UniversitiesinFrance,called“fac”(shortfor“faculty”),aregovernedbyasystemthatmeetstheEuropeanstandardsforhighereducation.Itfollowsnationalguidelinesandoffers standardized degree courses,with a systemof credits (ECTS-EuropeanCreditTransferSystem)thatneedtobeobtainedforeachdegree.
Organisationoftheuniversitysystem:
CREDITSSYSTEMItisbasedonthenumberofcreditsassignedtoeachcoursewithinanacademicyear. A full academic year workload requires 60 ECTS, a semester workloadrequires30ECTS,a“Licence”degreerequires180ECTS.ECTSareextremelyusefulforEuropeanforeignstudents:forexample,astudentwhohasvalidatedtwosemesterswillreceive60ECTS.Thismeansthestudentcanenter the secondyearof aBachelor’sdegree inFrance since theseECTSprovethatthestudenthasvalidatedthefirstyearinhis/hercountry.
HOW COURSES ARE ORGANIZED
Therearevariationsaccordingtocourses,departmentsandsubjects,butyou’llfindafewpermanentfeatures.
Youwillusuallyhavetwo-hourlectures(“coursmagistraux”orCM),butsomelecturesmaylastuptofourhours.Inadditiontothese,youwillhavetutorials(“travauxdirigés”orTD).Lecturestakeplaceinamphitheatersastheyareintendedforagreatnumberofstudents,whereastutorialsareheldinclassroomsfornomorethanfortystudents.During CMs, the professor lectures to students, while students may ask questions,participateindebates,workondrills,makeoralpresentationsandbequestioned.Mostofthetime,studentsarerequiredtogivepresentationsinordertoassesstheirworkintermsofpersonalresearch,groupinteractionandoralpresentation.Insomecourses,youwillalsohavepracticalwork(“travauxpratiques”orTP)that iscarriedoutinlaboratories(researchlabs,languagelabs,computerlabs)insmallgroups.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT
TheuniversityyearstartsinSeptemberandendsinMayorJune.Itisdividedintwosemestersofapproximately12weeks(seethecalendarpage4and5).
EachsemestercountsequallytoobtainECTScreditsandpassinthefollowingyear.Assessmentiscarriedoutinthefollowingway:-continuousassessment(“contrôlecontinu”orCC)throughoutthewholesemester:creditsmaybeawardedforbeingpresentinclass,participation,writtentestsand,most of the time, for oral presentations to your TD group and/or presentationshandedintotheprofessor.- final assessment (“contrôle terminal” or CT), called partial (“ partiel”). As youcantellfromitsname,thistesttakesplaceattheendofthesemester(eitherinDecemberandJanuary,orinMayandJune).Inordertopass,astudenthastosucceedbothsemesters.However,shouldheorshefail,thereisa“secondsession”ofexams.Thissecondsession,called“retakes”(“sessionderattrapage”)enablesstudentstore-sitfortheirfailedexamsatthebeginningofJanuaryandattheendofMayorbeginningofJune.Itconsistseitherinwrittentestsororaltests,dependingonsubjects.
