bucket list entry is to ride a harley davidson down route 66!
it seems that i fit in at FZ UK as an Aston Villa supporter, i enjoy rugby (watching only these days!) and i enjoy keeping somewhere near fit by walking and hitting the gym a couple of times a week”.

Building a strong relationship with wyre Forest district Council

The Wyre Forest covers an area of
10.17 square miles and is noted for
its variety of wildlife. Although now
large parts of the Wyre Forest have
been deforested it is one of the
largest remaining ancient woodlands
in Britain.
wyre Forest is also the name of the local
government district in worcestershire
covering the towns of Kidderminster,
Stourport-on-Severn, Bewdley and
numerous rural villages totalling an area
of 74 square miles. with a population
of just under 100,000 it is popular with
tourists from far and wide looking for
a fun family day out with the kids, high
wire forest adventure or relaxing and
absorbing history and culture. there are
so many great things to do and places to
visit in the wyre Forest district, including
16 miles of heritage steam railway on
the Severn Valley railway; west midland
Safari and leisure Park; Go Ape; historic
manor houses and several museums.
mark Court, regional Account manager
consulted with wyre Forest district
Council over many months during the
procurement process as he wanted to
be sure that they got a tailored solution
specifically for their needs. this initially
meant meeting with derek Simmonds,
Fleet officer at wFdC to get a full picture
of what he wanted to achieve, with
particular emphasis on the operational
capabilities, with a lot of feedback given
directly from the operators.
A detailed specification was put together,
discussed with the drivers and then wyre
Forest requested a demonstration of our
new sweeper as their existing equipment
lacked the water capacity that ours was
able to offer in addition to the fuel saving
benefit of the Vw donkey engine.
After successful completion of the demo
we were very pleased to receive the order
for a new ViAJet 6 mounted on a dAF
lF 220 FA 4 x 2 rigid 16 tonne chassis.
the specification includes a complete
stainless steel hopper, an uprated fan, Vw
donkey engine, pneumatic wander hose,
high pressure system incorporating the
extended package, with water jet bars to
the channel and roller brushes.
it has now been in operation for a few
months and it has proved to be extremely
reliable and very efficient with any task
that it is asked to complete.
mark Court, regional Account manager
for FAUN Zoeller says “we hope that
this will be the start of another strong
relationship in the midlands area and are
looking to use this as another building
block to grow our sweeper presence in
the area”.
“i am particularly delighted with this
result”, said Simon hyde, “as Bewdley
is my home town and it gives me great
pleasure to see our equipment sweeping
the roads outside my local!”
