Structured Matrices with Applications

The International Conference on Structured Matrices was held from May 29 to June 1, 2002at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong. The conferencehad two major objectives: (1) to improve the dialogue and collaboration between matrixtheoreticians and computational scientists, and (2) to reduce the gap between researchersworking on the fundamentals and researchers working on real-life applications, with the goalsthat emerging applications will stimulate new theoretical research and that better theoreticaltools will in turn be exported back to the various �elds of application.These proceedings contain 25 papers from invited speakers of the conference. The contribu-tions in structured matrices with applications which cover di�erent aspects in this researcharea. Three main research topics are involved in the proceeding:

• the theoretical analysis of structured matrices including algebraic, analytic and spectralproperties;

• the design of e�cient algorithms relying on the properties of structured matrices and thee�ective preconditioning techniques for structured systems;

• and the applications to image and signal processing and ordinary and partial di�erentialequations.
